Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

GC and GWS only have 1 first round pick? Correct me if I'm wrong, because I'm pretty sure I am but why would they take him away from us when they could be missing out on a much better player in terms of what the club needs! Baffles me this bidding, its all foxing, plain and simply foxing

I hope they do. It effectively elevates us in the draft & we'll end up one day down the track getting JV back home. Do it Sheeds.

If there is better at 3/4 and there is, we should take them, its plain and simple.

No it's not. Best player in the 2000 draft, and taken at 1 ... Riewoldt. Best player from that draft going round today - Scott Thompson. Taken (by us actually) at 16.

The draft is not some kind of cast-in-stone predictor of young players' futures. It isn't. If it was, there'd be no point having a rookie draft, they'd all be complete duds, and doomed to stay that way.

Don't know if you watched Collingwood take apart Freeo. Dane Swan. 43 disposals (count them). Taken 58. Dayne Beams. 32 disposals. Taken 29. Next best, Jarryd Blair - also 32 disposals. Taken at 29 in the rookie draft, then redrafted in 2010 at number 91 as a promoted rookie. Next best, Wellingham with 29 disposals ... taken at number 10. In the 2006 Rookie draft. Swapping camps, top possession getter for Freeo was Barlow - 37 disposals. Also taken at pick 10, and also in the Rookie draft.

So, top 5 possession getters in that game ... highest of them was pick 29, while 3 of them were completely passed over for the draft and taken as Rookies.

If we take him at 3 there will be speculation that we caved under pressure from other teams and we just took him at 3 even though there may have been a better player at 3. If another club takes him there will be a lot more speculation that we look stupid and can't even pick up a father son who's father works at the club as well. If we get Jack with a second round pick then it's all gravy baby but if we can't I say just get him! If he is a top ten draft pick just get him!

What I want to know is whether it is absolutely iron-clad that if GWS bid for JV first round and we say we'd take someone else first round and JV second round, that it's then compulsory for GWS to take him with their first pick? Is there any wriggle room at all for the AFL to allow GWS to bid for him, then take someone else with their first round and then JV with their second round pick?

Is there any risk at all that Vlad could wave it through retrospectively as another "stroke of genius"? Or is that a bridge too far even for Vlad?

Has it ever happened before that a FS pick has been successfully "outbid" by another club?

If they bid with Pick 1, and we don't 'match with Pick 3, 4, 5, or whatever our first pick is - they must take him with pick 1.

Has it ever happened before that a FS pick has been successfully "outbid" by another club?

Not that I can remember.

St Kilda made the Bulldogs pay with Pick 14 for Ayce Cordy.

I don't think there have been too many clubs that are willing to eff around with the very talented son of a great, as many want us to do.

"Oh, but rpfc, it will be a sign of weakness if we take him at 3!!"

Oh, heavens, by all means let pride dictate our recruiting philosophy...

"Other clubs are dictating to us! We will look pathetic if we take him at 3!"

Really? They think we are weak because we have first dibs on the 'hardest' player in a generation? You don't think that these clubs are just trying to make sure we don't get a ludicrous discount on a prodigious talent by being able to take him at 25 in a draft we have 3 picks in the top 13?

Correct me if I am wrong? Isn't Gold Coast eligible for priority draft picks if they get less than 5 wins.

I'm fairly certain a formula for priority picks have been done away with, however the AFL can allocate them as they see fit... this worries me with Gold Coast, if they don't improve we could very well see them with picks 1 and 2 and that kisses any chance of Viney to the 2nd round goodbye. With the access of 1st round draft picks GWS had and they way they went about building their list re out of contract signings, their position on the ladder shouldn't be surprising and in my opinion shouldn't be worthy of being awarded more picks by the AFL, however nothing would surprise me.

I suppose it's possible, though giving them compo picks so soon after all their priority picks and not allowing them time to develop their existing young players would be a bit rich.

Still it is the afl's love franchise so who knows

However IF they did get compo picks there is no reason to believe they have to be picks prior to the first round. They could be early picks, mid round or end round etc

I tend to think there won't be any new special picks for GCS (or GWS) this drafting period

True, and I agree that there probably won't be any picks awarded to GC or GWS. However, who knows what the AFL will do.

I would imagine too they're would be a massive outcry from all 16 clubs if either GC or GWS were awarded early priority picks.

Anyway there is a lot of time for this all to play out so not point stressing over it now I guess.

I reckon from limited speculation and articles I have seen that Melb FC has had serious contact with Jack and they know what is going on.

There have been what appears to be a close relationship. Todd is involved in the selection process and knows the attributes required by both club and prospective players.

I would rather we honour our displayed attraction for Jack He has played for us and trained with our squad whatever machinations GWS etc get up to,

In a game of bluff they do really hold the cards as they can bluff and get our favoured son option. We lose.

WE respond to their bluff and we retain our integrity for future bargaining WE win and win again.

Drafting levels ultimately come down to how desperatley you want a specific type and you have shown enough of how imperfect it is.

Get Jack who has a passion for our club and we may multiply the impact not only with him but with all players current and future.

I think it is part of developing the culture that we need

Interesting post. We seem to have done better with our later picks as well. Maybe we should pass on our first couple of picks and only use the later ones. In fact we could have multiple ones in a row at the end of the draft when everyone else has finished.

PS. Not trying to be smart. Just amusing myself after hearing that Jones and Jamar are out today. Perhaps we should have played Petterd so that Lions and Suns could have a good look at all our Queensland boys ( Bail, Spencer and Petterd ).

You mean like Essendon will get taking Joe Daniher for around pick 20. I think I have read that Joe is a better player than Jack and yet the only club and player getting written about " again" is us and our F/S prospect. Why would that be? Not one bloody article saying how lucky the Bombers will be to get a star at 20.

Just go hard Melbourne and act with integrity, which means we let everyone know that we will do what's best for the club, not the individual and it should all work out fine.

You are probably correct that we would respond to their bluff. The trick is to get them not to try. There are many ways available to get that to occur.

I don't mean to sound like a [censored] but a quick google search brought up these articles... I think we're just a sensitive lot after the whole Scully drama and we melbourne fans seem to have a bit of a persecution complex going on.

Joe Daniher fires for Calder Cannons to excite Essendon fans

"ESSENDON-bound Joe Daniher showed why he could warrant No. 1 draft pick status if he was on the open market, kicking seven goals in just his second game in 18 months."

Bombers bargain for Calder Cannons Daniher

Essendon draft delight looms in Joe Daniher

Future Essendon star Joe Daniher exciting Vic Metro coach

"For me, and I haven’t seen a lot of (touted No. 1 pick Lachie) Whitfield, but he’s in the top one or two or three, easy. Essendon are going to do all right getting him at pick 15 or 16 or whatever."

Future Dons Joe Daniher highly rated

Daniher getting taller and stronger

I now feel extremely dirty for posting positive essendon related news on our board

Not sure about details, but I think the Dorks wanted Curren Jnr but didn't want to bid a F/S, thinking they would get him late in the draft. The Roos, however, picked him up earlier. Someone here may know more on this.

Also, it will be interesting to see where the Filth see Craig Stewart's son going in this coming draft. They may or may not go for F/S.

Can prove to be a bit of a gamble.

Does anyone wonder that rushing our draftees into the team has a detrimental effect, compounded by the expectations on these kids by Us,,, & by themselves???

Maybe it has nothing to do with our early picks missing, but that we don't slow cook them.

Playing raw eggs in the heat of the AFL, isn't going to be a happy outcome...

GWS have already stated they will definately be bidding for Viney.

I dont think he is in the best 2, but they are bidding, its on record.

Means nothing, It's July.

I would give up pick 3 for anyone who makes our midfield in any way, shape or form, better.

Daniel Rich casually bombing the ball 70m without an opponent today made me blow an artery!

Daniel Rich was considered to have the best boot as a draftee - since Luke Hodge!

Rich is a brilliant kick, a real asset.

Oddly enough, Rich was supposed to have a 'low ceiling' just like Viney is being accused of...

Must be a bloody good ceiling.

I just effen hate it when people just dismiss the talents of teenage footballers based on their own pre-conceived notions about how that player 'should' develop.

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

    OOZEE by The Oracle

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
