Not sure if anyone knows of this yet but tomorrow at 10:20 before the Grand Final the SA under 16 side will be playing the VIC Country under 16 side coached by Nathan Buckley.1 player in SA side is Jack Viney son of former Melb great Todd. Here could be a future Father-Son pick for us so will be interesting to see how he goes.Jack is still eligible for the under 16s next year so it will be afew years yet but obviously he has some potential. Also just keep your eye on a young lad called Mitchell Grigg who plays at Nowood & ive seen him close up.He started the year in the under 16s then dominated & went to under 18s,got a B.O.G then went up to the reserves, after 2 games he went up to Norwoods League side & played the last few games there, thats pretty good for a kid to play at that level when only 16,Norwood also has a young Ruckman who did the same thing & replaced the injured ex Swans Ruckman Stephen Doyle, hes about 198 & 90+ kgs.Just a couple of youngsters to watch but id be keen on Father-son Viney

The two U/16 finals moved to Visy Park to protect the playing surface for the big one. Would get pretty cut up by the time StKilda and Geelong took to the field with the weather forecast. Disappointing for the players but meh...the good ones will get their chance eventually

Oh. Looks like I won't.

You think with the huge coverage, starting really early that they'd have at least some highlights

of all the pre games.. you'd think..

On 2nd thought I wouldn't think so, based on extremely limited appeal.

I actually have a reason to want to watch it, and i'd still pass it up on a coin flip

I am good friends with Jack Viney's old coach. His coach of the last couple of seasons until he went back to Adelaide this season as his old man became assistant coach in Adelaide after a long stint at Hawthorn.

Anyway, his old coach (who is a die hard Melbourne supporter) is extremely excited about this kid. He said he had "never seen a player take apart a game like Jack Viney". He also said that he is fast, has all the skills on both sides of his body, is a superb kick and is very, very tough. He said he was the best u15 player (2008 season) he had ever seen and that if the draft for this group was today he would likely go number one.

Jack Viney is a Hawthorn supporter after being brought up at Hawthorn with his dad assistant coach. However, he has already excepted he is highly likely to become a Demon. Simply as a first round prospect he will have a choice of either signing to go to West Sydney or taking father son as a Demon. He chooses us. The MFC is in regular contact with Jack Viney, if his form continues over the next two seasons he will be picked up f/s and become a demon, further adding to a impressive list of midfielders.

It is my understanding that Jack just turned 15 in April this year therefore another 3 years of under age football. I therefore understand that West Sydney will not get a look in,as in the 2012 draft, they can sellect players but he will only qualify as a father/son. This is my interpretation as in http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,2...8851,00.html.If I am wrong, please explain. Thanks

So we agree then. If he was 14yo in March 2009 with an April birthday he will be 16yo in April 2010 and eligible for the 2011 draft. This being the case if he is any good he will have to make a choice between MFC of West Sydney. My understanding is that he has already made his mind up to go to MFC if given the f/s opportunity.

Sounds like a skillful and pacy version of his old man (insert mental picture of homer drooling over tasty food here)

Ok so If Jack Is available In 2011 (the West Sydney draft) and is as decent as they say, we could be in a prime position. Say Jack Is rated a top 10 pick. By 2011 we could finish around 7th-10th Id say, after all the West Sydney picks that would mean our first pick would be something like pick 25-30. Meaning we could land a top 10 pick around pick 30 under the father son rule.

Obviously I have no idea how good Viney Is but here's hoping.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
