embarrassingly sour about the scully departure. Scully was as hard as nails. just because he is gone now people try and pay him out

Yeah I agree. Scully never shirked, always went for the hard ball. I remember him frequently backing into packs to mark or spoil, wearing hits from players double his size. Those questioning his attack on the football are just ignorant.

In saying that, Viney will be tougher. He just has one of those mindsets, similiar to Mitch Robinson.

Pleases never ever compare that [censored] robinson to any melbourne player ever again. Thanks.

Hahaha I hate him as well mate, but you can't question his attack on the ball, and I think Jack has a bit of that in him.

Does Viney have similarities with Joel Selwood? Will he play seniors in his frist season?

Selwood had the luxury of having an elite midfield right from the start which I have no doubt ensured a far quicker development. It's a shame that Viney wont be stepping in to something similar straight away, but may only take a couple of years to get there.

If Jack V can attack and extract the ball like Kerr was doing against the Blues we'll be a far better team for it.

Neeld will be absolutely licking his lips waiting for Viney to get onto our senior list. Viney Jnr is a no-nonsense tough, physical, uncompromising, take no prisoners type of player that Neeld will have lead this team out of the 50 year darkness.

TAC CUp Under 18 grand final on Sunday @ etihad:

Oakleigh v Sandy

Our Jack named ruck rover, the other one of interest for us Dee's Seb Gotch (son of Casey coach Brad Gotch) in forward pocket both for Oakleigh.... Go the Chargers!!

Good on him. U/18 Grand Final and another year in the U/18's next year. IQ is getting a workout this weekend.

HT-This may actually be his last year in the Under 18's.As you rightly state he qualifies but talking to Kelly O'Donnell last week he may actually play for Casey next year. if they decide to and gain special permission to do so.

You saying the game is televised somewhere? I have had a look and cant find it. Can anyone let me know if it is on

. Bohdan told me that Todd specifically asked him to watch Jack in his games this year and his first comment was, "he will never last in AFL football unless he works very hard on changing his running style". I've never heard of this before but apparently it is very common in young players.

I dont know if this has been answered but you could substitute the name Jack Viney with Cyril Rioli. There was piece on TV that was all about the problems of Cyril and his soft tissue injuries and how they are completely reprogramming his running style. I found the program a fascinating insight into how far sports science has come that they can completely re-educating a players running style.

So when you say "he will have to work hard on changing his running style" it will mean that if it is indeed a problem, he will get a program and training to alter his problems.

What fascinated me about this whole subject and the short doco on Rioli is, if they can go to the level they have to reprogram a running style with Rioli I cant understand why they cannot take a Reiwoldt and reprogram his kicking ? He still looks so un-co when he kicks - surely sports science can tackle this fundamental and fix it.

5 year deal? I understand he will be good, but given we announced him earlier this season, isn't it effectively a 7 year deal? What if he does a knee tomorrow then another knee upon his return?

Also, I wonder if we are paying him now, front ending his contract to avoid salary cap issues

He must be THAT GOOD. A 5 year deal is unheard of, unless of course your name is Kouta and this is the 90s.

I can only assume you are joking but I've seen everything on here.

I'm waiting for the "he's as good as he's ever going to get" brigade to start to complain that we shouldn't have selected him because he's got no future growth potential.

ApoIogies if covered elsewhere:

I assume that we will be using our first draft pick next year (or one of them) on Jack given that we will have to match any other club vying for him and he's odds-on to be a first round selection?

I wondering if we could use our mid-round compensation pick if that was higher in the order ie if we have picks 8 and 10, can we use 10?

Posted

Five year deal is necessary as, within that timeframe, Demetrius is planning to introduce new teams from NZ and PNG which would be empowered to offer him a $5m a year deal we couldn't match.

Posted

I am not sure but I assume the 5 years included this year and next and then 3 after he s drafted.

We needed to lock him away so GWS couldn't use him as one of their under 17 picks or tempt him to be drafted the following year...you may recall other clubs such as the crows sniffing around to see how they could get their hands on him.

We didn't need to 'lock' him up.

I think it is just a show of faith.

The contract was agreed to before Todd was at the Dees IIRC.

The 5 years could be anything.

I doubt the author of the article even knows - they'd have been told "he's on a 5 year contract" and it goes straight in the article with no further depth of understanding.

And as far as I understand, compo picks are not succeptible to F/S bidding.

F/S bidding occurs immediately before draft week, so that the picks are allocated and you can't trade out a 1st rounder so that you get to burn a 2nd rounder instead.

I don't think compo picks would come into this equation.

It could be part of an ingenius front-loading contract scheme.

I hope.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
