Johnstone (and Fraser) might not have reached the heights expected of a No.1 draft pick, but he (they) still played 200+ games. Since when is that not 'cutting it'?

We just made the right decision to trade Johnstone when he still had some value and got an excellent trade for him.

Well said maurie.

No doubt Trav could have got some more out of himself but 200 games is not easy, someone will have the stats for me at the ready but not many get to this mark. I loved watching Trav play despite the frustrations, loved his kicking. I think he gets a bit of a bum wrap for his time at Brissy. I think he has tried more than he ever did with us without maybe the 100% consistency of effort still.

A great move by MFC to trade him when they did, the currency was still good and now I get to enjoy my new fav as a result, Jack Grimes. When he is out there anyway.

Hope it's not the end for Trav, but if it is, well played Trap.

There is a rumour doing the rounds that Bruce/GC will announce he is going to the

Gold Coast post the BandF, it will be announced tomorrow. I don't place any weight in it I have no source I have heard

2nd and 3rd hand. But it has been persistent and this is the rumour thread.

Why would we have retired McDonald? Doesn't this effectively leave a Veteran's list posi unfilled. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

I expect Green to be on the list in 2011, but yes, this rumour's been around a lot

You're right.

We couldn't have waited for Bruce to make a decision; we had to properly farewell Junior.

I don't think Bruce will go, but if he does, I am in favour of a full reversal of the decision to retire Junior.

I can only surmise that he'd consider going to GC because he'd get more years e.g 2-3 instead

of the probable 1 he'd get at MFC. Remember he's out of contract he's essentially a free agent. In other words

what happened with Mcdonald should bare no effect on his decision.

You misunderstand.

It's all speculation but my point is that if Bruce goes we effectively have 2 spots on the Vets list and only one veteran (Green). If the club wasn't confident of re-signing Bruce then why would they have let McDonald go.

In white board Weds, Bails is very strong about pointing out our 5 experienced leaders, how important they will be next year etc. The 5 included Bruce.

Not sure if this carries weight but thought I'd throw it out there regarding this ongoing rumour.

Maybe we knew Bruce was going to GC, and with Jnr going, this frees up a spot on the veterans list. We then knew that we would be getting Pav to fill that last veterans spot!!

This all is based on what I have quickly come up with, not knowing if Bruce is actually going or if Pav is old enough for the veterans list...

Player's can't switch clubs and go on the Vets list.

You can't put players from other clubs onto oyur VL until they have been here for 10 years.

So Pav would be 39...

It's designed to keep the Brad Johnson's of this world around longer than would be afforded them on the actual list.

And i'm saying that Cameron Bruce isn't the head of our list management department so whether

Mcdonald left or not shouldn't effect his decision. If Cameron Bruce and his manager where deciding to stay

or go why would they be swayed by being on the Vet's List. It's a pure win for the MFC Bruce get's nothing

for it.

I'm sure Bruce won't go the enticement to be a one club player amongst your mates is far stronger than enticement onto the Vet's list.

You have completely missed the point.

It has nothing to do with anything affecting Bruce's decision. It is about the club.

The club gets to have 2 veterans effectively extras on the list and have only half of thier TPP in the slary cap. It was going to be Bruce and Green in 2011, with Junior gone. With Bruce gone as well we would be failing to take advantage of the Veteran's list.

If the club believed or suspected that Bruce would go, surely the decision to let Junior go would have been different or at least delayed.

Maybe, but in the instance that they convinced Bruce to stay (not that he needs convincing - this is all probably rubbish) and they didn't act on Junior - he would not have had the farewell he deserved.

Maybe the club thinks McDonald will not be in the best 22 next year due to age/injury, and it was time for him to retire. Just because we can put 2 players on the veterans list, doesn't mean we have to if the club thinks he is not going to be worth keeping.

Based on todays annoucement of the compensation picks, the story becomes a little more clear, should Bruce unfortunately decide to leave.

Since compensation is based on salary, and Bruce will be highly paid by demons and offered a high pay packet by GC, he will give good compensation.

He will 100% get more than a 4th band selection that was given for Nathan Krakeur.

He will, at the very least, get us a 3rd band selection, which this year would be pick 27ish... like Bock from Adelaide.

However, if the afl decides to give us a 2nd bank selection, which is a pick directly after our first round pick, that would leave us with pick 12 and 13... a pretty good position

If the MFC thought they could get a pick 13 for Bruce the entire footy department would skip the B&F and be wrapping his china ware in butchers paper as we speak.

IF Pav wanted to come to the cdemons I would be happy to give him what ever he wanted and offer him the captaincy. He is like a Judd, and what would make it ok is the fact that he is miles better than anyone on our list.

Would be a better pick up than Judd IMO

Nonsense

Damien Barrett on the footy show said that Jones 'isn't sure about his place at Melbourne' or something along those lines and wants a real good talk with Bailey before staying. Barrett is normally pretty good but surely that cant be right? Jones loves the club... but then again, Brock did too and look what happened there...

I watched that too. I doubt he'll leave the club as he loves the boys, but I can see his reasoning behind it, as he'll struggle to get a spot with Blease, Gysberts and others coming into the side next year.

He's only 22 though, so you could probably consider him part of those young guns

I've lost count of the number of times Barrett has made a similar claim then weeks later it is proven what he said must have been fabricated.

I put absolutely no credence in what he has said; it is much more likely that he has been reading 'land and BF.

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
