With the news on Roughie, reminds me of sitting in the first tier on the wing for the Melbourne-Richmond game where you could hear Nathan Brown's leg crack. Gotta wonder whether players ever come back the same from that sort of injury.

His achilles went.

Nothing at all like Nathan Brown's broken leg.

Very strange comparison.

Yeah some of them are just nasty.

It wasn't as bad as Brown's, but I remember hearing Steven King's leg smack into Jeff White's face in the final of 2005. It's a creepy thing to hear when you're in the stands.

12-18months out of the game is as bad as, if not worse really, than Brown's leg break.

Achilles takes forever to heal. Especially if you want it to stand up to a game like Aussie Rules. Even with the best doctors, this is probably a longer layoff than an ACL. Very harsh on the big guy, especially since it popped in such an innocuous way. Not even in a contest.

Well if it's only 3 or 4 months I wouldn't think his Achilles tendon is ruptured ( that would be the season surely?) - but that is what it looked like.

Or maybe it's a torn calf muscle.

12 to 16 weeks is the season... Hawks Medico just confirmed it is a ruptured Achilles. You are right though I expect it to take a lot longer that 12 to 16 to heal properly.

I think 3 to 4 months was said after the game.

and matthew lloyd said it, but i think robbo did something similar and was out for about 12 months?

with the recovery and technology as it is nowdays roughie will be back, but it will be a lengthy process, and i definitely feel for the bloke.

Achilles means he is definitely out for the season. Should be right for the start of next year though.

Still can hear the collective groan to this day, when Ox went down for the third time.

Did he ever play as well again. No,the knees cost him and MFC dearly.

Wonder if him moving into the ruck and having to leap and run more has anything to do with it?

Shows just how crucial player management is, but saying that it is most probably just a freak event!

Poor guy

Poor guy

Easy to say in hindsight, but i did wonder whether he should play in the Ruck for long periods of time. You wonder whether the leg muscles are ready for that position.

It is such a specialized position.

Too late now. It's done.

Yeah, I was about to post that.

As much as I hate Hawthorn, I don't mind Roughie. Hope the poor bloke is able to come back and be his best. Going to be a long lay-off.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
