Chinese foray could reach 100 million

"THE AFL'S first foray into China could reach as many as 100 million people with the October Kaspersky AFL Cup a chance to be broadcast live into the Shanghai region." (AFL)

Im very interested to se what the club makes of any marketing oportunities from this event.

Is there a possibility of some sort of International membership ? As its the Kasperky Cup can we look for some promotional subsidies to selling merchandise...i.e getting our brand out there.

Maybe a competition ...the prize is a sporting holiday for some lucky Chinese to an all expense paid game at the G to se the Dees ?

Hmm.. the Filth have Emirates...maybe we can snare China East .. etc...just a thought :)

I think we might be very lucky to be one of the teams getting Chinese exposure..the upside could be quite unreal..

An audience of 100 million is an opportunity not to be wasted.

Does us being "Demons" have any negative connotations, being that the Chinese can be very superstitious of such things...?

Well they have the dragons--Chinese dragons are legendary creatures in Chinese mythology and folklore, whilst demons may be described as In religion and mythology, occultism and folklore, a demon (or daemon, daimon; from Greek δαίμων daimôn) is a supernatural being that is generally described as a malevolent spirit; however, the original neutral connotations of the Greek word daimon does not carry the negative ones that were later projected onto it, as Christianity spread.

I cannot see a major issue with this..if it did- we may have to be the dragons when we play inChina.

I had had exactly the same thought. Lions, on the other hand, as they are depicted in Chinese culture, appear during New Year to scare away Demons and Ghosts.

The reason we actually changed from Melbourne Demons to Melbourne FC and changed our logo was because Gardner and co. were attempting to push into China. Remember, about 3-4 years ago?

I think the Demons tag is a good one so long as the story behind it is told - that we were getting beaten badly in a game back in the 'old days' and the coach gave a spray, telling the players to 'Lift their heads and play like Demons'.

It's a deliberate statement of ferocity and energy.

A bit of pre-game talk-up while explaining how the game works, a bit of colour and history.

Chinese superstitions only go so far; they aren't crazy people. They'll get it.

I don't know if that was officially the reason, but I'm sure it was an important part.

That was a horrible business move.

This is total rubbish from top to bottom. Popularized myth that snowballed way too far. No part of this is remotely true, I implore you all to believe and accept this.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
