We hopefully should be able to find 1-2 of this group of 6 that end up in our best 22 in a couple of years.

Note also that because we have only one veteran, we can nominate one of our rookies for senior selection even if we have no senior players on the Long Term Injured list (I wish).

He did if I recall correctly. As did Tom Rockliff, who we may have had earmarked for our PSD pick before LJ surfaced.

Kinda hoped someone could come up with a 'smokey'

either local footy that some young player had been

blitzing, or a few in the VFL worth a shot.

Someone could have bragging rights if he/she

nailed 1 or 2 we rookied.

I had a couple from Casey Scorps. ie

1: Kyle Matthews (until KO'd)

2: Fieldsend

Now that our ND picks have been sorted.

My thoughts are we probably could use a tough

Back Flanker 'in and under' that can protect

the runners out of the backline.

Someone like a "delicate" Des Dickson would be most handy...He played a long time ago but he is worth looking up. Back in the days when only one field umpire looked after the whole MCG.

Des was tough to say the least, like Rod Grinter, only bigger!!!

I can't see that we would rookie Thorpe after taking 3 tall forwards in the draft. There won't be the spots available to play them @ Casey.

Irrespective of whether they are 1yr or 2yr contracts I still think you have made an interesting point Forge.

We may try to strike a balance here. You'd think that unless a rookie was absolutely terrible they would probably be given another year simply for development anyway so it means we may needlessly end up comitting to too many unlikely prospects if we go too deep. Possibly at the expence of 1 or more promising rookies the following year. We have 6 spots, I don't know if there is a minimum requirement but perhaps we may fill about 4 of those spots as a guess.

If we made a commitment to rookie Tom Mac then we are down to 5 spots. This year we are allowed to defer one rookie selection until after the NAB cup, so that leaves 4. If one of those goes on the Jamar Insurance mature bodied ruckman, there are three left.

Normally rookie lists are used for players who we want to watch developing (eg, young beanpoles who haven't learned to tie their own shoelaces yet without falling over) or real under-the-radar smokies (eg, JL, Aaron Davey). This year we have already stoked up with talls (especially if we get the insurance ruck) so it's down to the smokies.

At the end of 2011, we will either promote Newton (if he comes good) or delist him (if he doesn't). Probably the same with Tom Mac. If we think Spencer is good enough to step up for an injured Jamar in 2012, then we might delist the insurance as well. If not, they will have fullfilled their purpose by end 2012 and would go then. So there will be 2 or 3 rookie spots vacant at end 2011 even if we keep all the smokies for a second year. If one or more of the smokies are good enough to promote to the seniors (remember its another compromised draft in 2011) we may have additional spaces.

So overall I can't see there is a major problem with filling our rookie list, leaving one spot for an ends-of-Nab-Cup selection.

Some good points there GOLF, I agree on Newton, 1 way or the other his rookie spot should be freed up.

I guess for me the sticking point is how likely is the club to delist rookies after 1 year, as you say part of listing them is to keep an eye on them but development is also a factor as well.

If they are more likely to hold on to them for another year in principle then I'd take a conservative approach with the ifs and buts (not that I necessarily think your cases don't make sense).

Thanks to 'Alpha33' we know our picks in a compromised rookie draft are 14, 31, 48, 63, 76, 84. Ok so we don't use 84 and save a spot for a trainee as you pointed out. We are still going with picks up to 76. I realise we are venturing into the unknown a bit and the dynamic is not entirely the same as the national draft but still we are talking more than smokies here at 63 and 76.

Say at the end of the year we (conservatively) estimate 2 spots freed up. Newton goes and possibly a rookie is elevated. It leaves us with 2 rookie picks in next year's (uncompromised) rookie draft if the club is committed to the remaining rookies from a developmental perspective.

Again, if the club will happily let some of them go at the end of 1 yr it is a moot point.

Which pick do you think we'll use for McNamara given that we'll want to prioritise early picks for player roles ie insurance ruck?

I'd draft him last of the rookies.

He's a relatively known quantity and rookie picks are for rolls of the dice that can end up as Jordie McKenzie or as Rhys Healey.

EFL Div 2 - not a bad effort. I wonder why he doesn't play at a higher level (Div 1 or VFL). Do you know him GM? If so, does he just prefer the local club environment?

WYL : I cant really remember a lot about Hawthorns' Des Dickson , I do know he wasn't delicate.

I hadnt planned on maiming or killing any opposition players .just hit 'em hard,

A tough back flanker to break open the play for our elite runners to open up the game.

Grinter would be perfect right now (a slightly toned down version)

He;d be lucky to play 6 games in a row, the way the match review works.

With the influx of the new Fowards, probably could do with bit of vigor on the backline.

A lighty bigger version of Matty Whelan would round things off.

But no-one comes to mind atm for a rookie spot.

McNamara is not contracted so he needs to earn his place on the rookie list (unlike Meesen and Newton last year).

Can anyone really tell me where he would play and who's spot he would take? Too small to play tall and not agile enough to play on a small. He's a very good VFL footballer with no upside for mine and I can't see any reason why we'd rookie him.

And we won't offer more than a one year deal to any rookie, why should we?

I want to know this too. I said I was in favour of delisting him at the end of season and didn't get a lot of support, but my criteria for retention is pretty simple: can this player be part of our best side? I don't see whose position in the side he contending for, so he's gone. I wouldn't bother rookie listing him either.

Usually the answer was "but he showed some potential in a couple of games in 2009". Whoop-de-doo.
