How about less talk and MORE ACTION from the coaches and players. I too am sick of hearing the same dribble from Bailey. Actions speak louder than words.

We went from getting 118 points averaged against us in in 2008 to around 89 last year...

So there is an 'action'.

Obviously not loud enough...

Thats right, its not loud enough. Needs to be allot louder in 2011.

No, it's pretty fracking loud.

You're just not listening.

I actually like the approach Bailey takes to the break down of quarters.

A young team needs to learn that 1 good quarter can be undone the following quarter if you just coast. That stat about less points conceded in 2010 is an excellent one. We improved the number of quarters that we won last year but we also cut down the number of bad quarters where even though we lost it we didn't get absolutely trounced and undo 3 quarters of good/hard work.

If it is a micro-management scheme to keep the players focused and it actually works then why not stick with it?

In 2008 our percentage was 62.61. In first halfs it was 53.

In 2009 our percentage was 74.66. In first halfs it was 75. In third quarters it was 62.58.

In 2010 our percentage was 94.52. In first halfs it was 85. In third quarters it was 131.63.

Sorry, but it's a mantra for losers.

Time for Bailey to put his cojones on the line and back his team in to win.

Clearly you have no idea what you're talking about.

Hurting my eardrums.

Cue E25 with predictable dismissal.

I only just read the tripe you've been coming out with.

I'd be embarrassed if I were you.

You are very wide of the mark.

Rfpc and dandeeman have covered it, but I'm still not sure if you get it.

That is incredibly good. Our last qtrs must be pretty awful but such an improvement in the 'Premiership Quarter' is unbelievable.

No, I get it. It's very simple. You don't hear Mick Malthouse or Alistair Clarkson waffling on about how many quarters their sides win.

The question is ... do you get my point?

Last quarter percentages

2008: 82.5

2009: 89.6

2010: 81.4

I don't think this really tells the story, though, as so many of those games in '08 and '09 were over by half time (as the other stats show).

Have you conveniently ignored the fact one of our current weaknesses, in spite of it's potential, is our midfield..?

With more kids to be introduced to it, the lack of experience will make what you demand inherently unreasonable to expect.

It may occur, but by a freak stroke of blinding luck.

More likely is that we will struggle badly at times and have a year very similar to 2010.

No, it's you who isn't even on top of his/her own point.

The term 'less talk, more action' implies a lack of action.

There has been plenty on this long road back to relevance.

You don't just dismiss it because the calendar has ticked over into a new year.

The line of "win more quarters" is great leadership by Bailey - I'm amazed people expect more.

It is a fairly simple theory, and maybe that's why so many find it hard to understand as it is way above them. We won 8 1/2 games in 2010 compared to 4 wins in 2009. What were the 3 main areas of improvement between the 2 years? We scored more than the previous year, we kept the opposition to lower scores, and we won more quarters. Those 3 key performance indcators resulted in us winning 4 1/2 more games. Imagine if we can improve on those 3 areas again this year. There is a great chance that we might win 3 or 4 more games, which, what do you know, will give us around 12 wins for the season = maybe sneaking in to 8th place.

But, we have some strange supporters amongst us that would prefer Dean Bailey to come out and say "Our target this year is to win x amount of games". What Coach does that? The arguement is that no other coaches come out and say we need to win more quarters, but I can tell you one thing, not many coaches started where Dean Bailey started either! He's stating some pretty bloody obvious things when he says it, he is setting a young, developing list some pretty achievable targets, and as they achieve these, they win more games.

The FD would know tht if we win 10% more quarters this year than last, that will give us an extra 3 or 4 wins. They would have in their minds a target of probably 12 wins, but can you imagine if they made that public, and with 4 rounds to go we only had 8 wins on the board, who would the pressure be on? Bailey? Of course. The playing group? Of course. Would you really want Mike Sheehan and all his other vulture mates glaring down on our young guys saying "they failed because they didn't win 12 games"?

Don't forget to listen to our President. We are only at the "In the Game" stage of the journey. Sadly, a lot of you on here have us at the next level. I'm 31 in 2 weeks, I have been patient, frustrated at times, but bloody patient. My father saw the 1964 flag. He has some pretty ordinary health issues at the moment, and would dearly love to watch a Demons flag with me, considering it was his fault that I have red and blue blood, but he knows this year wont be it, but it's getting bloody close. If you haven't got patience, the Club doesn't need supporters like you, so pi$$ off to Carlton or someone else (thanks Beamer for the appropriate way to say that!). The current FD/Administration Team have done everything they possibly can to win multiple flags in the coming years, with one of the most exciting lists I've seen, now it all needs to fall in to place through state of the art development (tick - see AAMI Park facilities), an improving playing list (tick - see KPI's that Bailey knew we had to improve in to win more games), a financially stable Club (tick - debt free).

I made a comment in a different thread that people need to realise. Currently, I would rate us betwen the 8th-12th best team in the league. If we win more quarters, we will probably be the 8th best team this season. when we can sit down and look each other in the eye and honestly say that we are in the top 4 best clubs in the league, that's when myu expectation levels will be a lot higher than what they currently are.

Bring on Round 1. If we get belted by the Swans, I'll happily provide some razor blades for "those" supporters that will need them.

Wise words Billy.....Please keep this Essay somewhere close so we can all re read it at certain times...

Let us not forget it was only this last summer that we finally moved into a training facility that we can call our own...after 152 years.

Billy, well said, I can remember 64 was only 14, seen many more losses than wins since,

Seen the two finals and dont want to lose by a record margin again, If we have to build slowly to achieve a win over Essendun or Hawthorn

I for one will gladly build slowly and enjoy the experience. Satisfaction and revenge are both best tasted cold or at least cool.

There is much to recommend the old Joke about the Young bull and the old bull, there does seem to be far too many young bulls on this site happy to take the quick fix

and not take the time to "smell the roses" on the way to fixing up the whole competition, Go Dees !

Have your opinion, be as condescending as you like, but give the whole "we don't need supporters like you" carp a rest. Most on here have been through the thick and the mostly thin of it - just like you.

It'd be very dull around here indeed if every post was a back-slap and a high five for every single thing Dean Bailey says and does. There's faith and then there's blind faith. To me, your post edges well towards the latter.

That's my opinion. Suck it up. We're all entitled to one.

True. And I've got to say I agree with you Range Rover, and also think that a lot of the posters who have had a go at you have missed your point.

No one is saying that winning more quarters is a bad thing, or that winning more quarters doesn't make it statistically more likely you'll win more games. What Range Rover (I believe) is saying is simply that won quarters are a fairly obscure and potentially deceptive statistic, so are not something a coach should be priding their self on or focusing on for an upcoming season. Kind of like if Bailey came out and said his aim for the year was to kick more goals from outside 50 towards the punt rd end of the MCG - sure, that will help, but it's surely not what we're about as a club.

I'll also note that the other AFL coach who seems most keen on discussing won quarters is Damien Hardwick. Draw whatever conclusions you want from that.

Posted

When you are coming off a low base you have to aim at something realistic. Winning quarters is realistic and achievable. That phase though while still relevant should now have moved into other meaningful stats like I50 differentials and efficiency, rebounds, time in fwd50 etc. I am sure the club looks at all those acutely but the public face is quarters won. KISS.

It's not 'kind of like that' at all. What a ridiculous equivalency.

And we get the point - we don't think it is a good one.
