A rule of thumb ( in hindsight ) sugests what ever you want to get, double the offering to do the deal. And whatever you think we'll get in return , halve it.

Keep in mind folks..deals are done when there are advantages to both parties...not one being scammed ( well not anymore )

First post so go easy. I'm not quite sure why there is a huge push by some to trade into the club older, relatively unsuccessful fringe kp players. If you take a longer view, we are travelling reasonably well in terms of developing kpp's. The key, surely, is giving them time. For instance, how can some possibly write off Lucas Cook at this stage. It's ludicrous. I have been down to Casey and, before he was injured Cook was moving well and looking threatening.

What I would like to see is the club looking to bring in young mids with a little desperation and mongrel. Viney is exciting but the great sides always seem to have two or three that can rotate - think West Coast in their prime, Geelong, Hawks. It gives these sides a relentlessness that provides the psychological edge. Related to Swans Luke Parker, so incredibly biased but there's a kid who is ferocious with his attack on the ball. If we're going to go after someone make it along those lines.

Welcome and not a bad start there R2G. For many its an impatient desire for some success. For others its a lack of understanding of the process. For some its a sort of afl-low -esteem syndrome whereby its to be assume that surely some other club;s NQR's are automatically better than our own.

We know Rome wasnt built in a day...but some cant wait. Having said that weve all sat through repeated illusions dressed up new-beginnings.

I sense youve looked at our warehouse of young talent and can see that there is indeed a group of players we need to persevere with .

I also feel that while these wil lbe kept the FD might , if possible attempt to garner some value for those that simply wont be here ( mfc) for the long haul. Its opportunistic rather than shortsightedly naive.

in regard to your midfield Viney and trengove, gysberts 2013 + excite me have the makings of good midfield. Bail & Barts (yes Barts) will be quality run with players, Jones and Beamer are absolute in and under but cant use the ball like the greats. I honestly think once our boys develop and if we get an A grade outsider Jones and Beamr will become Mike Sheehann Top 50'S as there main strengths will be noticed and their weaknesses's will be less scrutinised. We are on he upward slope fans just need to be patient

Just changing tack and going back to the Draft Combine, here's an interesting article from American researchers who have cast doubt on the correlation between results from the NFL's draft combine and actual success on the football field. The NFL combine: does it predict performance in the National Football League?

Work needs to be done on the type of tests used if improved results are to be achieved.

I suspect GWS would have doubts about priming the MFC to have O'Meara, Crouch and Viney arriving in 2013... Their (and their AFL paymasters) entire build and business plan is premised on GWS being near a premiership in 5 years when the next TV rights are up for grabs (same for GC) and facing a MFC midfield with those three additions (in addition to what we have) would cause them to pause and spread the picks elsewhere.

I was actually thinking that GWS wouldn't want to be dealing with GCS for this exact reason- why would they want to make a team that has been given similar concessions to themselves even stronger, especially considering both clubs will be aiming for a similar premiership window?

It would make a lot more sense for GWS to deal with MFC for our two compensation picks which they can then use over a five year period, as opposed to pretty-much putting all of their hopes into the weak 2011 draft pool (assuming the proposed pick 4 in 2011 + 1 compo pick to be used in next five years from GCS was to go through) and making a team that on paper will be considered their closest rival even stronger...

I agree Pennant. I also wouldn't necessarily assume Bate , Dunn, Maric etc are dispensable. It may be the red hair but it would be interesting to see whether Bate could play a run with role such as that performed by Ling. Remember that Ling was almost gone a number of years ago.

I'll jump i here and back up my fellow ranga's(well i'm as close to red as you can get) Bate and Lingy. We might not have talent but generally as a race we are hard.

But seriously depth from 2013 will be our strength it's all very good trading for stars but what will get this club over the line I don't know if I knew that I would be a rich man just offering my 2 cents as an avid supporter. I have know doubt we have the talent and good kids at hand I believe from here on in Prendergast and Neeld etc putting the final pieces into the jigsaw is where it gets really difficult and where you earn your quids. Plenty of good sides over the last 20 years have been moulded but getting that extra to get you over the line is where it gets difficult.

I was having this exact conversation two days ago. Ling was a fat full forward when he went to Geelong and their dimensions aren't super different. Bate has already shown he can run through the middle. The challenge is for Bate to show the coach he can be a big bodied negating mid. But I'd only have him in this role. It's the last roll of the dice for him.

As to the clubs agreeing to the rules, I think that's a contentious issue because the feeling is that they were ramroaded through by the big bloke who runs the whole thing.

I think it's pretty easy to dismiss something a bit different or to highlight why something won't work, but it's definitely worth a try. Bate showed value in the midfield against Port and while I don't believe he's an offensive midfielder's bootlace, it's worth looking at him in the Ling role. Ling might not have Bate's turning circle, but he's hardly cat-like.

But in all likelihood Bate will request a trade and it will be granted. If he stays on the list it's worth trying something new. Nothing to lose.

Funny I posted a thread some years ago that essentially suggested that this is exacatly the modus operandi and a reason Melbourne struggled at times as it came down to inconvenient timing in our respect. We, like a few others are victims of the overt 'expansion' and world domination that seems to be Vlads desire.

Many laugh at al this, and yes some can be rightly questioned as possibly blinkered but to omuch happens with 'strange ' results to dismiss all out of hand.

Moloney, for all that he does well, is a limited footballer in some ways, and I think he has some huge currency.

Not likely, but a cold hard evaluation would raise it as a possibility.

Similarly Jurrah.

This is a bit stupid, and I rarely have dreams involving footy, but I dreamt that Jurrah was traded to Adelaide.

I laughed in the morning at how stupid the dream was, but it made me question the merit of it.

Young and supremely talented, but with a new coach coming in, who knows?

You'd think his currency would be high.

His body seems like it could be a bit frail.

Elite skillset but what about the rest?

Doesn't go in hard enough for the footy, doesn't chase anywhere near as hard as I'd like, defensively is lacking.

A lot like Davey in some ways. Who knows with a new coach coming in?

If we did move any of those players, it wouldn't just be for the same of it - we'd only do it for an exceptional return.

Dee's trade both Scully compo picks & Aaron Davey to GWS for O'meara & a player in the mould of a Krakour, Mzengu trade.

Essendon trade Alwyn Davey too GWS for an improved draft pick & a player in the mould of Krakour, Mzengu trade.

Davey brothers united at GWS!

Sheedy would be all over this... He would be wanting to add indigenous talent.

Ok, I'll throw some names out and expect to be howled at, but here goes:

Moloney - I reckon we'd be the first club in history to actually trade the B&F winner of that year, forgetting that he'd be in contention for the captaincy next year.

Jurrah - One of a few marketable players, he had a bad year in 2011, but one bad year at his age does not mean he is done and should be traded. Had a hell of a lot to deal with, and I knew a tough year would come once the opposition started to respect his ability, once he becomes a second/third tall forward with a knack for crumming we will see his true ability.

Rivers - Much the same as Moloney, and he has always had so much support for his leadership abilities, something we sorely lack.

Green and Davey both had terrible years, but they are experienced players, again something we lack. I'm backing both of them to get back on track in 2012, but they may need to adjust their playing styles to Neeled's.

Reading into what Damian Barrett is saying on Twitter, I feel we'll try to offload a few of our picks with the likes of Bate/Dunn/Maric and perhaps Spencer as sweeteners. Especially when he says that we've got room from Scully's departure.

Re: Moloney, I just get personally frustrated at his lack of flexibility, and I think his lack of ability outside of stoppages.

With Barrett, I think he's probably just been reading bigfooty again.

I think he's alluding to a Dangerfield type deal, not necessarily anyone leaving, purely because he knows we have cap space, and based on nothing more.

You'd figure if we are to acquire Dang-ers that we will need to give up someone, and it'll be a shock to that someone.
