Frawley as captain just wouldn't work.

I want Frawley to beat his man. Every time. Period.

If he is focusing on making sure the rest of the team to keep their positions and formations whilst encouraging the younger players and barking orders then his opponent will break free and beat him. It would only take half a second of distraction for a Buddy Franklin or Steven Milne to get the jump on him.

He wouldn't have time to run over to a player and give them a pat on the back or a quick word of encouragement.

The comparison to Maxwell or Harley are irrelevant as they take the third and forth best forwards. They don't have to have the same level of concentration.

Frawley a leader in the back line? Yes. Hell yes. Hell yes with a cherry on top. Frawley as captain of the whole team? No.

It's funny how we all view what happens on a footy field quite differently. I don't overly rate Moloney as a footballer and reckon we've been beset with his type for decades, which is one of the reasons that real success has escaped us. Like others, I feel that he's found wanting when pitted against elite midfielders, but holds his own against lesser lights. Imo, he would have hardly got a game at Geelong over the last 5 years. In other words, I don't want him to captain our club as I feel the station to be above him. For this same reason I don't want Jones.

Btw, I know people will point to his top 10 finish in the Brownlow this year as well as a win in the B&F, etc, but these accolades aren't nearly as meritorious when you're the best and one of the most most senior of a pretty ordinary lot. As mentioned, we all have differing opinions of players that represent this club.

Agree with you on this, I need to see Brent playing good football against the good midfields (Hawthorn, Geelong, Collingwood, Carlton) and not just beating up on the others. If he is to be a leader he also needs to look at using his team mates and not trying to barge through packs and or bomb the ball, he gets away with this against the younger sides but really struggles against the strong more mature midfields. If he continues to play football this way then he would not be a definite starter in a Neeld side if the Collingwood mids approach (work for each other and pick the best option) is anything to go by. I think it is going to be a big challenge for him this year.

I understand the argument that a leader has to get on the field, but no player should be ruled out of contention because of injury potential, because every single AFL player is at risk of season/career ending injury at all times.

For as long as Grimes is a starting 18 players when fit, he is as viable an option for captaincy as anyone.

Despite the monumental changes that our club and list have gone through in Grimes' time, he has consistently been spoken of as a leader. He apparently did some great things off the field last year while injured, and he leads by example when he's playing.

I'm not suggesting he is the only choice, or even the right choice because I wouldn't know enough intimate club details to make that call, but he absolutely should be considered. Injuries or no injuries.

Although games wise they are similar, Grimes has been on board for 2 more years then Trengove which I feel is a big difference, especially this early in someones career. Also, he is obviously displaying wonders with his leadership with winning the Leadership Award this year.

You can't predict injuries and I don't know why people would use the excuse that Grimes has suffered from too many in the past not to captain.

I hate co-captains and the MFC have never had them, but I wonder whether Trengove may be appointed as a co-captain with Grimes, or perhaps Green. Michael Voss was made co-captain when he was 21 with Alistair Lynch before he took the sole mantle.

They're both still kids there's not much difference between them other than Grimes issue with injuries. They'd both make great leaders but would rather give it to Trengove so Grimes can focus solely on getting himself right without having to worry about leading the team as well.

Trengove did say in an interview he was willing to play in any position the club required of him. Maybe im over analyzing it but perhaps he was suggesting also that he would be willing to play any role (captain) the club required of him.

he has a chronic back injury that he will have to manage all his life, not just for his football career. Every single game we get out of Frank is a bonus.

If he had chronic soft tissue injuries, I'd agree.

But he has had a back issue which has been fixed since changing his running style.

He then experienced a few soft tissue injuries whilst playing a lot of impressive games.

Then the medical staff found a hot spot and kept him off the track to prevent stress fractures - identical to Garland, Jamar and countless others at other clubs.

This is a common occurrence and it is now commonly known how to deal with it - he will return to full fitness.

He is nothing more than a victim of recent bad luck, with no cause to assume it will continue.
