I've been told due to sub par form during the pre season Jack Watts is probably going to be left out of the side for the season opener. I for one don't mind this, With his first real pre season under his belt I did expect a little more from him during the NAB cup/challenge. Competition in our forward line is going to be pretty fierce this year I think.

Just got back and it seems his NAB CUP form warrants selection and WILL line up on Sunday. Like I said in thread I was just passing on what I was told by the man.

Hey steamin, I'll be at the cricketers arms from midday. How about you come down and just shout us a beer with a couple of other big demon fans?

Done. I'll be wearing the new red zip up demons jacket.

I'm at the cricketers now wonabeeri looking for you.

Not only that, but it was an insipid kick from someone that was clearly afraid of being tackled - he crapped himself, hence the horrendous kick that was 200 meters in the air. Cost us a goal.

Posted

He profesionally put himself out of the way today, by leading into spots where he knew he would not get the ball.

He does not want it at the moment. He should be dropped on that performance.

Posted

Oh FFS, are we going to abuse him after every game?

It's going to be a loooooong season.

He did some good things. He NEVER got outmarked, not even when he had 2 players on him, and if he kicked 2 goals instead of 2 behinds everyone would be praising his performance.

I know it's hard to find players to pick on these days, what with Bruce, Miller and PJ gone, but seriously, we can't be picking apart inexperienced kids.

He just doesn't look like he wants it though, and he hesitates constantly. Every time he went near the ball i thought 'ugh he is going to mess with our flow going forward', and surely enough the crowd agreed with collective yelling/groaning. There were times were he was 1/1 or 1 on 2 and got his fist to the ball which was great, but the thing he did with his ball is the hand were pretty poor.

Funny, I only saw the second half but I saw him involved in damn near everything. Sadly, much of it will go unremarked because it won't appear on the stat's sheet, but he contributed in a huge way. Lots of pack crashing, spoiling, tapping the ball to teammates. That sort of thing. On several occasions he let himself get hit and tapped the ball to advantage. Once again he's had a game with low stats and huge amounts of work. Sooner or later the work will turn into 20+ possessions and a few goals.

Posted

Sadly, Jack look out of place, I feel there will be pressure for his spot. You can not hold a place in the side on reputation or potential alone.

Posted

I didn't think Watts was out of place or afraid of it or any of that rubbish.

I thought he worked his ass off, double and triple leads, ran to the right areas, created space, and positioned relatively well at marking contests.

True, he didn't impose himself on the game, but he is coming from a hell of a long way back physically and only now has a body that can allow him to reasonably contest at AFL level.

We have nothing to gain by dropping him, but the sky's the limit if we just allow him to settle into CHF.

Posted

Not our worst today. Some dodgy moments but I would still have him in the team at his current performance.

That was my impression too. Definitely not one of his better days, but I was surprised at the amount of work he did in packs. He looks like he's playing without confidence though.

Posted

He looks better, his work around the ground was good and he is making some smart football decisions and getting into the right positions. Things like when everyone else was wing side of a ball up in Sydney's fwd 50 he'd be goal side. Every game we give him is worth 2 in the 2's and there are at least 4 players id have on the block before him *cough*Addam*cough*

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the

We'll break down the Match SIM against North Melbourne and wrap up the preseason with insights into training and our latest recruits.
