More great news...

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/jamar-high-on-giants-ruck-list-20120404-1wdac.html

GWS are able to sign Jamar as a free agent at the end of season.

We need to lock away The Russian ASAP because it is obviously important from a football perspective but it would also be good to create some positive publicity around the club.

IMO GWS are more likely to go after Ryder who is apparently out of contract, a lot younger and has a good relationship with Sheeds.

He said he wants to stay at MFC. Offer him what's he's worth to us and if he doesn't take it, see you later! We've seriously had so much bad news in relation to the MFC in the last few weeks I just don't give a flying over anyone that would want leverage off us.

Incidentally in relation to the article with so many payers being free agent at the end of this year why has the article chosen to highlight Jamar? Is there a concerted effort going on somewhere to hover a black cloud over the MFC?

Wouldnt be a huge loss we need to get rid of one of him or Martin anyway I think. We still have Martin Clark & Gawn if he goes. I like Russian but he's had one awesome year and about 8 average ones.

Didn't he just sign rescently?

I thought so also, there was an article doing the rounds before the start of the season saying he wants to be a demon for life, guess he hasn't signed as yet though??

Free agency will be a good addition, and at least with our version of it clubs are compensated. Jamar's getting on, and if he goes and we receive a compensatory pick it's not the apocalypse.

I would however like to see the AFL introduce something similar to the NFL's franchise player tag, where every club can nominate one player each off-season who they haven't yet agreed to terms with, who has to stay with the team, or if they leave, the club that takes them must give them two first round picks.

Russian will stay. He said so at the start of the year and I'll take him

At his word. As for why they lead with Jamar - Melbourne is the story of the week and you have to make hay while the sun shine.

I'm sure we will be able to do a sensible deal with him, besides he's got this weekend to get over yet. Not the end of the world. Gawn, Martin and Spencer in the wings.

Not concerned, time and time again he's said that he wants to repay the faith Melbourne showed in him. I think he wants to be a one club player

Jamar's a bit of a battler that's had one good year of footy. I'll be far from concerned if he leaves. Players like Giles from GWS and Redden at Port have shown that it's not hard to recruit/develop competent ruckman. Redden looked fantastic in his first game, which he may not have played if Lobbe wasn't injured. Jacobs left Carlton for more opportunity and he's very competent.

Mike Sheehan wrote a couple of years ago that it would just about be the end of the road if Melbourne couldn't convince Davey to stay. Yeah, right..

Benny-boy, for me it is all about getting a good midfielder. Just one. We have the structure but no heart. We need a heart. We have the supporting cast; we need a star. If Jamar goes and we can get another decent pick and another potential mid, well, that is fine. We have martin & clark; spencer and fitzpatrick are developing...oh and gawn, who I think shows a bit to go on with. I'd trade almost anyone for one very good mid.

Exactly my thinking.

We don't want to be rebuilding forever, but I think we have at least the raw tools in all positions bar the midfield now.

Jamar has been good the last few years, but our younger rucks have shown the capability to step into the fold, while Russian just gets older.

We may see an exodus of Jamar and Moloney, but I'd only see that as possibly a good thing.

Load up in this draft of all drafts, then develop, develop, develop.

It's going to take longer than we want, and we were promised back in 07, but there's nothing we can do about that now.

Either way we get compensation.

But I would like to see the Russian be a One Club Player with Us...

He's done the tough Yards & I think knows much about the struggles to be an AFL player. This type of person to me should be the type we want to keep.

Stay on Mark.

What is it with clubs wanting our players. Richmond has 2 rejects, Hawthorn have two playing at Box hill, Carlton has 1 playing VFL, Collingwood have 1 at VFL, GWS now has 2 going for 3, Gold Coast has 1 and we offloaded another to Brisbane that is now finished, don't these clubs know we have sucked for the past 5 years.

Trying to even up the competion

If that is the case can someone offer us a pick 4 for Morton, a pick 12 for Cook and pick 13 and 14 for Dunn and Bate, that would really help us to even up.

And this article backs it up:

I think losing Jamar would be in our best interests, as distasteful as it is.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
