Take it with a grain of salt, however heard that whilst on his trip to Melbourne last month or whenever it was that Viney committed to a deal to 2015 with Melbourne knowing that they would take him father son.

Probably not news given most people now know hes coming but anything goes on here these days so there it is.

I'd believe school. He was at carey before he went over to Adelaide so i'd be guessing they'll be giving him a scholarship to come back. Like i said its not from the horses mouth but its from someone close, who i consider to be a decent source so just hope its true. Could do with 5cms, but other than that he's just a beautiful footballer. a left foot alot like andrew gaff's whos about to be drafted. Just beauty in motion

He will play school -with the possiblity but doubtful he will play Under 18 TAC CUP matches.I gather he will go back to Carey Grammar school.

Is he 16?

MELBOURNE is eyeing talented teenager Jack Viney - the son of club champion Todd - two years before he is eligible to be drafted.

The 16-year-old is dominating club and college football in Adelaide and is fresh from a 40-possession game as a bottom-age player for North Adelaide's under-18s on the weekend.

Just to confirm... I go to Carey and have lots of mates who are really close to him. It's all over his facebook, he is coming back to live in Melbourne and will be back at Carey next year.

As I've posted before, the bloke is an absolute gun! Absolutely tears games to bits! I've heard from numerous people that he is one of the toughest, if not THE toughest player they have seen play junior footy. He's incredibly tough but fair and has a mean tackle! I would know, I've felt it!

He was also the school cross country champion...

When he was here before he was very committed to coming to melbourne, looks like things haven't changed!

Surely you mean he was Carey U15 cross country champion, find it hard to believe a year 8 kid was school champion

i dont know if im reading this wrong but the article on the herald sun superfooty site states

"gws COULD nominate him as one of their 17 yr olds next year".. surely this excludes potential f/s selections?

Viney has to agree I think. I read somewhere a club announced a player they will be taking father son a year early so GWS are unable to take them. For some reason Im thinking it was Collingwood. But Im not sure. But whoever it was it sets a precedent as for what other clubs are allowed to do in regards to father son selections.

Found the link - It was Carlton.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/blues-may-move-on-stars-son-to-thwart-gws-20100315-q9pe.html

Just means the club needs to claim them as a father son early. Risky for unknown players, but Viney we know is a gun!

yeah, cheers for that.. would defeat the purpose of the rule if gws could just snatch him.. are we able to nominate him early, then get him out playinf for casey in the vfl? similar to david swallow and the gc?

It would probably be his decision where we wants to play. I cant see why he couldn't play for Casey, but I would think he would play school footy.

i wouldn't worry about his height with Jack being 15 going 16. he will probably grow another 5 cm or more in the next 2 years anyway.

For the umpteenth time can we get it straight

He is 16, turned 16 in April this year and is currently completing year 10

Next year 2011 he can pre-nominate for F/S to avoid the GWS 17yo (Jan to April) pre-draft

In 2012 we then draft him under F/S rules

He could play TAC next two years (and for his school)

In 2012 he could play Casey as a VFL player, not an AFL player because he wouldn't be drafted until end 2012

I doubt he would play VFL in 2012, even though he would be good enough as I expect he would want a good VCE year. JMO.

Actually...why wouldnt you play VFL ?? Its men...not boys.. Its more akin to the next step

Well ideally he would, but he will be doing year 12, may be too much of a distraction / time commitment.

No need to worry about this- he played reserve footy this year and starred.Let him develop in his own age group and train with the club in his last year..that IMO.

I was more suggesting that when hes able to play VFL..that he does so. By all means play amongst his peers etc. But..and this is what might concern me is that his is just that talented that to enable him to grow his game he will need to test it against other suitbale able players. He probably wont get that after a while playing schoolboy and U18. Crikey..look at him...built like two dunnies...one on each arm. Hed eat most of his age-group for breakfast !!

Im sure the club and its new development coach ( cough !! ) will astutely guide him through this period.:)

From a purely football point of view, of course you're right

From his personal education point of view, well I don't know. VCE is a big year if you aim for top marks. Depends a lot on his academic abilities and his academic ambitions and priorities. Of which I personally know nothing. And, the decision is 2 years away.

Any of you actually seen the kid play a game of footy?

Firstly, it's a bit sick if you have.

Secondly, what shite are you talking if you haven't?

Same goes for all of the other info we get from all of you on draft prospects

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
