I don't know about anyone else but this really bugs me. I loved Robbo as a player but think that he sometimes put his own glory before the team. In his early days he was only interested in the speccy and goals. He then matured matured and put real effort into chasing and tackling and became a really good footballer. That's what makes this so disappointing.

I may be wrong but this smacks of the churlishness of someone who was told by bailey that his time was up. I watched a replay of his last game recently and I agree with Bailey. This sort of thing is dog whistling and only seeks to destablise.

It wont distabilise the club and seems as though a story has been made out of a a little comment. Don't foget he also mentions how he expects Bailey to succeed and thinks the team will again improve this year.

Nothing in it. HS has about 127 footy journos all looking for a story. We don't know the context of the questions. Could have been an innocuous "if Dean Bailey doesn't coach next year who do you think would be a good replacement?"

Now he may be stupid for answering a journos question like that but I would say nothing malicious.

I must have blinked.

But I agree with Robbo - we would be mad not to look at Malthouse, just as Tom Scully would be mad not to look at GWS. I wonder when the people saying that Tom should sign now think we should sign Dean?

Three or four years into his career he made a marked effort to add this to his game. It didn't always come naturally and only towards the end I think he began to slacken off and revert to his 'natural' game.

Robbo came out after his retirement and accused the Dees of tanking and now he makes this comment. Answer to an innocent question or not, he must know this could have been a potential headline.

In my opinion he is not a true Melbourne F C person for doing this sort of rubbish that does not help our cause. Many of us have paid part of his wage and all he is showing now is some last self serving piece of fame.

He means as much now to the demons as Cameron Bruce. Both have shown their limited loyalty whilst sitting on substantial pay packets throughout their careers, even when their performance was not up to scratch.

At least we don’t have Bruce and Robbo to talk us up as premiership material after we win 2 games in a row.

Dont see anything wrong with it really. As if what Robbo says will rock the club...

The Herald Sun will expose Robbo for being part of Scientology next.

They are investigative journalism at his best. I hate bagging the HUN etc but gee they sink lower and lower.

What a non story this one is.

Robbo is one of many ex players this year from clubs whose current coaches come out of contract and the media (see Herald Sun) will be all over these guys to rent a quote about the potential shadow of Malthouse.

The supposition that should we not start to capitalise on our potential then Bailey is in the sights is probably quite reasonable. Don't be suaded it's Baileys make or break season. He'll be aware( acutely) of it. Personally I think he'll bring us on( and upward ) but should that not occur then the MFC will have to re-assess and consider others. You'd be mad not to consider Mickey Mouse, mad !!

There's going to be unprecedented media attention on our club I think this year. Some would like to see the cinderella story unfold , others only too happy to knife us. We've enjoyed a lot of good press and some may seek to rebalance that. There'll be more mischief as the months unfold.

I think it's a fair comment. If we didn't perform, and Malthouse was available surely we would look at him.

Absolutely correct but keep some perspective - this story is a beat up. That said, Robbo's comments are completely fair - it's time for us to show improvement

I don't think you can really accuse Robbo of not being a MFC man he loves the club and anything he says is usually taken out of context or due to his naivety.

Hypothetically if Bail is relieved, can MFC afford to pay the salary Malthouse would command?

I highly doubt that would be the case.

I'd just be happy with an actual defensive coach that has some experience in defence!

I completely agree

Our defence seems to have gone backwards since Wellman departed It is a priority to get some good coaching into our backline

Also IMO it still appears that we are not desperate enough1

I really hope that this improves as it is the one thing that doesnt or shouldnt require coaching or talent or money just indivigual desire and fierceness for the contest

Does anyone actually disagree with the following?

...in the event of a failed campaign, Robertson said the club would be silly not to sound out one of the AFL's best coaches about joining the Demons.

"If the team went backwards this year you would have to look at someone like Mick," Robertson said.

It's also worth noting that Robertson said this:

Robertson said he fully expected Dean Bailey to succeed as coach of a young Melbourne team this year.

If Micky mouse was to come on board , you'd find the money. Simple as that.

It's all supposition and hypothetical. Of course come mid season if we aren't ascending then the Fourth Estate will start circling for the kill.

I'm going to believe (ftm) that Bailey will prove the goods. But they'll be barking their stories and nipping at the heels of any faltering.

I totally agree- everyone at the club is under the microscope except the Board. The football department needs to really make sure this club continues to develop. No use having great cattle to put on the park but no guidance etc.. Bailey and several of the coaching team need to make sure they have done their job.No excuses now. And if they don't perform - out they go and bring in the best. That is what I elieve Robbo was getting at and IMO that is totally acceptable.

I agreed - up until you excluded the Board. I'm sure they'd agree.

What Robbo said in this mornings paper was absolutely correct, and i totally agree with him.

I expect Bailey to be the coach for quite a while, BUT in the event that he does not cut it and the club has a bad year (discounting serious injuries) then yes the club should look closely at a number of things, including coaches.

And yes losing Not a Wellman will hurt us in the short term.

Suspect Robbo is suffering from Irrelevance Syndrome. Still, Aker has a job on the radio !

Posted (edited)

im sure it has been noted and Ive missed it but if the Woods go back-to-Back which is an unfortunate probability, it will be nathan Buckley looking for a new venture not Malthouse.

The thing that I'm suggesting WYL,,,, Is, why Robbo felt the need, at this time of the season, the same day that we had our family day, to think & make something as obvious as a coaching & football dept', review,,, public. When we'd have a review every year prior to the end of the season anyway.

I think his comments to the Media, is more self indulgence, from Robbo.

If he wants to do this stuff, then he can, as an supporter through the social media of forums ot Twitter... actually, maybe Twitter is more appropriate for Robbo.

I'm surprised he didn't make up a ballad, to the tune of, 'The Gypsy Rover'.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
