Right now our best 22 would be around the 66-68 game mark, and I left out a few kids who could have been considered in flag team.

So we are at least 3 years away from that. 4 or 5 if you believe Green, Moloney, Rivers, MacDonald and Jones aren't going to be there.

Dont disagree with what he way saying, but my word people over analyse stats and figures these days...

another article on MFC.com.au which didnt really tell us anything we didnt allready know. The worst feature is that "chat with Matt" they had last year after team selection - his responses to questions were basically good for nothing. Ie. Q: How far away is Tapscott A: Dont really know, but i hear they are taking a conservative approach with his injury. That chat set up would be alot more interesting if it was one of the coaches taking part

Yes and I agree with everything you say.

But I do think it is worth pointing out that it is "flag winning" age -- our youth doesn't preclude us from playing finals or contending for top 4 (even if I do think it is a stretch).

The sky is the limit.

Always good to temper expectations though.

Tim has made an interesting point regarding the average number of games per player that the premiership teams of the past 10 years have had.

The average appears to be 107, Collingwood average last year was 101.

At the end of the home and away season this year the approx. average for the MFC will be 90 if we are able to keep our best players on the park.

So that indicates that we could be in our premiership window from next year if we can keep our best team together.

No, I believe we have some heartbreak to come before the flag but I am just relaying the thinking of our list manager when he presents the board with his expectations - we are not in our window he would say.

Yeah, I also agree with that, but I'm in denial.

If I'm honest with myself, some quality experience has been lost and there are more kids to come into the side that haven't even played 1 game yet, let alone 20.

There will be times when we struggle.

But I'm more than ok with that.

Could just see if Michael Tuck senior is wanting to come out of retirement, His 400 odd games would go nicely for the team averages of games played....

I wouldn't expect we would contend for another 2-3 seasons, but I would expect some consistent finals appearances starting from this season.

Some of us have been saying this on these boards as far back as two years ago. 2014...

You just have to look at our midfield in terms of experience (not including Moloney, Sylvia) and the fact that we have the youngest list next to the Suns - should speak volumes; as well as the need for some to temper expectations for those on the frog march for finals in 2011 around here. Friday as well as the practise game against Brisbane may have done some of that.

We have the same basic mantra being pumped out each year ....nothing new. Our window is years such and such to such and such. WHAT WE ARE NOT HEARING is of the dozen other teams that see those years as their window years. A couple of teams will win over those five years and another 10 will have moved past looking for new windows to sit and gaze through into the never-never ether. All these statistics are the lowest common denominator of winning teams. Much of it is equally shared by losing teams. I'M STILL TO HEAR SOMETHING THAT CONVINCES ME.

It seems like you're trying to infer something from the stats that simply isn't there. No one suggests that when your teams is at X games p/player and so forth you win a flag, they suggest that when your team is at X games p/player and so forth you have an opportunity to do so.

If you're waiting to hear something that convinces you we're going to be winning the flag in X year you'll be waiting a long time. Four years ago I didn't hear that Collingwood was going to win the flag in 2010, and seven years ago I wasn't convinced Geelong were going to three-peat, etc.

Why do we get these sorts of articles?

First, it's [sadly] important that the Club manages supporter expectations.

Second, the footy world would be fairly boring if everyone dealt in the here and now.

Some on here have unthinkingly managed to expect this club to go 3rd last, last, last, 12th, 7th-ish, top 4 and fighting for the flag in 2012...

If I wasn't aware of this I wouldn't be suggesting the Club needs to manage supporter expectations!

The vast majority here are going to be very disappointed as the season unfolds.

Probably - expectations are overblown, but the preseason seems to have tempered that somewhat.

My 'unthinking' comment was directed at those that expect more than they can deliver, sooner than is possible.

Great article, i still cant help but get excited and hope for the best but it all makes sense...
