We have Connolly in his role of General Manager of Football. Probably pretty similar.

With the big, cashed up types such as Collingwood & Essendon leading the way, some clubs might follow this trend. The best team that you can have around the coach, no matter the structure or titles would work just as well as having a director of football, IMO.

It still comes down to the coach doesn't it and what he ultimately gets out of his playing group? There will be a bigger, more experienced name attached to these director of coaching roles, as in the case of Malthouse. Nothing yet suggests it will work better than the traditional coach and assistant set up.

It will be interesting to see how it works. It should happen with Ess & Hird before the Malthouse/Buckley set up at Collingwood.

Connolly's role as GM would be a fair bit removed from that of a Director of Coaching, wouldn't it? As it would be an assistant coach?

Its all about experience, Teaching & nurturing ideas to pass on to the playing group as a whole and in more one on one situations.

How well ideas are communicated to the players, i think coaching is about to change quite drastically. It's too big for one person now....Today may have just fast tracked that feeling.

Director of coaching I'd assume would be a mentor for all coaches; they are there for guidance, moral support etc. Could be of benefit, but probably more so for some in learning. Not for a Dean Bailey, who I think has gone through his paces as assistant and then head coach for a long time now.

Not a terrible idea, but hard to find someone qualified & willing to accept this position.

No.

It's a conceit based around the need to disguise man-management issues.

Club A wants to depose the king in favour of the prince royal. But maybe the king isn't too happy about that. Create a "director of coaching" position to keep him happy (maybe).

Club B appoint the best man for the job, in the full knowledge that he might not be the best man for the job. Create a "director of coaching" position as a safety net.

We have a good coach and a good football department, and don't need these mirages.

Director of Coaching is the job you give experienced, successful coaches when you want to have their name on your payroll for publicity purposes, but don't actually want them as your coach.

Allow people such as Eddie to hang onto people like Buckley. 5. So they can employ 'club legends' like Hird to coach even though they have no experience and avoid what is now known as the 'Voss Phenomenon'. Where club legend is employed on large salary and then takes less than 2 years to obliterate a list.

I would say the DOC is the real brains and general behind the scenes. The nominated coach (Hird, Buckley type) is just the ornamental poster boy with the toothy smile and coiffured hair. A prerequisite for clubs that value image over substance.

The DOC also hides behind the sponsors advertising backdrop at press conferences and whispers in the coaches ears to what to say. The DOC is unfit for the coaches gig because of too many grey hairs(or lack of hair) and wrinkles. Doesn't look so good in front of sponsor logos.

Further I would like to add that Nathan Buckley's ego might still be suffering from hemorrhoids because he is still only a humble assistant this season whilst it appears the Pies are having their strongest chance for a flag in many years. When he does become "THE COACH" their window of opportunity for flags may have evaporated and he could be presiding over a team on the way down.

He was the guy who abandoned struggling Brisbane and refuted strong overtures from impoverished North to play with them because he wanted to play with a club that had a REAL chance for the premiership and big money do doubt. Bad decision for him. He missed out on at least two if not three premierships and with the right moves ala Martin Pike he could have bagged 5. Another great player with all the lesser decorations that football can provide except the ultimate one.
