Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

AFL Betting hypocrisy

Well as unbelievable as it is that there could possibly be another gambling scandal, maybe it's time for the AFL to have a good look at how it is managing the punter/ football interface.

I'm no wowser, I like a beer and a punt but I reckon sport betting is now far too pervasive.

Why?

My 9 yo now quotes me the odds for games and he and his mates focus on the impact on the odds of the team lists and in game injuries. They don't separate the Punt from the game.

have a look at the sponsors/ prevalence of gambling options.

Can the AFL really act surprised if they have another internal betting issue? I expect Vlad and his crew will trot out the same bulldust.... we need to take all this money from bookies because it helps us identify / manage player punting.

Yep I have a bet now and then too, whenever I do it I am the one the goes to where ever it is I bet, and check the odds. It's not hard.

Absolutely sick to death of hearing odds and this and that type bets at the end of every team sheet being read out, odds on the big screen at the G, odds everywhere you look really.

Then hearing about betting scandals and players in debt etc... well whaddaya expect...

There is a saying that I think is close to:

"if you lie down with dogs don't be surprised if you get up with fleas"

That is not it but it is close.

The sentiment is I believe correct.

I support you 100%. Even the NRL has intervened because of pervasive betting. The AFL is driven by the almighty muller, and this is a rod they have created for their own back.

If true, then Wallis is an absolute fool of the highest order. How could he have been that stupid? Sports players and officials betting on their sport is a serious problem regardless of whether it is advertised or promoted by the Code.

The AFL however should be doing all it can to prevent these issues happening then naming shaming and penalising those involved.

Nothwithstanding that I absolutely despise the TAB Sportsbet ads on the TV Footy. I hate the odds given on the scoreboard. I cant stand any reference to betting during the game. Its as positive a message as promoting smoking.

Yes, let's push live betting on the scoreboard, on TV (with more live games to come), on the radio stations, and everywhere else, then come down like a tonne of bricks when integrity is breached. So AFL.

But the thing I actually find most offensive about it is that it actually is making a family friendly game more M rated due to how pervasive the gambling messages are.

How stupid are you to have a bet on the team you coach, particularly after players have recently been fined/suspended? It's quite astounding.

Absolutely sick to death of hearing odds and this and that type bets at the end of every team sheet being read out, odds on the big screen at the G, odds everywhere you look really.

As an aside, from next year the MCG won't have any odds on the scoreboard. They're taking some principled stand.

Yes, let's push live betting on the scoreboard, on TV (with more live games to come), on the radio stations, and everywhere else, then come down like a tonne of bricks when integrity is breached. So AFL.

I don't think the two approaches are logically inconsistent. The AFL is saying to people not working in the involved organisations 'sure, have a bet', but saying to people in the industry 'it's not on for you'. How is that a confused message? You're at best an idiot for betting on footy when you're a player/Coach, and at worst you're delberately taking advantage of privileged information.

I dont think that is the case from the end of this year. So you might want to check that rant.

But i agree I hate the gambling messages. I hate all advertising at half time and the breaks. So loud you cant converse with friends.

Same thing happens on commercial television.....

They play the advertisements at a higher volume to the show itself thus they are much louder and have more impact.

And when you turn them down, you have to turn it up again for the program, which is soft by comparison.

Ok this isn't just for betting ads (although there are enough of them), but the annoyance factor still holds!!!

I always knew dean Wallis had no brains. What an idiot. Did he learn nothing from the Heath Shaw incident. I hope he gets sacked or suspended for a very long time. He should just get suspended for being so stupid. So he has aid he put the bet on behalf of a friend. That just makes it even funnier.

So funny its essendon.

Probably go the Craig Thomson plea, but if true, sharp as a bowling ball with looks to match.

I bear no ill will against Dean Wallis for belting Brad Green in the windpipe and putting him out early in the 2000 Grand Final but what an absolute idiot he is if he actually placed bets on the football.

All we need now is to see Brad star on Sunday against the Power and I will feel instant karma!

What they need to do:

- Remove any betting activities being broadcast at games. MCG is doing this, AFL need to make sure Collo does at Darklands too.

- Prevent clubs from receiving new sponsorships from gambling organisations. Contracts which have already been entered into are to be honoured, but no club is to enter into a new contract.

- Remove odds from the AFL website during matches.

- Discourage the media from broadcasting any betting odds on TV/radio both within, say, half an hour of game start (the point the AFL takes over the coverage on the web) as well as throughout and after the game.

Course, I'm probably dreaming aren't I?

I'm still for the 'exotic' bets (eg first goal) to be done through the agencies, simply because at least then it can be tracked.

Punt.... yes

Do it in an organised manner....yes

Frame a market on every freaking thing every minute of every game .....and ram the odds out ...... time for a change

Deestroy All sums it up for me......when I want a punt.... I know where I need to go to check the market and place the bet.... leave the information there.

....and if the AFL want to tidy up the problems with those directly involved going the punt, don't worry aboutt the soft soap approach of "we work with the betting companies to help police it".....just arc up the punishment to the point where even the most clueless won't go there...after a spate of issues, just ban the next bloke betting on games for life ..... a la Pete Rose in Major League Baseball (see here Pete Rose)

and now this.....huge-bet-on-suns-defender-to-kick-first-goal...

Sheer genius ......odds come in from 101 to 21 on a defender to kick the first goal and the AFL's highly sophisticated team of integrity professionals think there could be something in it? FMD

Out of control......

Let's see what happens now that there is actually a plunge that has paid out.

AFL betting policies are so far in the hole, the punt and quoting odds is so deeply bound into every minute of every game that we will move from having a sport run by TV to one run by the betting agencies.

Time to end a career here somewhere.... see if the message gets through.

And start to back this great game away from the brink.

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh

It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
