Given the our likely priority pick coming soon we may have to make room for some new players, who would you get rid of, and how many?

Obviously there are a few players there that do not deserve to be even considered for delisting, but I thought I should throw them up anyway.

I have taken trading out as an option because that might allow us to free up some spots on the list, and therefore make this poll difficult to work out.

You have neglected the fact that many of the players listed are contracted for next year.

Before embarking on this exercise (which i do think is worthwhile) it would be appreciated if we could have a list of those who are uncontracted for next year.

Yeah, I guessed based on who I think is contracted for next year, but I'm far from sure

Yeah I tried to find the contract situation of the players but got nowhere, is there a place where this info can be found? If so I will update each player with their status.

Depending on contracts (obviously) it looks to me like Cheney or Jamar could be squeezed out.

Which would be an unfortunate series of events.

And Valenti is a virtual certainty to not make it.

We need to open up 5 places for draftees + upgrade Spender.

This is bc the draft is very shallow this year due to all 17 yr olds that ussually would be picked going to the GC team.

Pick 1,2,18,35,50 PSD pick 1.

Retire- all players over 28 who aren't pivotal to our team

- Whelan

- Wheatley

- Robertson

- McDonald

Delist-

- Bell

That is 5 very obvious options.

If we decide to use pick 66, then the next in line to delist in Newton imo.

NOTE: Valenti, Zomer and Hughes should be delisted off the rookie list, though they don't open up spots. McKenzie retained.

Bell and Newton would be two of the first to go, but both are contracted for 2010 so they stay. While both Robbo and Junior may pull the plug at the end of the year, only Bruce is eligible for the veteran's list next year outside of those two, so if both McDonald and Robertson retire, their two omissions only open up one senior list spot. In essence, we could have Junior on the list and have 40 players or not have him and have a list of 39.

yikes, that's right, forgot about that.

Paul Johnson is contracted for 2010 also?

No wonder we had to create the position Tim Harrington has now filled.

I doubt Cheney would get pushed out as a 2nd year player.

I'm thinking Jamar might be a bit stiff, seeing as we'd probably drop PJ if we could.

ps. anyone know Bartram's status?

No way will we just delist Jamar.

He's of far more value than Cheney.

This draft has a lot of quality at the top but it seems to tail off quite quickly after the first 25 or 30. I think that's a key factor. If we get the 3 top-20 picks we want, it wouldn't surprise me if we don't go much deeper than that.

I get the feeling that, apart from the obvious retirees, there won't be much cutting into the current playing group this year. There's simply not enough to be gained by cutting just for the sake of cutting, unless the club can be sure of picking up better prospects in the lower levels of the draft than the players they're cutting. For example, they'd be crazy to get rid of Jamar, Cheney or Valenti for a below-30 pick in this year's draft, IMHO.

Of course, having said that, if Newton, PJ & Bell were contracted to 2009 instead of 2010, they'd be out too, because there would be a better chance of picking up someone better in the below-30 part of the draft. As it is, they've each got another year to prove that they're worth keeping beyond a nanosecond after the final siren of the 2010 season.

We must free up 6 spots, 5 at a pinch if we can retain Spencer on the RL. Is it possible to have a 3rd year rookie? If so I think that would be preferable to promoting Spencer to the senior list just yet, he still needs plenty more time to learn to kick.

JMac, Robbo, Wheats and Whelan are the obvious candidates

I voted for Bartam & Buckley too as I don't rate either of them. Bartram seems to be the teacher's pet though and the MFC often seems reluctant to move kids on after a year on the sidelines so I am not sure they would delist Bucks either.

It is unfortunate Newton & Bell are contracted.

PJ is in the gun too, everyone loved him last year though and I would probably lean towards keeping him before the others I've listed.

If we could off load any of Newton, Bell or PJ for pick 102 so we can free up another spot on the list before draft day that would be ideal.

Surely if we are aiming to draft a ruckman we will have too many if we don't let one go.

And if we aren't looking to draft a ruckman then we must be looking to develop form within... and personally I think the cupboard is pretty bare.

Whelan, Robbo, Wheatley, McDonald & i'm not sure about the 5th.

I think we'll use either 4 picks at the ND & our PS pick. or just 5 at the ND...

So I guess its out of Meesen, Miller & Buckley...

Considering we are unlikey to get another ruck prospect at the draft, we'd probably re-sign Meesen

Buckley was injured all year so it depends on whether or not DB rates him..

Miller is not going to improve, but we have a lack of key forwards..

Why the hell we signed Newton onto a 2 year deal last year i'll never know.

I think it would be very harsh to de-list McNamara or Cheney. I'd rather get rid of some of the others who've been around longer and haven't shown much..

Who was the mug that said we should delist Maric?!!

I'd retire McDonald, Robbo, Whelan & Wheatley.

Trade Newton, Buckley, Johnson, Bell.

Lets us have 4 picks ND, 1 pick PSD and elevate Valenti & Spencer. 1 more year on rookie list for McKenzie for mine.

Sorry 'STTE' haha but im confused now?

No, if you're under 195cm's then you might as well go play VFL as far as i'm concerned.

This is all in reference to your Key Forward idea. Miller is 193 cm. So in your books he is not a Key forward and should be playing VFL?

And yes I saw that, who in there right mind would delist Maric lol.

No one's trading for any of those 4 TD...

Maybe with a pick also as a sweetner, just to move up the draft order a little with our 4th pick????

Would love another top 20 pcik so we could get Scully, Trengove, Jetta & Panos!

Miller's listed on our club page on the AFL website at 194cms & 94 kgs.

I'm just going by what i've read about what some recruiters think. Generally its about 195cm's they're looking for. Its a rough estimate. I'd say 190-192cm's would be considered under-sized for a KPF.

194cm's is close enough to 195cm's ain't it?? Plus, he's a tank. It's not just his height, but his frame and his upper body.

He's a KPF goddamit, but he should be playing in the VFL...

Mentions that the club is having weekly meetings where they discuss the drafting situation. We haven't decided yet how many picks we're going to take.

He refused to discuss Robbo's future.

hmmm. Robbo's in trouble...

So, say our 3rd round pick (e.g P34...) & one of those 4 players... for a P19?

It's a nice idea and I would love for it to happen, but could you honestly say that you'd be enticed by that if you're another team's list manager? I think we'd actually have to give up a player the other team could use instead of just our deadwood unfortunately...

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
