Why has Brad Green got the kicking yips

I thought Grad green played a fantastic game today except for his kicking. He has been one of the most reliable kicks for goal in the AFL for most of his career, from any angle and from any distance out. Today he just couldn't land them and he seems to have lost the knack of the long goal. His marking though was outstanding.

Any one got any theories, and what might be done? He could have easily bagged five today if he had his kicking boots on

Will no doubt get killed for posting this, but his costly misses today highlight to me why we've been so bad for so long, because our senior players always struggle when the pressure is on.

Now I love Brad Green, and he is one of our better players and leaders, but his misses today were very very costly for someone who was the second oldest and most experienced player on the ground. He was very quiet in the first half, and then got on top of his opponent in the second, and there should have been no excuses for him to miss three simple shots in perfect conditions.

I wonder whether he would have missed if we were 10 goals down.

Also, please don't waste your time abusing me, because I love Brad Green and he is awesome and bla bla bla

I think the fact that he started to really get on the end of it when the heat was on proves the opposite of what you're saying. It was very disappointing that he missed those shots, but players who are having a lot of set shots on goal always have off days so I'm not ready to put it down to mental weakness yet. I think it was just an off day.

If you want to see someone who goes to water when the heat is on, look no further than the bloke wearing the black and white guernsey number 1 today. If there's a bigger downhill skier in the AFL I'm yet to see him.

The pressure today was completely different to the Power game.

Huge crowd, big TV audience and the pressure to perform on the big stage.

I'm probably wrong and he just had a stinker of a day in front of goal, but some days I do wish we had more senior players who consistently delivered when it mattered... or more than one at least.

We missed Junior today.

Jaded, I can understand what you are saying, but I don't think Green has ever had issues with 'pressure' kicking for goal, just ask Carlton .

And I am sure no one more than Brad Green would recognise that.

They do. Though a good/great percentage is 60%... Green over the journey I reckon would be only just below that. Just like some of the better kicks at goal (Neitz springs to mind) he'll kick 3.1 or 4.0 for a couple of weeks... then play a game or two where he misses EVERYTHING.

It's not that they're wrong about him being a good kick... they're wrong in saying he's better than everyone else. He's at the top of the pile, but even the most accurate kicks have crappy days.

If it did it was pushed left or right with the player trying to get the distance knowing that 50m + was going to be difficult.

But Bruce has never been a great kick for goal. Green has (remember the 2000 semi final against Carlton, one of the Game's better moments). He has also consistently kicked long goals. Monday they were falling short even when they were inside 50m. To me it was a surprise that was all. It is not as though he is unable to kick them, as he still kicks long goals on the run. It is his set shots that are the problem, which seems to indicate a change in technique which may need working on.

Correct. He is often overrated as at set chot for goals eminating from his terrific effort against Carlton in the 2000QF. Not unreasonably he has not been able to sustain it over his career. But he is not above the pack when shooting for goal. Has missed a number of gettable shots over the journey.

Neitz was not a good example. If ever there was a hot and cold goal kicker it was Neitz.

Try again Demon 16 on the weather . It was picture perfect conditions at the MCG. No breeze with the weather still. You dont get it any easier at the MCG and Green must have played nearly 100 games there!!! Both O'Brien and Dick scored 50+ metre goals and the ball did not deviate in flight. Green missed one from 55 metres because he pushed for extra distance. But all the others were bread and butter nailable. He didn't. His effort to leave a ball 10 metres short and wide from 50 metres at the Punt Road end was surprising given the other efforts. Green knows better than anyone that you have to make those shots count particularly in the context of the match.

I stand to be corrected but from what I can recall the majority of set shots from on or about 50 that were put on any sort of angle struggled to make the decent, I can recall many players looking to dish off from this distance yesterday.

No breeze and some sun doesn't always make for weather where the ball will travel through the air as expected, it was still cold and that can be enough to put a little extra weight on the ball, I think you will find Malthouse even referenced this exact point. OK I might stop now that I have used Malthouse to make my points!

I think you've raised a really good point. If anyone has the stats I'd be fascinated to see Green's conversion rate between 2000-2007 versus 2008-2010.

He has long been referred to as one of the most accurate kicks for goal in the competition, but I suspect this has waned over the past 3 seasons. I used to put down the glasses when he marked anywhere within 50m of goals, but I now reckon he'll probably convert about 60%. Can anyone access those stats?

I think most demon fans would agree that Green is not a lay down set shot, he is good, fairly good and would be around 60-65% which is probably the going rate in AFL footy...always has been, always will be.

Jack Watts is one IMO that I will start to put down the glasses, hopefully he starts to get more of it as he is a SUPER set shot. Best technique I've seen at the Dees since G Lyon

Personally, I think Green sometimes gets too close to the man on the mark when kicking for goal. Especially 40-45m+ out from goal. I think this creates some inconsistencies in elevation, therefore leads to inaccuracy. This has been mentioned before and even watching last nights replay, Luke Darcy made mention.

We kick so few goals that most of Green's possessions are pressure goals for the team outcome. I couldnt think of many players that I would prefer to have kicking for a pressure goal that BG.

Green's shot at goal late in the 3rd happened right in front of me and he got far to close to the man on the mark so I suspected it would pull up short. As for his poster in the last I to thought it was home.

Shattered also we've let the pies off twice now, along with the Bulldogs once. Throw in losses against West Coast and Kangaroos who we should have beaten and we could be 9-3 and in the top 4. So a lot to look forward to next year and beyond as we learn how to win these matches.

If his last shot had not shaved the post we would have won the game. From the 2nd Tier of the MCC Reserve it looked home to me although Brad reacted right at the end

I am not completely disagreeing with the points made on this thread, i just think you are being a tad harsh on Greeny.

I thought his 2nd half in particuliar was fantastic.

You guys may be right that he gets to close to the man on the mark before kicking-that can be rectified with some training.
