Whelan the Wrecker.

One of my favourite players from seasons gone by but I get the feeling he won't be around in 2010, regardless of his contract.

Very unlucky with injuries as he's got older but that's what happens and he's had bugger all game time recently at any level.

I'm guessing the footy dept. will draw a line through his name come season's end.

While he is a great defender, which young player would you drop to fit him into the backline (assuming he was fit)?

It will only hurt us in the long run if we send Bennell back to the VFL when Whelan clearly hasn't got a lot of time left.

I'd be very keen to see Wheels stay on at Casey even if he has to go at the end of this year.

He's someone worth keeping as close as possible.

Agree. Would love to see him playing with Casey while also maintaining a part time mentoring role with Melbourne's young aborigonal players. He's been a great servant of the club.

Wheels will play this year and hold his spot. We need some experience in our side.

Wheels will play next week! We lost Frawley and Rivers today who will more than likely be absent next week. Garland is gone for the year probably. Warnock, whilst good in patches, has had the most goals scored against in the league. Our backline is screaming out for Wheels right now!

wheels isnt exactly mr goal stopper though, he is great tackling and gives some good drive out of the backline

his days against phil matera still make me shudder (yeah, ill play 5m away from him ALL DAY!!!)

but, he is great as the elder for the young aboringal boys that we seem to be growing in numbers. he has made aaron davey into the confident person he is today, so im sure a bit of his shine on jetta, benny, wona and jurrah would be great!

I love him. Unashamedly, anabashedly, unequivacally... and other made-up words with made-up spelling...

But I just don't think there's room to keep him. He's just not going to be there in 3 years' time, and we;re going to need that full three years. I would LOVE to see him play in a final in his last game, as I think he may be the most under-rated MFC player of the modern era (no sh%#)... But I would be stunned if it happened.

The real kicker here though, is that the defence has been out-and-out superb this year. Unless he makes his way into the forward-line, there just isn't a place for him. He might be one of the more heart-breaking delistings at years' end.

Personally I hope Bennell ends up as a rebounding defender in the MLeod/Johncock mould... if this takes place, Wrecker is relegated.

The cold reality is that whilst Wheels is a good player when fit his placecard would have to be marked DNR.. Reality is save the fact that so many others went last year that he probably is dead lucky to be here at present. Hope the club allows him to go in a dignified manner. Times ups though and have been saying it for a while..its just a truth :( ...not a bash !!

Agree with your thought on Wheels. He has been a great servant of the club and I'd love it if this is his last year that they bring him into the side for round 13 and play him out the year so his final game against the Saints in round 22 at the G would be game number 150. Think we'd all like to see him go out that way.

I think Wheels has still got at least 3 good years left in him. He might be slowly down a little bit with injury, but he's still one of our best players. He's always solid and leads from the front with his tackling and hard at it style of play. His presence in and around the team is important for not only our emerging backs, but all our youngsters.

Couldn't agree more. We need him there to teach and lead our defenders and young indigenous players. He needs to stay on the ground and play another 2 years or more.

Love him to death, been one of our best over the last decade, but there is no way he has 3 years left in him let alone 3 good years. His body just isn't what it once was. Sorry.

He doesn't have to play to remain a presence in and around the team. I'm sure the club could find a role for him. He'll be around, just not on the field.

I do hope the club can send him off in deserving fashion if this is to be his last year. Like you say, he's always lead from the front and put his body on the line. Deserves to go out with class.

I was just coming back to change that to 2 years.:D That includes this year, seeing as we're only 7 rounds in. I'd say he's still got one more year left in him, even if he doesn't play a lot next year, he's vital to have around the youngsters. I'd certainly want him there in a mentoring type role once he's finished though.

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
