Gutsy Win - Changes vs Tigers

Recommended Posts

Thought I would start a thread to talk about ins and outs for next week and to discuss who played well and who didn't today.

I thought the first half was the biggest joke of an AFL game I have ever seen. Both sides skill errors were deplorable and the

conditions didn't help.

Positves :

Bennell definitely made up for last weeks effort, I thought his decision making today was brilliant. Didn't crumble under pressure

and give the ball up quickly. Took the opposition on.

Frawley and Grimes were our backline generals. So confident in them at the moment.

Davey and Green once again played as our senior guys should. Macca played a captains game too apart from the odd mistake.

Jamar unbelievable again. Really strong game from him. Second best game after last week?

They were the players who really stood out for me today. Another step forward for the youngsters too.

Negatives :

The fact that Adelaide flooded the whole match really made us look bad as we were constantly handballing in circles and putting our

players under pressure. Reminded me of Round 1 against the Hawks and I was getting worried a blow out was inevitable.

Newton just didn't do enough again. His first half got a pass from me as I thought he contested and chased well but after that he went

down hill.

Bate and Bruce. I understand everyone on this site has different opinions on these two. Bate may get a lifeline as he kicked two cheap but

important goals which really makes me frustrated as he was so shocking for the rest of the match. Bruce just has no confidence. Can't kick goals

he should, keeps passing to players under pressure. He is really playing like it's his first year and it's not good enough.

So the outs for me this week. Outs: Bate, Bruce and Newton (Newton only out if Miller played well on the weekend)

Ins : Sylvia, Rivers and Miller

Overall I am very happy about the win !!! Great to get one on the board so early in the season.

Would love to hear others thoughts !

Go dees.

I am i big fan of Miller but he just doesnt cut it and from all reports was no good in the VFL. We deffinetly have a hole in our forward line and i am not sure who is the answer. Apparantly Watts played well in the VFL of a wing and half forward. Would be great too see him next week but i doubt they will play him although Richmond might be a great option as we all know how they are traveling??

I dont think you can drop Bate, kicked a couple of goals and looked much better today than previous weeks he will stay in the team. If they didn't drop him last week he won't be dropped this week

Bate still looks like he is not upto speed with the game. He was slow today and he was made to look sercond rate on several occasions, he needs to go back to Casey and regain his fitness and confidence. Bruce is a tough one, he is one of the most frustrating players in our team. He is a good solid player who is capable of more. I also question his commitment and hardness. Something needs to be said or done, I just don't know what. I thought Juice put in a good game for the first three quarters. He provided a good physical presence and more energy than I have seen out of Miller of late. His stamina let him down in the last, it also looked as though he was hampered by injury, I'd keep him in. Next week, In Sylvia, Out Bate

Okay, it wasn't Cam's best effort today, but I thought he was better in the second half. According to the commentators, he's considered a 'creative' backman that backs himself and unfortunately he doesn't man up closely enough.

Much better when released into the middle, and thankfully the coaching staff saw that and made the move - kudos to them.

I have no idea who to drop - I know one thing, the way Miller is playing atm, it might be round 20 before we see him again.....

I Thought Bennell was poor for most of the Match, Just running in circles & "NOT taking them on with hard running", like he used to until producing something in the last. But we can't afford to drop him as he is a good hard runner normally. I'd keep him in for this reason, that he did fire up in the last Qtr & he can be a running ball carrier.

Davey, Green and Macca played with leadership, steadying the side, but none played at their best. It was enough.

Jamar & Frawley were my picks for our best, along with special commendation to an underdone Garland who held out the Crows time & again.

Grimes showed true grit & a good footy brain, setting us up numerous times.

Newton was effective with out starring, making a tall contest. We can be harsh on him because of past inept times, but he's starting to learn how to play the way we need him to, for the team. Persist with.

Bate was good today, winning numerous possessions mid & forward, but the whole team butchered our attacks going into 50. This made him & us look amateurish.

Bruce is a good runner who is not suited to the modern game where he has to either penetrate the opposition zone or flood via sprinting or precise kicking.. He doesn't do either well. he's a gut runner but not a sprinter.

My Ins:, would be limited to Sylvia & Cheney, If the position is available for Cheney.

PS: we have to keep playing Jamar as a solitary Ruck until we get all of Sylvia, Morton, Jetta back in. Were lucky we don't have to play over @ the house of pain yet.

Don't mention Miller please. I'm not one for bagging players on the internet but our last two games we have actually looked like a football team. There is absolutely no reason to bring Miller back. Let's make that absolutely bloody clear right now.

Out: Dunn, Newton

Either Garland or Rivers to go forward.

We need to construct our Physical structure to suit the coming 3 games against Richmond (A) then Brisbane (H), followed by Kangaroos (A)...

we need a Solid & settled tall defense before we hit Brisbane.

We'll need all of Frawley, Warnock, Garland, & Rivers against Brisbane, IMO. Frawley & Garland giving our defense versatility, tall or small, & with class. Add Cheney to this defense & IMO we have as physically strong & solid a young defense as you'd want. Just add run out of the back, > Grimes + Davey/Bennell.

Martin to play against the Lions to keep Merrett honest & Watts by then to create matchup headaches for Mr Voss.

Probably the only change would be Sylvia in and Garland out. They played well today in horrible conditions. Newton will hold his spot again and I really don't see anyone really crying out to be dropped. Bartram surprised me today with the job he did, so he gets to stay. Perhaps rest one of the youngsters to make room? Doubtful, but it might happen.

What roles do Rivers and Cheney have in the big half when you have?

B: Bartram Warnock Garland

HB: Grimes, Frawley Bruce

Martin to play against the Lions to keep Merrett honest & Watts by then to create matchup headaches for Mr Voss.

Unless Martin is performing I would not play him.

Watts ready in 2 weeks...sure.

If I could be bothered I would dig up your comments about Bartram, espcially when you pretty much swore he was not getting a new contract.

I still think we're playing with fire not giving Jamar any ruck support, plus Martin was apparently very good for Casey as a forward target on Saturday night.

With that in mind:

In: Sylvia (finally?!), Martin

Out: Newton, Dunn

After todays perfromance I can't see any changes taking place unless someone got injured. Newton IMO did enough to warrent selection next week. Scully was quiet but shouldn't be dropped. Garland was solid without being outstanding and Bartram played a very good game. If sylvia is fit for next week i'd expect one of the following players mentioned above to be omitted. It'll be a tough call for the selection panel later in the week. Go Dees!

I'd give Sculley a couple of weeks at Casey, he's made some very bad mistakes over the last two weeks. He dropped two simple chest marks last week and kicked in to the man on the mark twice today. He also needs to work on his handball and get some distance in it, he is good in close but lacks penetration. These errors need to be eradicated if he is going to fulfill his promise. That turn in to an opponent today was very ordinary.

I think he will be a very good player but these errors and his confidence need a bit of work.

Sylvia in and I'd leave the rest of the team as is, players need to be rewarded when the team puts in a couple of good performances.

would be very surprised if Spencer didn't get a game... I just can't see the coaching staff asking Jamar to make such a huge effort 3 weeks in a row, monster game today. Otherwise it should be pretty interesting, seems Strauss' absence probably helped the attack/defence balance but it's too small a sample size. That said perhaps one of Bate and Dunn for Sylvia, and hypocritically strauss for Bartram, ??Spencer for Dunn/Bate??. I'm guessing once Watts is ready he'll come in for Juice and Dunn will be back

Read my mind, though I'd be just as happy with just Sylvia for Dunn.

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
