Good statistics , but poor summation .

FITNESS is certainly not the problem ,as exemplified by the astonishing statistic that we have outscored the opposition in 6 out of 10 final quarters this year , and had we kicked accurately yesterday it would have been 7 out of 10 .

I don't think we have the fitness to play a match out for four quarters.

I don't really agree with your take on the last quarters. A few of those last quarters were won when the match was over. We have won 6 of the 10, but even then our percentage for the quarter is only 92. We kicked 0.4 in last night's last qyarter but they kicked 1.6 - so you can hardly underline our poor kicking while ignoring theirs.

Perhaps you're right, it may not be fitness but I still bloody want to know what's going on at half time

Maybe yesterday... but in general? You MUST have your players mixed up.

PJ got twice as much of it, and yes used it much worse, but Jamar isn't even in the same league as PJ for disposal. PJ's pass to Frawley is the kind of thing Jamar dreams about doing.

But it isn't PJ's or Jamar's job to be a playmaker and have pin point passing.

He's 199, 105 kg ruckmen. His first job is to be a ruckman. He needs to look in the mirror and realize how freaking big he is and effing use it to his advantage.

For the youngsters it might be fitness but the 21 and over brigade, and we have had teams full of those, it is mental.

They do not want to lose the game by leaving their man and trying to win the game so they sit back and lose the game anyway.

They seize up, it is understandable but I want Bailey at half time to come in and not talk about the opposition and just tell them to go and get the pill, and work hard to get the footy, and themselves, forward as often as possible.

They all expect Aaron to get them going and it's wearing thin with me and, I suspect, with Aaron.

He needs help and we need to get it in the corridor, move it quickly, have runners alongside whoever is running through the corridor, and have players blocking or shepparding to aide the movement and we can stop looking at paltry Inside 50 counts (33 against the Saints).

Jamar's work in close, and his contested marking (not to mention his ability to actually win a ruck contest), makes him 10 times more valuable than PJ.

We have plenty of others capable of winning the ball in the middle and actually hitting targets more than once a game, we don't need another. What we need is contested marking around the ground, and getting first use of the ball through the middle. Jamar gives us both of these.

Neither are good enough though.

It was the first time in recent history that I can remember Jamar taking a pack mark and using his brute of a body to his advantage. Let alone taking two or three contested marks. He doesn't do it nearly enough, but he seemed to be able to move very freely last night. Perhaps this is the start of a new leaf for Jamar? His disposal is still a big, big problem. He consistently looks for the handball, as his kicking leaves a lot to be desired. His shot on goal last night was about what I expected.

As obvious as it sounds, it's clearly our ability to both make the right decisions, at the right time AND pull those decisions off, with effective disposals. If we do this for four quarters, there's no doubt we'll take it up to most opponents.

Jamar has always taken contested marks, not as many as yesterday, but he'll take one or two a game routinely.

He's also routinely among our top tacklers! Consistent racks up a few every game

I'm thrilled that Jamar has had an undeniably great game. He puts in a huge amount of work and gets far too much crap from people expecting him to be Dean Cox or Matthew Kruezer or something.

I agree Distance. The main job of a ruckman is to create a physical presence in stoppages and clear space for midfielders. Jamar's ability to work hard for his midfielders is very good and this currently makes him by far our best ruckman.

If we're relying on pinpoint passes from ruckmen as a cornerstone of our gameplan, then we are kidding ourselves.

I disagree. However, he certainly played very well last night and I hope he keeps it going against Fraser next week.

Agreed. Jamar is your 'classic' ruckman. He's not a brilliant ball user or winner, but he competes. Another thing I agree with is that Jamar's a fantastic tackler.

Good stats. Looks as though it needs to be addressed. I don't think it's our fitness, because in the fourth quarters, I think our returns are better than the third quarters....I think?

Sides have been getting the jump on us, might need to be a bit more switched on, or have more intent on being first to the ball. I wonder how these figures reflect at the stoppages breakdown in the 3rd.....TBH I don't think I want to see those figures. <_<

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
