Paul Roos was something of a phenomena at Sydney.A recently retired player with immediate respect from both fan and playing group.

He was calm and with the calm came success,this was about the time Melbourne was looking for a new coach.

As we all know success breeds imitation and we decided to go for a calm coach.We need a hard nut who has been through an era of playing success,Hardwick was a miss and Wellman a significant loss .Our defense was our clear developmental winner last year though with the departure of Wellman it has regressed.

Now Wellman is a continued success at Essendon and a confirmed success at Melbourne in the past i believe he would be the ideal candidate,outside Malthouse.to gain the best from our list.

Bailey lacks the respect of the players,they do not play for him.his selections confound me.The lack of continuity for guys such as Gysberts,Petterd etc astounds me.The continued support of nathan Jones astounds me equally,The guy does not have it,yes he can occasionally bang one from outside fifty and look great though the VFL is littered with such.his decisions on the field mimic Baileys of it.

Whoa, i'll go easy as its your ninth post but there are a few holes in your arguement. Yes I agree that wellman was exceptional with our backline last season and this season we dont seem to have the same level of performance from pour backs six partly attributed to the injury to chippa.

How do you know that bailey lacks the respect of his players??? Give us something quantifiable. To question the handling of gysberts and petterd is equally ridiculous. Both have suffered from injuries, Gysberts a back problem and Petterd a shoulder. Petterd was dropped after barely getting near it against Hawthorn.

And Jonesy, opinion is divided on him amongst supporters, I feel he is an honest battler.

we don't play until round 6. we've just finished round 4 and we are in the eight. plenty of footy still to be played. the football department is going along ok.

people should keep in mind that players like tom scully have yet to sign. that is the off-field focus for the moment.

I'd noted this also quite early on. But watching further it seems this is just the tact Roos takes when discussing any game. He looks at it as a coach would which may come out as him having some further interest. I wouldn't be against Roos at all, at the very least he instilled a great culture at Sydney and I wouldn't mind some of that rubbing off on to our boys.

But, I think it is just Roos way.

If it was 04 then he coached them to 6th, if it was 05 then a premiership win - did the ends justify the means - for the swans it did.

Did he invent the flood or merely work it better? Does this make him a one-trick pony or prove he is progressive enough to adapt masterfully with the game?

IF MFC is formulating a DB succession plan now, they would be silly not to consider Roos; assuming he is interested, which may be assuming a lot. I hear he is going to GWS with Scully. (friend of friend, very reliable source)

Roos comments on every team and is extremely diplomatic in his assessments. It's a pleasure to watch. Reading between the lines, I think what he has been trying to say is that Melbourne is in serious trouble. I have taken nothing out of it suggesting he has anything more than a commentator's interest in Melbourne.

i personally think Roos is filthy he was handed his biggest ever losing margin so late in his coaching career by us, and for that reason he enjoys analysing our game plan and trying to break it down.

Eddie will never belittle the Pies, Crawf the Hawks, Billy the Cats yet for some reason more and more, Garry seems to be asking the questions of the Dees.

I love having a powerful figure in the media but geez it seems on FC that he's as keen to question the Dees as one C.Wilson

in addition Gary Lyon should be asked to take a couple of players under his wing for one on one sessions each week, he could add a lot to the development of Morton, Watts and Grimes.

If he is not available then lets get an experienced ex player with some mojo in the role.

Have you ever thought that he may be questioning the Dees because he seriously believes we are going down the wrong path and are destined to never fulfill the immense potential of our list.

Roos questions it along similar lines, but for different reasons. He's covering himself in case a new job comes up for him whichhe likes.

Both of them in my view have been very constructive in their comments, and are not in any way being destructive. We are not beyond criticism.

If they took little notice of us because they considered us not worthy of mention, or not likely to figure in the future, then that would be more of a concern.

I saw the percentage media coverage of the various AFL clubs the othere day for so far this year and from memory I think we are coming about 5th or 6th. A lot of it driven by the Scully/GWS issue. We are starting to become a player again, and we should celebrate that.

If the Board considers that we need to change the coaching set up at the end of this year in order to further ensure future success, then we should not be afraid of that either. We need to be as ruthless with our coaches as we are with our players. We are not always.

I would prefer that this topic wasn't discussed with any fervour as at this stage I don't think we need anything to send of us the rails. I wonder if one Tom Scully would be more tempted to stay if Garry was the coach.

And I for one, would prefer that this topic wasn't discussed at this stage... particularly when no-one knows if he is even tempted to go.

i do agree his coaching style was more suited to the smaller grounds, interesting that Sydney and Wet Coke had so many close games at subiaco and the MCG though.

Both teams matched up rock solid for years.

I have no problem with Roos as a person, always caomes across as a good intelligent guy. Bat he did say he only wanted to coach the Swannettes & i couldn't handle watching a flood every week!!! like st.kilda....(But if we were winning i think we would all watch!!!

The Club made it public some months ago to players, FD and the football world that they would be doing a pre season management consultant review of all aspect of football operations. I would have thought the timing of the report would have been expected and have allowed the Club to consider and make decisions in respect of 2012 and beyond. This includes coaching.

Roos did not invent the flood.

What he did was look at his list, arrive at the conclusion that it lacked the talent to play expansive footy, resolve to lock down the match with full ground man-on-man and turn the every contest into a wrestling bout.

Circumstances favoured the Swans, too. If West Coast had a forward line to complement their stellar on-ball brigade and solid backline, the Swans would not have won any flags and we would be talking about Roos as an "almost" coach. "How good was Paul Roos to 'almost' win two premierships with his average list?" And then there was the Swans' astonishing lack of injuries.

Still, if my aunty had balls...

Eade has a greater claim to inventing the modern flood, which he introduced at Sydney in 1996 with players sweeping off half back. Even Kevin Sheedy "flooded" players back whenever Essendon's opponents got on a roll, but that was a contingency in case of emergency, not an across-the-board tactic.

Whatever the genesis, the flood or the full press or whatever you want to call modern trends, are inevitable consequences of improved fitness and plundering other codes.
