I tell you what RR. I'm not trying to be smart by saying this, because often you are spot on. But if Jordan McMahon can be traded to Richmond for pick 19, these two could at least be considered a chance to command a first round pick on their own. In particular, Aaron Davey.

What Richmond are dumb enough to do at the trade table cannot be used as a measuring stick for the rest of the comp, same goes for Freo. Also keep in mind that Richmond had PPs that year so the value of the picks to them wasnt as great as it was to a top 8 team with 1 pick inside the first 25.

You also need to consider this year is a 'Super Draft' & that 2nd last before the 2010 GC17 draft, both factors which have increased the value of picks significantly.

Trade time - the 12 most annoying, exacerbating, frustrating things you are certain to see is one of the best posts I've seen at Big Footy. A headline summary is below. The idea of trading Green, Bell and Pick 35 for pick 4 clearly fits No. 1 (or No. 4).

No. 12: Crazy 3- or 4-way trades that involve about 15 players and 10 draft picks.

No. 11: We should get him because he would come cheap.

No. 10: Wanting to trade for a player as soon as he comes good.

No. 9: We should trade a prehistoric player to get a youngster because he isn't going to be around when we next challenge.

No. 8: Someone has just signed but "it doesn't mean he can't be traded".

No. 7: We should offer <insert spud A> to <insert team X> because they are lacking in <insert spud A's position>

No. 6: They may be interested in trading him after having a poor year.

No. 5: We won't trade for that superstar because we may miss out on a 15-year player with that pick.

No. 4: We should trade uber-spud + pick for a better pick.

No. 3: You will have to trade with us or risk losing him in the PSD.

No. 2: The rumour-mongering.

No. 1: Quantity does not equal quality (You can't get gold with a piece of crap. And 2 pieces of crap doesn't make it more appealing.)

The only thing about that, is that MOST of the trades that end up going through in those last 15 minutes (or first 15 minutes) of draft week fit into one of those categories!!!

No, on the contrary, I think Richmond were just incredibly stupid to pay that much over what McMahon's real worth is.

Having said that, another club may be prone to a moment of insanity

True.

*Cough* Freo trading Medhurst and pick 8 for Tarrant *Cough*

 Good point.

Ok, so the point is that Richmond were stupid enough to let a deal like that go through.

Let's remember, I did say, "these two could at least be considered a chance to command a first round pick on their own. In particular, Aaron Davey."

F*cking spot on bevan (chopper read anyone?)

those two COULD easily get a first round draft pick by themselves. they probably won't. but green and bell could get 4. if tarrant was traded for 8 and medhurst...then surely bell and green , and maybe 35 would surely get 4 IF PORT WANTED IT.

No on two fronts.

Firstly, one poor deal does not validate another.

Secondly, neither Davey or Green would be a first round pick on their own. And certainly not a viable trade together for pick 4.

Agreed.

But such deals are the exception to the rule not the rule. However, according to some posters the exception is the rule.:rolleyes:

Agreed. I have to thank you, RR, for maintaining some realistic thoughts.

We're not getting pick 4 from Port, especially not how some people on this forum think.

I understand this point as stated response to earlier post.

Ok cheers.

If Green doesn't re-sign, and he wanted to be traded, and Hawthorn wanted him. Would you offer Green and pick 35 to Hawthorn, in exchange for Pick 16? Would that be seen as a win-win deal? Or perhaps Green & Pick 51 for pick 16?

And certainly not a viable trade together for pick 4.

Agree.

edit: I can't imagine that Port would give up Pick 4, unless it's something to do with Didak.

I love that one, but my favourite's still Pick No 1 for Croad and then trading him back like 2 years later for A LOT less.

I think you're right. Williams didn't put any conditions on the pick 4, but he could only have been fishing for an O'Keefe or a Kerr.

And nobody seems to consider the salary cap implications - unless Port have a stupid amount of space in their cap (which i doubt) trading a pick (4) that would take up 50K-100K per year for around, say, 600K/700K+ (Green & Bell) simply doesn't have much chance of working out for them.... unless we pay the salaries ourselves AGAIN

green and 35 for 16- i'd take that

I wouldn't! We got pick 14 (?) for Travis last year and i'd rate him only a little better than Green! I'd say Green on his own demands a pick between 18-25.

No way. Green on his own would just about warrant pick 22 from port. Why trade away another top 40 pick just to go up another 6 picks and be one draft pick down?

Mind you I'd still like us to keep Green.

Well, if you could get pick 22 for Green without the addition of a pick, sure. That would be preferred.

exactly

but some people on here have said green isn't worth a top 20 draft pick by himself!!!

so i'd take a top 20 pick if we had to get rid of 35. we'd then have 1,16,17,19- preferably a lower pick than 16 would help us. and trading guys like bell for top 40 pick

Several clubs are reported to be keen on Brad Green. However, the only club they mentioned (Port Adelaide) gets my tail up!

Package him with an Aaron Davey or Green, Bell and Pick 19 and I believe that will get us Pick 4.

Brent Prismall is almost certain to move and is likely to be a Demon. Reported we will offer him 3 years. Kangaroos the only other club to be keen in his services.

Richmond is likely to give West Coast a 2nd round pick for Seaby. Thats good news. I hope we dont get him!

O'keefe is favoured to go to Essendon. Sydney likely too land Lovett, but also keen on Stanton.

I'm hearing whispers out of Carlton that Andrew Walker is being put up for trade. Don't know what he would warrant

a mate of mine who's dad is on the carlton board said that today- dono if anyone would take him? is he any good-can't say i've seen too many carlton games past 2 years- tend not to watch them!

My info came from the same sort of position.

I asked my friend what he would want? He said late first round draft pick!

I said if someone offers that, sign very quickly.

he's not a bad player and pretty young still... worth pick 17 or 19 maybe?

Could even end up with

Pick 17 to Freo

Warnock to Carlton

Walker to the Dees

if we resign ourselves to the fact Warnock will find a way to end up at the Blues, then i could see this happening

Not that high, too much younger talent at that level.

Another star graduate from the Class of 2003!.

If Carlton are seeking to build for a challenge for a flag in the next couple of years, why would they be trading a 23yo with 5 years experience who was their PP (No 2 pick) in 2003? Because he is.....

Aside from Cooney, the 2003 draft is the most underwhelming basket of talent in years. I hope this year's crop is better than that and MFC draft some stars...or at least one!

Posted

This is one of those ones where I just can't seem to see why everyone gets so excited.

Picks 1, 17 and 19 are off the table unless we get an upgrade for them... And Carlton would want one of those picks in a straight swap.

Only a big, multi-club deal would make it work. For mine....

I'm all for us being aggressive, but I have this awful feeling the demons will overdo it at the trade table and come out second best in a deal or two.

Pick 17 for Walker? You're kidding, right? Walker is a hack, and plays less than Rivers too. And you can see us giving up pick 17 for him...

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
