Melbourne has too many supporters that fit this below description: (please add your experiences/opinions)

I sat behind a guy with a family who saw fit to complain about almost every MFC player throughout the St Kilda game. Now all Melbourne supporters should, and would have been in the right to, have been angry at the first four rounds...But when they perform well and most importantly show genuine effort and hunger to wear the red-and-blue, we should be backing them.

This individual, with a family at the game saw fit to single out three players.

Jack Watts

Cale Morton

Aaron Davey

Now Davey played his best game for about 3 years, so this was absurd.

With Watts, it actually had little to do with the football, If Jack was within 50 m of something poor happening on the ground, the fault was attributed to him.

Cale Morton looked like an AFL footballer for the first time ever - yet this [censored] seemed intent on lambasting him and repeatedly calling him "chicken legs"...Not a problem, but it was said with such spite.

This occurred for well over an hour of the game - unfortunately I think this guy had 3AW at max volume for the duration, so it was pretty hard to put him in his place.

There are MFC Supporters who go year in year out, and then there are people who seem attached to the club as if its some kind of burden...we don't need you (but please please please buy membership each year!)

ALL 3 are fair targets for his consternation

Nath Jones, beamer, Mitch, Rivers, Magernficent are about the only ones who have done themselves any justice this year

sorry but its true

I would prefer honest supporters like this one to the 'hey boys lose by as much as you want we love you anyway hurrah!' types

Watts had a poor game.

Morton is the constant whipping boy, who i think has played the past 2 games reasonably well (he needs to string quite a few more together though)

Davey's situation frustrates me. It was DB who tried to develop Davey into a midfielder. He has definitely gotten bigger in muscle size since 2004 and has lost a lot of pace, so the role he is now playing is hindered by his loss of pace. He re-invented the FP position, and is now suffering from it. He gets to the right spots but no longer has explosive pace (Jones seemed quicker as a pack crumber).

What really irritated me was some of our players continually took their eyes off the ball before they had possession and subsequently let the ball slip (Grimes), and many times whilst our tackling was very good, some (Bail) held on way too long.

I'm also a little worried about Trengove, given he has pretty much done bugger all in his games this season.

Some say he paid his money so he is entitled to express his opinion. I don't agree. I have played sport at a decent enough level for many years to know sometimes things just happen on the field that you cant explain. Sometimes the harder you try the worse it gets. I was never gifted with talent but there was no one fitter or who gave more. This is why I hate hearing people on here slate Barty, Joel Mac and others in the past they give their all for the red and the blue and they have played more AFL games than I and most on Demonland.

Armchair sports stars tell you how to do things and what they would do, but it aint easy. Some players make it look easy and have natural talent, desire and the ability to go that extra bit. While others have talent and give what is their best. Players of all different levels and talents are pieces in the team jigsaw and it is so hard to get them all together for the ultimate.

Yes I get angry with the boys at times but never would I personally attack any of them, I don't have the right no matter how much money I spend or put into the club. I do not know the mindset or the personal circumstances of the individuals. Im not right or wrong its just my personal opinion

The team gave a great effort tonight.

100 tackles and pure commitment, They just didn't have the finishing skills but as one who has been highly critical of the team's effort I was thrilled with it tonight,

I just can't see why there is such a gulf week to week in their intensity. If they gave that every week I'd be happy.

Yep was a very good effort - now let's see them back that up next week and the week after and the week after. That's the issue with MFC sides over the years they do that for one week then think they've done enough and drop off again. That is the minimum standard, we shouldn't have to praise them just for having a dip - the next step is to do that on a consistent basis and get some wins on the board.

Terrible thread pitchfork. All teams have a very diverse cross section of supporters and were no worst or better than any other side in the comp. For gods sake it's the footy for crying out loud not church, why are people so touchy about what's happening in the stands?? If people wish to go and sit quietly with their radio and watch the game so be it, if people wish to go to the game, have a few beers and scream their lungs out that is absolutely fine. I don't know why so many people have problems or object to what's happening in the stands at our matches. We get approx 20 thousand people to most of our matches in a stadium that holds 100 so if you don't like what's happening around you frickin move FFS

What is a good supporter & what is a Bad supporter, & can you actually tell from one meeting where you haven't even sat & had a conversation?

I could easily say that supporters who do nothing more than total blind support, have stifled this club, aiding apathy..

Theres good and bad in every thing in this world. depending on your perspectives around things.

Maybe IF we were a little more hard to please, we wouldn't be in a situation where we haven't won a premiership for 47 odd years of footy.

Not sure we're easily pleased dl , and I don't believe that's the reason we haven't won a flag for yonks . I've met many Demon fans who are hard markers . There's a whole combination of reasons in my opinion .

Doggies haven't won a flag for 57 years , the Saints 45 , Tigers 31 . The Pies have only won 2 in 53 years and even Carlton have only won 1 in the last 24 years . Surely all those teams lack of success can't be because all their supporters are easily pleased .

As for the opening post from 'pitchfork' . All supporter groups have fans such as the one you encountered . 'Spose we're not known for our "boisterous" behavoir . I went to see our Demons in many games at Victoria Park - a frightening experience at the best of times . The fans there gave a whole new meaning to "turning on their players and their own" .

Cheers

Agree with all of this. I know that I've often derided the ferals supporting some other clubs for hurling abuse at their own players. It sickens me to see it happening in our club. Criticism is one thing, but far too often you see people taking petty satisfaction from hurling insults and abuse at the team they are supposedly supporting, and often with little or no basis in reality. How about showing a little character and supporting the team through both the good times and the bad? Even better, if you can't do that, don't bother showing up to games and let those of us who can enjoy our day.

What's honest about mindless player abuse?

And why not give us some examples of the 'hey boys lose by as much as you want we love you anyway hurrah!' types. I can't say I read every post on every thread here, but where on this site has anyone ever said that?

Be good for you to back up some of what you're posting. As if it matters.

186 shouldn't be tolerated again, this team is in the process of creating a game style to see that it doesn't have to be.

Small minded and short sighted "supporters" need to look past the end of thier nose.

As dandeeman said, this is about 186, and building toward a premiership. Poor play should not be tolerated by any supporter - but the kind of effort they put in on saturday night, will garner wins once it becomes habit.

I note you're "signature" is the R18 2004 ladder with the caption "last time we were good" - well we finished 5th that season. The team was pleasing, but had a soft core...It's funny that your definition of good is ladder position at an immediate point in time. That team lost their first final (though did provide the whelan bump/tj goal one of the best plays in MFC history!).

We need to build a team on solid foundations, and supporters need to encourage the kind of behaviour and standards that get us there - so it does make the blood boil when an fwit, lambasts a guy like Joel Mac after a poor disposal and seemingly is blind to the fact that he follows that disposal up immediately and moves with the ball about 100m down the field

I actually like this thread, it backs up what i have been saying, there are some supporters out there who actually seem to love to wallow in the misery all the time, they think the light they see at the end of the tunnel is the train!!, why do they go to games, don't bother, and even don't buy a membership, I am sure we could miss out on about the 10 or 20 I have actually heard in the last few years

Everybody gets frustrated with the way we play sometimes, but unless you want to come out from behind your 'nickname' and identify yourself as an ex VFL/AFL player who played more than one game......you have your opinion on certain players and you are entited to it, but not all of us agree with continually bagging them.....keep it to yourself, I jump straight over any post that contains crap like that, so I may miss something good you have to say.

On Joel Mac, I spoke to Jade Rawlings about him, said he needs to nickname him 'Crazy Horse' after a former soccer player for Liverpool called Emlyn Hughes...he would rush everywhere at 100mph, make horrendous howlers, but he would time and time again put his body on the line to stop a goal....and occasionally do something completely amazing, to me that is Joel Mac and he can put you on a roller coaster each time he gets the ball, but he is fun to watch, remember footy is fun

I sat in front of a so called supporter in Darwin last year who did the same thing to Cale Morton, but in this case, I turned around pretty early and told him to shut up if he didn't have anything good to say, as he was supposedly there 'supporting'...he did

I actually think there is a distinction between reving up the players and flat out abusing them. (e.g. "You need to go harder than that Grimesy!" as opposed to "You're a disgrace Grimes!"). Maybe that's just my twisted logic kicking in.

It's like that one time I was at the footy and there was this fat nuff nuff screaming "you're a wimp Wilson, what have you come here for? You're a WIMMMP" then I gave him a fisherman's friend- politely pointed out that there was no one on the field by the name of "Wilson" and he swiftly went into his shell.

I had the displeasure of having one such supporter behind me in the MCC for the first quarter on Saturday night. After 25 minutes of constant derision and abuse - mostly directed at Watts, despite him often having no responsibility for the passage of play - I turned around and asked the bloke if he was for real.

Bluster and bravado from the portly old bloke followed, I ignored it and he largely shut up shop for the rest of the quarter. Even better, his mates left him sitting in the rain as it began to tumble down.

I am happily among the first to give it to our players when they deserve it but constant carping and biased abuse does nothing for the cause, let alone the experience of other supporters sitting in earshot. And those who hide behind the 'honesty' excuse when they're doing nothing but tearing players down need to take a good hard look at themselves.

It's warranted if they also have a flip side to there negative [censored] whipping attitude

You need to praise worth where it is due but I maintain If there was a

Mid season draft 2 yrs ago C Morton would've been on it.

Yes, because there are only two types of fans.
