2009 AFL Draft

This is a topic that's been raised a lot over the last couple of years, the whole Scully, Trengove, Martin, Morabito nexus... which now has Fyfe added to it.

It's an interesting topic, and the reason I raise it is to acknowledge that even the parochial nitwits on Bigfooty have started to talk about the 2009 draft as something that will be up there with the 2001 Judd/Ball/Hodge draft as a superdraft.

In all drafts you get guys that come on very quickly, but most show hints of how good they're going to be. It's pretty rare, I reckon, that so many of these names have not only popped up and played good footy, but that they've done it as consistently and with as much damage as they have. The obvious highlights:

Scully, Trengove, Martin, Gysberts, Tapscott, Fyfe, Jetta... All these guys are corkers who've had games in which they've shown very real and scary aspects that have caused opposition fans to groan, knowing what's coming in a few years. What I can't believe is that 4 of those seven names belong to us. Not only that, but we took a Gawn and Fitzpatrick later in the draft too... this could be the best year this club has EVER had in recruiting terms. I have zero concerns over the 4 demon names mentioned above... all four are DEFINITELY players.

Which is to say nothing of these names, many of which are the real deal, just haven't had injury luck or lots of game time:

Morabito, Rohan, Melksham, Pittard, Menzel, Duncan, Winmar, Vardy, Gawn, Roberton, Nason. All these names have already popped up, in various sizes.

Pretty amazing really, that Martin, Scully and Trengove can be the 1-2-3 punch like Ball, Judd and Hodge were. And that a star like Fyfe is right up there with them.

What do people think? Does their value seem greater because it was a mid-heavy draft and they've come on quicker than, say, a Butcher who will take a few more years?

Going by the above bigfooty thread, the general consensus is that EVERYONE rates these guys and can't separate them. Personally I could look at that list down to #18 all day and not get bored. It really is 4 from 4, which just about NEVER happens.

History shows that of the top 20 around 5 will be busts. Interesting to see who falls in that category.

I wouldn't think many in the top 20 will bust. Like DD said, the top 20 so far have been really good.

2008 draft looks better IMO, better spread of talent across different positions, most considered it a super draft before anyone had even played. That said the 2009 draft looks good, top 4 (Fyfe-Martin-Scully-Trengove) look to be extremely promising, rest are a little bit behind. We definitely killed this draft, although it helps when you have pick 1 and 2 as well as 4 in the top 18.

Scully - picked every week if not injured.

Trenners - has only missed 4 games, 3 suspended, 1 rested

Martin - Scintillating to watch

Moriabito - He was the first mid I picked for my SC team this year, then he bloody well got injured. Sensational when on, terrible about the knee though.

Cunnington - Plays week-in, week out for North, hasn't had a massive game though.

Rohan - Been sensational this year as sub, didn't play much last year I believe.

Sheppard - plays regularly for WC, don't know too much about him tbh apart from 20 of a possible 33 played.

Butcher - Hasn't played yet, highly rated KPP though

Moore - hasn't played yet, versatile KPF/mid. Probably bulking

Melksham - the Dons supporters love him, I don't rate him THAT highly but haven't watched him play that much

Gys - Who doesn't love the Gys? Right now we have done really well to get him at 11 but time will tell

Lucas - plays a bit, my Carlton-loving mates are very 'eh' about him

Talia - Hasn't played yet, may evolve into a Stef Martin type

Jetta - Plays week-in, week-out in Sydney

Howard - Debuted Rd10 this year for Dogs, solid so far

Pittard - Debuted this year, playing a lot but don't watch much Port

Menzel - Has set the world on fire down the highway

Tapscott - We need to put him on a HFF so he can roost it from 60

Griffiths - Not playing atm, not really sure how he's travelling. Has played 5 games so far.

Fyfe - Looks like he's played 100 games already.

As compared to...

Watts - We're waiting for the breakout

Naitnui - Stalled somewhat

Hill - great so far

Hartlett - rubbish imo

Hurley - Still not sure whether he has plateaued yet

Yarran - Deadly

Rich - Was best of this draft in '09, not really sure now

Ziebell - Doesn't work hard enough, potential is there though

Davis - Not a Crows regular

Sidebottom - Plays well in the best side in the comp

Johnston - only debuted this year

Lynch - only played one game, none this year

Cordy - hasn't played yet, bulking

Brown - hasn't played, bulking, may never now that Vardy has come through?

Schoenmakers - dangerous, dangerous player

Blease - Will play this year, still unsure about him IMO

Shuey - been superb so far

Strauss - Will keep improving with experience

Swift - They love him out west

It's still probably too soon to call, but noticeably there seem to be a couple of clear busts in the 2008 Top 20 (Lynch, possibly Davis) where there are none in the 2009 Top 20. Furthermore, a big chunk of it is about how the two drafts compare in their spread - there are more KPPs in the 08 draft. It was also a different sort of draft, with the first 7 being dangerous, then of the rest only picks 12, 16, 18 and 20 playing serious game time.

Give it another 4-5 years and it'll be clearer, but right now in my mind the 09 draft is the superior.

Agree 100% Striker my only disagreement is I think you're overrating a few 2009 and underrating a few 2008s.

Phil Davis plays every week for Adelaide and is probably one of the few to beat Buddy this year..

Admittedly I'm not that good on the interstaters bar Hartlett, so take my opinions with a grain of salt on them. (Although I do note that Davis didn't play today?)

IMO 2008 will go down as one of the greats. Even if you look pick 20-30, there are some beauties.

Davies is one of the more promising KPD. Hartlett is a jet. Needs help. Not flakes like Danyle Pearce and Salopek. Boak and Hartlett are good youngsters to build around.

Niknat is travelling just fine too. Hurley looks a fine player.

Scully, Trengove, Martin, Fyfe look a beaut quartet but keep in mind 08 has many KPP in that draft and the depth there is amazing.

Not going to hard but i differ in opinion on a couple of players

Mainly thinking that Hartlett is the goods

davis is injured at the moment but is going to be a ten year back for the crows, was huge late last year

Yarren is all hype if you ask me, can play but isnt incredible imo, feel free to differ

Shoenmakers, should be pretty good but i think he hasnt developed a whole lot atm

Also Brown from Geelong is killing the VFL i believe a few big bags

But really great write ups striker in general and i agree the 2009 draft will be huge.... 08 wont be bad though alot of talent in both

im pretty certain davis did his shoulder after playing round 1 and is out for the season!

and he was playing and beating franklin, he is going to be a top notch defender, and would be playing if he wasnt injured

phil davis did an injury earlier this yr (forgot what type of injury it was)that has put him out for the year, and i don't mind hamish hartlett as a player, just injury prone

yeh and good effort on going through it all, none the less both drafts will have some aswesome players, and i think we have done pretty well out of them.
