Why bring in technology if that technology can't be used as originally intended.  Now it's about when you use a review and when you don't use a review.

Again,  not the original concept.  We still have howlers.  In a World cup final.

Rub of the green worked better ... the whole LBW technology ruling is all over the place.  The same result can be out or not out depending on reviews or whether the appeal was given out or not out originally.  We're back to where we started from.

I totally agree Macca, it was bought in to eliminate howlers. And there we have an incorrect decision for everyone to see and theres nothing anyone can do about it because of another rule. Laughable.

Still Roy cant stand there and argue with an umpires decision, its not all about him and its just not cricket. The broadcasters had to apologize for his foul language. He was fined 30% of his match fee.

I didn't see it Wadda but you can't be behaving like that after a dismissal ... it's just not cricket!

Looking at how the match is panning out you'd reckon the Kiwis are going to have to get to 250 at least.  But at 5-186 after 42 overs they'll do well to get to that figure.

New Zealand's bowling has been very good throughout the tournament so you never know.

It was a really bad one, had his arms out wide signalling a wide. They were also so far in front it was never going to make any difference, he just wanted to get 100 in a WC final. It was actually uncomfortable to watch. Even Mark Taylor and Ian Healy were gobsmaked and both remarked that in their day they would not have gotten away with that. How times have changed.

I find it pretty amazing it was more or less the same 10 years ago with Federer and Djokovic playing in finals and Serena playing in the women's. Certainly an age to remember.

Barracking for Kiwi's last night was like barracking for Melbourne. Zero luck and everything worked against them even when they played largely the better cricket. Should have won, but didn't and were just dead stiff!

Super over should be with your batsmen left (poms were all out) and as for the most 4's thats like deciding a drawn GF by who had the most shots at goal? Totally irrelevant to who is the better team!! Stayed up to 5am to watch the rotten poms and Jerkovich win. Really wish I had of gone to bed at 10pm as they will both be nightmares to add to the recurring 87 Prelim, 88 GF, 90 1st Semi, 98 Prelim, 2000 Gf, 2002 SF, 2019 Prelim flashbacks!!

What a cracking match, the standard of fielding (and catching in particular) was excellent. I Really feel for the Kiwi's today.  Three crucial moments.  The first was Guptil referring his LBW, I get that he didn't want to be out, but Ross Taylor would surely have reviewed his LBW (and survived) if Guptil hadn't burnt that decision.  The next was when Boult caught Stokes on the boundary, but didn't instinctively throw the ball back.  If he'd done this - they win.  The last was the boundary off Stokes bat as he dives for the line.  That's just terrible luck and absolutely nothing you can do about it.  

I'm still at odds with how I feel about the technology and referrals.  How accurate is Hawkey, does anyone know? (particularly when it comes to spinners) The referrals were brought in to eliminate the obvious howlers, yet players will let the match situation or their egos decide when to review... the game is definitely not the same.

Anyway bring on the Ashes.

Re the technology ... I don't trust ball tracking but might prefer it if more than half the ball was hitting the stumps for an LBW appeal to be upheld.  Anything less than that and I'm not satisfied.  But that's just me.

As for the reviews and the howlers ... the only way to get it close to 100% right might be to review every appeal - which creates another issue of course.  Unintended consequences kicks in.  But they (the ICC) should at least be able to find a better way.  But it's the ICC we're talking about!

Bottom line - Taylor wasn't out.  And it's a World cup final and Taylor is a gun batsman.  But I don't have a problem with the umpire giving Taylor out ... like many,  he probably thought it was out and has to make a quick decision.

Heres my problem:

"The law states: "If the boundary results from an overthrow or from the wilful act of a fielder, the runs scored shall be any runs for penalties awarded to either side, and the allowance for the boundary, and the runs completed by the batsmen, together with the run in progress if they had already crossed at the instant of the throw or act."

The batsman Stokes and (the other one) had not crossed when Guptill picked up the ball and threw it from the boundary.

It should have been 5 runs awarded to the batting side and not 6. The umpires (after much deliberation) clearly got it wrong.

Yeah that was a questionable decision but the umpire might have thought that Stokes had completed the 2nd run.  Again,  he has to make a quick decision. 

To be honest,  I much preferred the days when we just accepted the umpires decision and got on with it. The rub of the green.

But I have never been one to question umpiring decisions so I prefer to take the good with the bad and wear the odd bad decision.

Well its more when the batsman cross before the fielder has released the ball is the correct interpretation of the rule. They didnt know the rule to begin with or didnt fully understand it, which for a World Cup umpire who is paid to get it right is quite unbelievable. That rule has not changed since last century. Mind you none of the commentators Taylor and Healy included pointed it out.

I have no problem with umpires decisions as it always evens out over a game. This was different. If they dont know all the laws of the game then they cannot be called umpires. The only correct decision is the match should be replayed.

I agree with your stance on LBW.

There is a difference between a bad umpiring decision and an umpire who doesnt fully understand the rules i think. Just my 2c worth anyway.

They won't be replaying the match Wadda as the World cup just returned home!  The Poms might be all about fair play but there are limits! 

Deciding the World cup by the most amount of boundaries is high farce.  Who thinks of these things?  Laughable really.

Yeah ... was talking to a few people today and they couldn't fathom why they would schedule all 3 at the same time on the same day.   Plus,  the 'Tour' was on as well so there was a feast of sport. 

There's probably a dozen world-wide sporting events that need to be watched uninterrupted and the Cricket World Cup & Wimbledon are 2 such events for many people.  There's a point of difference with the FI's & Cycling but events such as the GF,  State of Origin,  Boxing day cricket and such like need singular attention.

The Open Championship (Golf) is another and that will get most of my attention next weekend.

Agree, either they believe in the technology and have it available at all times or just ditch it. Cricket unlike footy doesn't lose anything for the slight delay while determining decisions. BTW Roy looked Plumb first ball and the tracking said all bar 10 mill of the ball was hitting the stumps so umpires call. They really had zero luck and still only lost because of a bizarre rule that says nothing about cricket technique or skills.

Time for us to cane them in the ashes.

You see....i completely forgot about the tour! And then there is the aftermath of the footy to deal with as well. I need to start clocking on and clocking off Macca! I kinda thought there would be a bit of a lul over winter, but its been bigger than Jesus !

June/July are huge in terms of Overseas sport and then the EPL starts up in less than a month.  The NFL not long after.  Spring Carnival and then the home tests vs Pakistan & New Zealand.

Until then we've got 2 more weeks of the Tour de France,  British Open Golf and our Demons might even win a game or 2!  I'm a bit of a fan of Rugby League these days so there's that too.  Rugby Union World cup in September.  Champions League?

Oh ... and a little urn gets played for kicking off in just over 2 weeks!

Add in the NBA that starts in October that absolutely renewed my interest last month with the footy being poor. A new era of teams with 2 superstars each. Kawhi & George, Lebron and Anthony Davis, Harden & Westbrook, Curry & Klay, Irving & Durant, Maybe even Butler & Chris Paul. Then Simmons, Giannis etc etc. Huge season.

I'm confused as to why cricketers have to be prudent with reviews? Are the ICC worried they won't get to bed by 9 because players will review every wicket? Does the ICC need to save money on electricity bills by limiting the amount of hawkeye usage? Is it all related to scarcity of resources? ?

I so want to beat them in the Ashes this year now after that. Im not sure we have the team but beating India in India recently gives me some sort of confidence that the talent is there somehow. If im lucky and things go right, i may even get over for a match. Blasting off in Briton Macca!

 

Isnt there a Basketball World Cup coming up somewhere? There should be if there isnt!
