As I mentioned in the compensation thread, our pick which follows the club's first round selection in the draft, is worth far more to a team projected to be at the bottom of the table (GWS, GC) than it might be to us at face value. I believe we are right in the discussion to sign O’Meara, and we may not have to trade both Tompensation picks to get him.

O'Meara would likely be pick 1 or 2 next year. I'm talking about the effective worth of the trade.

I'd use them both plus extra (pick 12 &/or a player) to get both U/17 picks, if we can (assuming GWS will trade 2).

You'd get first grab at 2 players that would go top 10, maybe both top 5, them being a big part of what makes it a "super draft".

You wouldn't get to play them until 2013, but it's the same with any kid you draft in the 2012 draft, but you don't get gauranteed access to the ones you want.

Most of them make up what will be the likely top 10 - Grundy, Vlastuin, Crouch, Stringer, O'Meara, Garlett...

Ah, finally, thats how I understand it as well.

It would surely have to be taken after our natural Rnd 1selection (ladder position) of 2012. It wouldn't improve in value according to who holds the Deed.

Ha, there is no way we could land 2 picks in the mini draft is there? You would just about have to sell your soul to achieve this. If it were possible, ie couple a compensation pick + experienced out of favour player such as a Warnock/Bate/etc, and then downgrade some later round picks to GWS, then i'd be all for it.

Imagine getting O'Meara, Crouch and Viney coming in all in the same year. Simply wouldn't be possible. If we were able to achieve this, then i would definitely be going for Todd Elton in this years draft (that's if our pick hasn't been involved in some sought of trade to get another pick in the mini draft).

Not that i am disagreeing but i havnt been able to find any such articles, and am not on Twitter to see EQ, any chance of a link? as i have heard both from different sources

On another note, what if GWS only trade 2 this year, and hear is my epiphany...

In essence leaving ourselves with the only compensation/draft picks of true value to GWS at this point in time

Fair enough, thanks for clarifying. I do note now that the AFL release does specify the pick after Melbourne's in the first round.

Only one player talked about so far who's eligible for the 2012 mini draft and that's Jack Martin from WA. Sounds like a terrific prospect who can play key forward and on ball. Apparently had a good carnival at the U/16 National Champs. A couple of articles on him here:

That's interesting. If we offer to trade our first round comp pick (as opposed to our mid 1st round) to GWS for one of the 17y/o's a big part of GWS's consideration will be where we are likely to finish on the ladder next season. I'm guessing lots of people will be tipping us to have another poor year (perhaps even worse). This sort of forecast might help our chance to trade.

We trade the comp pick, have a West Coast like turn around, finish 4th and GWS get screwed over. Perhaps that's what Gary Lyon was refering to when he said they should watch out!

Spot on, and that really clarifies it for me Bob.

I'd say from GWS's point of view, we really would be an attractive proposition too. We were very erratic in 2011 and form was very poor with a young side. They would see us as finishing perhaps bottom 5 based on 2011, in 2012. So these compo picks (correct me if I'm wrong) that fall after where we finish - would have to be attractive. And maybe a mature body sweetener if need be (which GC lack).

The former would appear far better, the latter may not achieve the highest price. The article talks of a "bidding war" so it seems like it will be an an open auction at least.

Surely that means that if a club wants to trade a player or player as part of the tender to GWS and the club misses out, the player cannot then be traded to anyone else?

I believe that it is like trading for a pick. You can make a bid for pick 1, or you can make a bid for pick 2.

That's how I believe it works.

The AFL site has a story about GCS wanting to trade pick 4 for a senior player as they are seeking mature bodies not more kids.

With the pick 4 being considered a threat to any bid we may have for O'Meara this may bode well for us if we are interested.

Of course it could still be used in a 3 way deal but it indicates that GCS may not be interested in him so we would not have to bid against them.

If pick 4 is not in the market for him than our compo pick gains more value.

Then again GWS may also want mature bodies and not more picks.

What's this "tender process" and where has that come from? I can't find a reference to it and would be pleased to see one - I have heard about it on the grapevine but that's all.

It's not clear that the GWS zone incentive trading is at the END of the trade period from that info - it could be an integral part of it and that would make sense. The u17 mini draft picks are just other tradable commodities.

That the actual picks are a week later is OK, gives time for the dust to settle, the bid winners to work out exactly who they'll take and the AFL to have another media event in October to squash racing, cricket, soccer and any other competotor off the back page of the Sun.
