How about he continues to do his job well, that would be a good start,

Bang.

His had a good month but his next challenge will probably be dealing with some heavy tags/attention from opposition. Build from that and if everything goes well, he'll get his chance. Not 2010 though.

Dont think Leadership groups are required

My thoughts exactly.

Come back to us in a couple of years H_T.

That's quite dismissive from you Rogue. :P

Thought you might have elaborated a little more on your thoughts, considering "leadership" is a BIG problem at the moment. Or the lack there of. There have been a few posters point out the leadership shown by Sylvia on the field. I don't see alot of the current leadership group leading by example at the moment - on the field...Moloney & Bruce the exceptions.

PS. Who had this idea first, you or Demonology's DW?

Well going by the "times", I'd say DW. Although I must point out, I was unaware until after I created the topic, I visited O'logy afterwards and was quite surprised of the similarities. What must be said is DW's thread comes from a Captain issue. Mine is nothing of the sort. As you say that's "crazy talk." Mine is from purely a leadership group angle, nothing else.

Haha. As I said, Dappa Dan - and a few others - have really taken the words out of my mouth.

Sylvia's track record indicates he hasn't been living the values the Club wants to promote, so from that perspective he's not in the ballpark.

I don't think a few good weeks suddenly changes that and no player needs to be in the leadership group to be a leader or lead by example on-field (or off).

As Dappa Dan has suggested, your leaders don't need to be your best players.

I do think it helps to be a good player but the best players don't necessarily make the best leaders.

I also think this talk a bit premature on the back of a few games, although if he continues to play well you might be able to say you started up the bandwagon :D

As for the chances of Sylvia in the leadership group I don't think it'll happen this year but it could happen next year.

These days the leadership groups are quite large and the list turnover is quite high, so if you hang around long enough you're in with a decent chance.

Without knowing Sylvia it's hard to form a judgement but I'm not sure it'd help his footy.

As someone said, if his good form continues he's likely to attract more attention next year, which could prove a major challenge in itself.

Well going by the "times", I'd say DW. Although I must point out, I was unaware until after I created the topic, I visited O'logy afterwards and was quite surprised of the similarities.

If the times are close yours could well have been first - I think the time has been out for a while.

Yep, fair enough.

It's easy to make a big call like that though - no one persecutes you if you fail to pick the winner with a roughie, but if it happens - even a few years later - you're the modern day Nostradamus.

That's just it then. Why say come back and see us in a couple of years H_T, then go onto say this?

I never posted that Sylvia should be considered this year for the leadership group. Read my opening post.

The basis of the thread is that if he can continue his current form and win the respect and trust of his teammates/club, do you think he should be considered for the leadership group in 2010?

From the opening post: -

This guy has played his best month of football for the Melbourne Football Club. If he continues this throughout 2009 and gains the trust and respect of his teammates, do you think he could be considered leadership group material for 2010?

Afterall we are crying out for leaders and at 23 years of age, there is no better time for this lad to stand up!

You're old school.

To be honest, there is a lot more to be gained by empowering the players, which is best done through a leadership group.

To be content with the C-VC-DVC system is an antiquated view.

Sorry.

Sorry.

Empowering the players through the leadership group is a good system. But IMO, only if those within the group provide leadership - good leadership and that they contribute to the cause through their actions on & off the field.

You're setting up a scenario whereby a player - in this case Sylvia, but it could be extended to every single player on the list - ticks every box for leadership group criteria and then asking whether that player could be in the leadership group. It's like asking whether Sylvia could be captaincy material if he was the second coming of Barassi.

Sure, he - or any other player who has been around while, strung some good games together and has the respect and trust of their teammates - could be considered.

As I said:

...because 'could' doesn't mean should.

No, you read my post ;)

...I didn't assert that you did.

So you agree, he 'could' be considered next year for the leadership group, based on the achieved requirements (ie. outlined in the opening post - or even as you put it.... strung some good games together and has the respect and trust of their teammates )?

PS. "Come back to us in a couple of years H_T."

Every single other player could also be considered. In the scenario you've outlined there's no way Sylvia could not be considered.

That doesn't mean he'll be a contender and shortlisting him is another thing. Including him in the leadership group yet another.

A better question is whether he 'should'.

No need to say Sorry

Just an opinion :)

No way in hell would sylvia become captain or our next captain, something special would have to occur.

Someone who has stuffed up as much as he has doesnt deserve to captain good form or not.

I was calling for Sylvia to be dropped about 6 weeks ago, but since then enough has happened for me to think that he does have a real opportunity to be a vital and important part of MFC for the next 5+ years. The vast improvement in his form is the obvious one, but for me the honesty and commitment to improve all parts of his football and personal life that he showed in the article, and that he has continue to openly talk about in interviews since, is a real big tick for me.

If he continues to stay on the track he is now on, I think he will pick himself in the leadership group in the next two years. Some people seem to deny others the chance to redeem themselves and make good, but I definetely don't. I think people who have taken the long way to reach their full potential can be equal, if not better leaders than those that have always made the right choice.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
