Just read Mark William's review on the MFC site. It's clearly for public consumption (der!), but I thought was very gentle on some.

Agree. Publicly baking the players individually not exactly appropriate from an assistant coach, so wouldn't expect much more.

Perhaps they could get demonland up on the projector during the week for a "raw" appraisal B)

Fluff and Drivel. Reads like am 8 yo report card doesnt it... Ryan continued to turn up for class, he played well with the other boys in between naps. Ryan applied himself to the crayons and this resulted in a satisfactory rendition which the others really liked. Needs to pay a little more attention to the teacher.

Fumbles, more focus, not outstanding, needs work rate to improve, must concentrate..........translates...got smashed !

but hey...got another game under the belt,,,,,whooped de do. . Wouldnt be so bad if he wasnt describing our more seasoned players !!!!

Two things:

1) Regarding Bennell - "Jamie’s in the team to tackle and chase and he plays his role each week". Uhm, tackling and chasing should be part of every players defensive game, not be their sole role in the side?

2) Colin (the Garland variety) shouldve got more praise than he did. Garlo will be an AA defender in our premiership year.

I thought it was a good report. As said, it is inappropriate to bake players on the website. However, you could read between the lines, so I have done so!

Rohan Bail: Injured, learning, smashed

Clint Bartram: Honest

Jamie Bennell: Jamie’s in the team to tackle and chase and he isn't. No impact on the game.

Aaron Davey: Not working hard.

Lynden Dunn: Played role.

James Frawley: One more week of his current output and he will be dropped.

Colin Garland: Col was probably our best player against West Coast. He played in front and provided some great rebound off half-back.

Brad Green: Enough runs on the board to be patient.

Jack Grimes: Jack had a solid game.

Jordan Gysberts: Bad game. Not into body contact and needs to be more involved and more fluent.

Mark Jamar: Workhorse.

Nathan Jones: Starting to pay attention to team imperatives.

Liam Jurrah: No work rate.

Stef Martin: Too tentative.

Brent Moloney: Bad game.

Cale Morton: Bad form, not working defensively. (Will be dropped is how I read that, for sure).

Jared Rivers: Jared was solid, without being outstanding.

Colin Sylvia: Inconsistent and butchers the ball too often.

Luke Tapscott: Luke was solid.

Jack Trengove: Jack was good.

Jack Watts: Jack took a big step forward.

Austin Wonaeamirri: Unfit and lazy.

And what would you expect on a public website??? Really.

What gets stated on the website should be different that what is said honestly behind closed doors or at a 1 to 1.

Choko has a reasonable intuitive stab at what it means.

oh deary me RR you are the resident genius at trotting out the bleeding obvious arent you...well done mate..attaboy..add another post to your total.

To critique players in such a manner is purely a waste of bytes. What is the point of such syrupy sugar coating ? Maybe this is actually one of the problems with this club is everything is blended with honey and 100's /1000's

Maybe the clubs motto ought be 'cliche et al' All we hear are 'appropriate' words. again al lfluff Possibly like in days of old a good display in the public stocks IS whats needed to rudely awaken some of these sloths. .Amongst their own they seem to attain a form of immunity. None will cast to hard a stone just in case one comes flying back. The coach doesnt say anything to onasty just in case the reader suggests this is unwarranted temerity and maybe the author is the one to be critiqued more closely than the players etc.

I dont mind at all the way Hawthorn isnt to soft to occasionally draw its lines. I reckon we should follow suiit

but thanks again Captain Obvious

Excellent work BB You gave me a top laugh at work!!

I can just picture the MFC child minding centre!!!

These website critiques should really not be put out right now, they serve no purpose.

Write it after the next 2 weeks, then we should get a much better picture of where our list is at, as in how do they handle pressure.

i tend to agree.. what purpose do they really serve..

We know theyd be rather more scathing behind doors so why any semblance of camouflage.? Who are they writing for ?

maybe its their own punishment....now... go write 200 lines about nothing...you naughty coach you !!

The question is are they Scathing behind closed Doors?

Or is it just a little pat on the behind, with a, " dont worry youll do better next week, now go get Dean his Coffee."

On the point that truth is stranger then fiction, I have to say this couldnt possibly be fiction , because no one in their right mind could come up with an imagination that could encompass what was supposed to pass for a game of Football last week

So I am totally in agreement that nothing could be more stranger then the truth , that is of course unless it happens again this week .

I think if they really wrote on these pieces what they thought of "Player X"s second efforts, 1%ers and hardness at the contest", it'd just be cheap media fodder for the trash papers to regurgitate. Look at todays Age, a casual opinion/observation Brian Taylor made on a radio show last night becomes back-page news! Other 'journo's' are asking their twit followers what stories they should be running in the next days tabloids.

"Demons Not Going Hard Enough - Coach Slams Efforts" would be emblazoned over the back pages otherwise.

maybe it should ?

Maybe the whole sanitizing process serves nothing but to cotton wool the players from an entitled critic base...i.e Its supporters and the watching populace in general. A possibility ?

FFS people. If you don't like the way the player reviews are written, don't read them.

This constant trashing of everything the club does by some here is just pointless and tiresome. The reviews are a good initiative, generate web-site traffic (the main aim I imagine), and are an interesting if fairly innocuous read.

Praise in public, criticise in private.

Posted

The trouble with the critique is it is an exercise in futility.

Tell it like it is or dont tell it all - which means dont tell it all as I cant imagine any club being honest publicly

on player by player performance. (Honest to the extent of what is said behind closed doors - or what I hope is said behind closed doors)

I did realise some were going to find reading between the lines so hard. that's why I gave the translation for first graders. It seems that too will not suffice.

Honestly people, GET A LIFE. Firstly, it's absolutely obvious what's being said - just being said nicely. Secondly, it is absolutely inappropriate for an employer to slag off its employees so you can get off on feeling connected. Finally, it is a good initiative by the club to give us a cursory appraisal of all players.

Let's take Dustin Martin's game from last weekend as one example....And i do know it was against Brisbane & i am not saying we should have taken him....Would Dustin be playing with the same Flair and aggression at the ball if Dean Bailey and our Football Dept was coaching him, Conversely would Cale Morton be ripping it up with Damien Hardwick as coach?

Cale Morton always looks to me as if he is still playing his first game, and he has played around 50.

Both Bailey & Hardwick were coached by Sheeds, they are both smart guys....but there is an ingredient missing somewhere...is it the coaches or is it still hiding in the very fabric of our club?

Definitely the case. The club wouldn't dare tell players the truth.

Sorry for being Captain Obvious before. I was probably being subtle.

Its a worry you need to ask that question.

It might surprise you that Martin and Morton are not the same type of players even though both have their surnames starting with an M and ending in an N.

Martin is a gem of a footballer and was clicked to go from day 1 regardless of who was coaching him. He was not far behind Scully and Trengove. Martin has also joined a midfield where there is some quantum class with Deledio, Foley, Cotchin. MFC dont have that there

In respect of Morton he might be looking like he is playing his first game given he has had a severely interrupted pre season. He was poor on Sunday like a number of others. But when the rest of your midfield is getting slayed outside players like Morton are going to struggle.

But well done on your 1000th post bagging the Coach.

Excuse Me??? I am well aware that they are different footballers, that is part of the reason i am asking....I am talking about attitude and application.

Must you always be so negative Rhino!!!

It was done in the context of another slag at the coaching. Dont be so daft.

No it is your slant that i am bagging the coach Rhino, i am asking a question that goes a lot deeper than that.

Cale Morton was pick 4 in the draft, but has never looked comfortable on the paddock, i have always wondered why.

You may think it is a daft thing to ask, & if so please do not answer...i am sure there are others up for a fair discussion.

Carp. And if you dont like it get a blog.

You could have asked about question Cale Morton against Dustin Martin without pointed reference to the respective coaches.

Deep questions and fair discussion is a worthy objective for you WYL. Good luck in your journey

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
