Bendigo Gold v Casey Scorpions

KC from Casey

Watched the recording after getting back from Etihad.

Some observations:

- Great win! Impressive never-say-die attitude that paid off......again.

- Morton begins to look like a 'grown up' footballer. Looks like he's put on a few kilos and made a decent contribution.

- Evans was impressive in patches and will be an AFL footballer.

- Davis did some great things down back before and after injuring his shoulder. Some of his kicking was shocking. Should not be promoted until it improves, sadly.

- Moloney was disappointing.

- Panozza is a good player.

- Jetta did pretty well.

- Spencer was great and Fitzpatrick is looking more & more impressive. He's a lot more adaptable than the big(ger) fella.

Nice to see that there are a few options given our injury situation.

Davis in the best again. Cops a big job in the Magoos each week. I hope he gets a chance soon with the seniors continually losing. Last year at Casey he and Tommy Mac combined well together up back, but this year has carried greater responsibility.

Surely Gysberts can get a go somewhere. At least he racks up the pill each week for casey. A better option than Bate. Wouldn't mind seeing Jetta back. We need to find some ball winners.

Great win by the Scorps, hoping they can go all the way. With the MFC injury list spiralling out of control, it is going to be a tough road.

Some good signs yesteday, along with players that haven't seen much, if any game time, Evans and Jetta.

I loved Pencils run and dash, he must be hanging around with Blease a lot these days.

Anyone .. (KC might be best informed to answer this) where is Kyle Matthews at? When fully fit, he would be a welcome in for the team.

Great news about Evans, he seems to me a good outside player, havnt seen enough (and cant remember what I have seen) of his disposal but I do remember his first couple of games and just managed to find the ball alot

Watched the game on telly.

I like the look of Williams who is a good mover and can kick a ball.

He has a future with us, I think.

Finds it inside @ the bounce as well, thru traffic & nice run&carry.

Flower Power. I just added the goal kickers and best players to the post above from the end of the game.

Gysberts was probably in Casey's best to half time but was quiet in the third quartermand did a couple of good things in the last. Same goes for Morton although he was the better of the two. Spencer played a great game in the ruck and given the Russian's injury today, he should be back at Melbourne next week. Jack Fitzpatrick played well in patches - he could have kicked four today. One of his misses was a brain fade when he marked 15 metres out, tried to play on and messed upmhis shot for goal.

Jake Spencer had 45 hit outs and kicked the winning goal. Brent Moloney had 20 touches, 12 clearances and four tackles.

Other stats: Morton 27, Panozza & Gysberts 26.

Michael Evans had 19 disposals and two goals in limited game time in his first outing for the year after a back injury.

Mitch Gent played the first half in the development league game and was called up late to play in the seniors at Windy Hill. He finished the game with 19 disposals and kicked two vital goals in the final quarter.

The Scorpions defence was strong all day. Troy Davis worked hard down back and took some telling marks, Nev Jetta had 19 disposals, Brayden Salton had 24 touches and Michael Riseley did an important job on a tough opponent.

With the injury situation at Melbourne it's amazing that the Scorpions keep coming up every week. On top of that they have three of their own best players out with injury - Matthews, Lees and Nicholls - and yet they keep coming up every week with new players who adapt well to the game at this level.

Fortunately, they have a bye next week to charge the batteries and regenerate.

Really good to see Evans back, Pencil getting sharper & the Scorps developing a "Winning" feeling...

Congrats to Evans on his solid return.

Interesting re, 'Page', TSmith, & I can't remember what Gent looks like. I'll check when I watch the replay. Also Luke Tynan played well last week & a few games this year.

Hows his kicking & ball drop?

I have seen him a few times, I was down at Casey pre season a number of times, and even though he wasnt taking part in the main group, he was recovering from a injury. I watched his body language and how he was taking part in what is was able to do with the recovery group. Looks impressive, but has a way to go yet. He is a big lump of a lad, moves well, has good hands. Worth hanging onto next year. If he can do a full pre season, he could be an assett. Work in progress, and will come down to how hard he wants to work.

So far his only downside is, I have yet to see him in all of the games I have watched, gets only more than a few inches off the ground to take mark,

Looks strong on a lead, and wont be easy knocked off the ball, but I like to see him take some pack marks. But I dont know if he has a leap.

If you can watch yesterdays game against Bendigo, he chose to knock the ball in mid air, to another player in space. Result.. goal.

Thats a footy brain, that you cant teach. Hope that helps. Its about as much as I have on him.

thanks mate really appreciate it! i wouldn't mind if they hung onto him next year considering james magner and dan nicholson will get upgraded and lawrence most likely get the chop.

The main issue I see for Williams is athleticism. He has a good footy brain and is a selfless and smart type with nice skills, but he's only about 193cm and doesn't move or leap all that quickly, so with a full preseason I can certainly see him been a very good VFL player but whether he has it in him to become AFL level I'm not so sure.

Gent kicks a beauty from the boundary and there's only 5 points in it.

KC ....have you met Mitch Gent??

Is he possibly the son of former Essendon player(and wounded Vietnam Nam veteran), Keith Gent?

I think Keith lives up in Queensland now, and he'd be 67, so perhaps Mitch is even possibly his grandson. Do you know how old he is , and where he was recruited from?

JJC - never met Mitch personally.

His history is that he played TAC Cup Under 18s in 2010 for the Dandenong Stingrays and would be about 20 years of age. He's182cm and 75kg, had a few games in the Casey Seniors and could develop into a midfielder.

As you know, Casey is having one of it's now regular byes this week but the club features prominently in this week's Inside Football VFL section with a Phil Cleary story on coach Brett Lovett, a lengthy write up on promising first year player Tim Smith by Paul Amy and another piece on the club getting up in tight finishes.

Also in the news:-

• Casey Fields will host the VFL Semi Finals (Week 2 of the finals series;

• two of Casey's five remaining games will be televised live; and

• two of the six AFL listed players who represented Northern Blues reserves winning team (by 2 points) against Casey Scorpions last week at Preston, Tom Bell and Levi Casboult, have been selected to make their debuts tonight with Carlton while the other four have been promoted to the Northern Blues senior team.

IF he did make it to AFL it would really be a bigger story than Podsiadly - local league boy, near death experience....etc ...etc.

Good luck to him for even getting this far.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
