Schadenfreude and Roman Holidays

By definition Schadenfreude is a German term meaning to take joy in others displeasure and a Roman holiday translates to roughly the same thing. National holidays in ancient Rome consisted of taking the kids to the arena buying them a dubious looking piece of goat on a stick and then spending a good part of the day watching men kill each other. My question to the masses is can you personally still actually go to a demons game and enjoy yourself? I found myself having this drunken debate with a fellow demons supporter at a bar last night with the resolution was yes yes you can, but you have to be a sadist. So the term Schadenfreude needs to become mien (my in German) Schadenfreude or my own Roman Holiday as a rough translation "taking joy in your own displeasure". I work 50-60 hours a week and appear to be genetically pre disposed to be genuinely grumpy. Do I really need to try and wring some happiness or joy from our weekly spanking? In theory it would be nice but the only way to actually enjoy a demons game as a spectacle and not feel miserable at the final siren is to treat the whole things as a farce. Next time you see Morton running down the wing only to kick it out of bounds with no pressure, laugh. Jamar taps the ball directly to an opponent, smile and not approvingly. Molony pulls the old don't argue only to get gang tackled and pinged for holding the ball, cackle like a mad old witch and when some buck toothed opposition supporter informs you in colourful language that your team isn't worth their dental plan sagely agree with them and compliment them on the astute observations. Will I be at the game tonight, you bet, just look for the demons supporter with a big blond beard grinning from ear to ear and laughing like a mad man.

BDP, you ain't alone pal, I reckon the majority of us Dee supporters are mad or sadist, luckily for me I watch from afar on tv, will b there on QB tho with mum, but your rite when all you can do, OR should do is laugh at some of our mistakes, it could b a 2hr comedy show at times, laughing's gotta b better for ya than anger and frustration, as with me golf, I only allow 10 sec of personal abuse after a crap shot,(adds up to a lot of PA after 18 holes), so i use this method when watching our Dee's, plus the fact that i've become so use to it from so many years supporting em'. Luckily for us all that it is only a GAME. Will look out for the blond beard on QB and have a laugh with ya pal

Mate glad you've joined me, I've been doing this on and off for 10 years. Most people I'm sure think I'm mad but if I didn't laugh in the face of absurdity I'd probably have given myself a stroke by now. Oddly I get angrier in years where the Demons are going OK because it annoys me more when for instance we lose twice to bottom placed Carlton in 2006 costing us a top 4 chance rather than in a year where we struggle to win a game at all. I already know where shite this year and no hope of making the finals so what's the point in going grey over it?

That is probably the only sane way to enjoy watching the Demons .(To go insane).Once you are insane you really are not legally bound to follow the laws and etiquettes of the land .Maybe you could make a sign."Hey Cale-KICK IT TO ME!"Great post and sage advice -I'm tired of the emotional attachment myself .
