Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

possibly doubling up the thread but had a look through and couldn't easily spot one so here we go.

was just having a look at the MFC website, specifically our player list, and i thought to myself; if they were all fit who would be the best 22? the results may shock some, others may agree but it should create a healthy debate for 70ish days i hope.

C: bail jones nicholson

HF: howe watts sylvia

FF: petterd clark jurrah

FOLL: jamar trengove moloney

INT: mckenzie martin mcdonald (blease)

i believe the versatility of our talls means that the likes of martin and mcdonald could potentially play both down back in the ruck and up forward in the one game to help with rotations.

i went for sellar down back instead of rivers. from reports i think he's big enough to stand toe to toe with the likes of cloke, dawes, petrie which rivers struggled with and i think garland is quite capable of playing 3rd man up.

blease as sub in my opinion adds a genuine and dangerous burst of speed coming up to 3/4 time and into the last stanza without bringing into question his fitness base.

unlucky: green, davey, bate, gysberts, magner

good to see this isn't even scratching the surface, just praying that we can keep this kind of depth without TOO many outs during the season.

Here's mine

I think the back line is really interesting and I reckon we will garland play on small to medium players this and give us some real drive off half back, so I could see frawley , rivers, garland and sellar in the back line at times this year depending on the size of the opposition forwards, I've left out Sylvia due to suspension and davey as he needs to earn a position

B bartram, frawley, rivers

HB garland, sellar, bennell

C nicholson, trengove, jones

Hf Howe , watts , blease

F jurrah, Clark , green

Ruck jamar , moloney, gysberts

Int Martin, mckenzie, tapacott, petterd

What do people think ?

Just a few points re your lineup:

1. Sylvia is suspended for round 1

2. Nicholson is (currently) a rookie

3. Strauss is coming back from a serious injury, and although he is making remarkable progress by all accounts, I would think it highly unlikely that he will be fit for round 1.

I have given this a bit of thought too, and I would look at

BENNELL FRAWLEY RIVERS

TAPSCOTT SELLAR GARLAND

TRENGOVE MOLONEY BAIL

GREEN WATTS HOWE

DAVEY CLARK JURRAH

JAMAR MCKENZIE JONES

MARTIN BLEASE JETTA (PETTERD)

All lineups at this stage of course are highly speculative: pre-season Ansett/Wizard/etc Cup form, injuries and fitness etc etc

Always fun to discus though

A few points from above best 22s:

- Why would anybody leave Grimes out of the best 22?

- Strauss won't be ready for round 1... i'd be looking for a VFL return for 6-7 weeks before AFL return, so minimum a mid-season AFL return

- I believe Seller was brought in to play the gorilla forwards, which only 7 or 8 teams actually have. He will be 4th in line behind Frawley, Garland and Rivers

Garland Frawley Grimes

Bail Rivers Tapscott

Howe Moloney Sylvia

Jurrah Watts Petterd

Green Clark Davey

Jamar Trengove McKenzie

Int: Martin, Jones, Gysberts + Blease (sub)

Unlucky= Bennel and Morton. Should be best 22 players, but due to a terribly inconsistent 2011, will need to prove themselves.

Injured= Strauss and Gawn

Depth players who only get games due to injury from best 22 players: Bate (Mid), Dunn (HFF), Bartram (HBF), Jetta (Mid), Macdonald (HBF), Spenser (Ruck), Seller (KPD)

Developing players who will play majority in VFL but should be blooded a few games: Cook (KPF), Davis (KPD), Fitzpatrick (KPF/Ruck), McDonald (KPD/KPF), Taggert (mid/forward), Tynan (HBF)

Rookies: Evans, Nicholson, Lawrence, Tom Couch, James Magner, Jai Sheehan, Leigh Williams

Depending on opposition:

FB: Rivers Frawley Bennell

HB: Grimes Garland Tapscott

C: Jones Moloney Blease

HF: Davey Watts Howe

FF: Jurrah Clark Green

R: Jamar Trengove McKenzie

I/C: Gysberts, Petterd, Martin & Bail.

- Rivers to play that floating role, Chip is just a gimme & Bennell to take a crumber

- Grimes & Tappy quarterbacks. Garland I like at CHB, is a spoiling machine.

- Moloney owns the centre. Jones can run all day and Blease can rest down forward.

- Forward line is flexible. All six can play anywhere and rotate deep for breathers.

- Rucks are a certain. Gotta have McKenzie he is all heart.

- Interchange is really flexible and god I hope I havent missed out on a gimme

Never tried this, but I'll have a crack:

FB: Garland Frawley Grimes

HB: Tapscott Rivers Morton

C: Bail Moloney Gysberts

HF: Davey Watts Blease

FF: Green Clark Howe

R: Jamar Jones Trengove

I/C: McKenzie Martin Petterd (sub: Bennell)

Sylvia to come in rd 2 obviously - drop whoever doesn't perform rd 1.

Love Bartram's endeavour, but if you can't kick in today's football, you cost your team dearly. I can remember too clearly the West Coast game at Etihad when he fluffed 2 gimme goals whilst we were making a comeback. Killed any chance we had and shattered the morale of the team. He lost me that day.

I am hopeful Fitzpatrick will make a play for a spot in the 22 at some stage this year, but not brave enough to slot him in for round 1.

Jurrah doesn't get a game in my round 1 team because he is too far behind the rest of the group in terms of training and fitness and despite his undoubted ability, I think it would be good for him to fight for a spot in the team and develop the hunger to be an AFL superstar.

McDonald unfortunately has poor disposal and decision making and I can't fit him in for round 1 despite my great admiration for the way he goes about his football.

Nicholson is close and I expect he will be first cab off the rank for promotion from the rookie list, but still can't fit him in ahead of those named.

Jetta is underdone after major off-season shoulder surgery. Would love him in the team... don't know at whose expense.

Sellar is an unknown to me and I can't name him based on what I don't know.

Strauss is not expected to play for some time still.

Green is still a star and deserves a spot in the team for round 1. As for his captaincy... I think he played better footy without it.

Rookies: Evans, Nicholson, Lawrence, Tom Couch, James Magner, Jai Sheehan, Leigh Williams

... one of these will play round 1, possible even two. e.g. Nicholson plus one of Couch or Magner.

Competition for spots could make the NAB games interesting.

Re other posts above, I wouldn't mind betting Bartram will play every game. Neeld said he wanted us to be hard to play against, and Bartram's the most belligerant stopper we have.

Emg. Rivers Strauss Gysberts

Morton undeserved

Jetta is a maybe player

Mcdonald still developing

Joel Mac is cover now

Magner and Couch need to prove themselves

Tynan Taggert can develop in VFL

Cook will never develop into a bigger body and unless he makes good strides in the next two years good be facing the clutch in 2013, much like Fitzpatrick this year.

We have a lot of depth, thanks Barry Prendergast, and like Bailey always wanted competition for spots is now at its peak. Bailey, who i really hated but when i reflec was right in what he said many times about creating depth and that is exactly what he has helped achieve. We have a lot of fringe players and this is becoming a problem when selecting the best 22 because anyone could pop up in the pre season. Many older heads may look for a trade come years end, Rivers and Joel Mac, so could some of our fringe, Jetta, Morton, Fitzy. I think we will be the most active in the trade period this year mainly because of the amount of fringe players we have. We may land some good talent in the trade period this year. Bailey's vision is becoming a reality, shame he was a terrible tactician and gameday coach. I think he will look on in anger and envy in the next few years, poor man!

Nice effort I reckon and you make good sense. We look a little slow through the centre though. Ball carriers like Blease, Davey, Bail and Bennell are going to need to step up.

I have a feeling Neeld will have a soft spot for Nev Jetta and he and Bate will be around the mark. None of these help us with what could be a lack of leg speed.

Blease Tapscott unlucky, Morton in hope and Sylvia to come in....boy the NAB is going to be interesting for all concerned, especially Nicholson who is likely to get the nod and put the pressure on for a spot. And Sellar who doesn't get a look in until he is a known quantity.

I agree with a lot of what Sylvinator has said.

However, I think Neeld will be keen to play Clark Sellar and one of Magner and Couch in the first game

I also think that a number of players who are either in rehab or simply aren't fit will not be considered as Neeld will not feel that they have enough "work" in them. Therefore I have not included McKenzie, Tapscott, Jurrah, Strauss, Petterd, or Davey. I haven't considered Sylvia

Now that Gawn is gone, we can upgrade two rookies

Jetta Frawley Garland

Grimes Sellar Nicholson

Jones Moloney Bail

Howe Watts Green(Sylvia)

Bennell Clark Bate

Jamar Trengove Gysberts

Martin Magner/Couch Blease Bartram (sub)

    GAMEDAY: Rd 07 vs Richmond

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The Dees will have to be switched on tonight. A win will keep them in the hunt for the Top 4 whilst a loss could see them fall out of the 8 for the first time since 2020.

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
