Crowd support for the Demons

One of the many disappointing features of last Saturday was the lack of noise from the Melbourne  supporters.

The small number of Port supporters managed to make more noise than us. I know it can be argued that they had more to yell about than us, but where was the encouragement from our supporters when we still had a chance to steal the game?

If Collingwood or Richmond came out after the three quarter time huddle behind, but in striking distance, there would be a huge roar from ther crowd .Even more so in Perth and Adelaide for their home side. But not us......if you yell out “ come on Demons”...( or something more original!), people look at you, as if you’re disturbing the peace. The only time we have a home ground advantage is on the MCG in the finals,when all the Demon supporters turn up and get excited. The players respond.    It’s human nature!

I too thought the same during the game, I don’t even remember a Melbourne chant by the cheer squad...

But tbh I’m usually pretty quiet at games.

Didn't come over much on TV.

I thought our support since Roosy has come had gone up many decibels.

Many might have been out of breath getting there because of the trains.!

Lets get 70,000 plus on Friday week and be rowdy because the Bomber fans will be!

They had every right to be.  At the game we thought we couldn't believe the performance we were seeing and although engrossed in the game spent the time discussing whats going wrong rather than mindless cheering

It was an average performance after an uninspiring pre-season. Interstate supporters tend to be wordy if their team is winning away from home.

Hard to get excited with that dross.  Watching us miss easy marks, get left flat footed, kick to opposition defenders time and again?  Not score for a whole quarter?

I completely agree. I can never hear our cheer squad and our members in the pockets were very quiet. The MCC were up and about at times, but not enough. It was certainly a horrible way to start the year after all the talk over the off season of making the MCG a cauldron (NO) and winning the flag (with that sort of performance - NO).

Good post! I had an excuse that I had spent half time preparing cheese board and didnt want it to spill. I did manage to clap my fingers together, one handed.

Speaking personally, I was suffering from the heat. Just walking into the MCG was a drain. Football is a Winter sport for goodness sake. Stupid global warming. Then the shock of seeing the players slipping over and dropping the ball, not holding marks etc stunned everyone into silence. Agree the supporters and the cheer squad were quiet overall. Perhaps they were busy slurping Zooper Doopers.

Port Adelaide and Fremantle have the loudest cheer squads of the Inter State Teams that come to the MCG. I was in the Cheer Squad and that was my experience anyway. We should have been louder but I feel many of our fans only really get up for the big games against Victorian Teams.

The first quarter was just developing .

2nd Quarter was shock

3rd Quarter disbelief and sporadic attempts to rouse some action after good passages was limited and received no acknowledgement through performance 

final quarter I was as exhausted as players from emotion only and certainly had no reason for sustained volume support

Apart from the first 15 minutes, there was SFA to cheer about.

I reckon most were gob-smacked with how unfit our entire team is. Then there’s the OMAC and Frost debacle, Viney and Gawn’s very poor form, followed by the worst dropped mark in AFL history. Any cheering last Saturday should’ve only been ironic.

Seriously, what did we do for 6 months? Coaches and playing group must have listened to all the press and didn’t think training intensity to be that important?

I hope Goody plucked his head out of the sand long enough to send an absolute rocket up the playing group.

Whose fight, our fight? On Saturday’s performance it was like a toddler up against an MMA fighter.

There bloody well better be a response from the playing group this Saturday night.

Stick Petracca on Jenny Craig and a treadmill, feed the rest concrete so they can all harden the phark up

This is what happens when you promote AFL as an entertainment product rather than a sporting contest. People go along for the "event" rather than because they care about the team. They are too busy tweeting their mates and posting on instagram to actually get involved in what is happening on the field.

I would guess we have roughly 10K members who are passionate and turn up each week, a lot of whom still don't make a lot of noise. The rest are just along for the ride. Any Port fans who turned up are clearly in the top 5% of the club's most passionate supporters, so you would expect them to make plenty of noise.

I sat about 15m away from our cheers squad and I must say they were very subdued for most of the game.

Im quite a vocal guy at the footy and the number of people I had looking at me strangely every time I dared to call out in support or anguish at what was unfolding in front of us, was quite strange I thought.

Perhaps it was just that my 6month son was wearing his pants on his head (to keep the sun off his little noggin) and looking a bit like a jester?

In the first 15 minutes the crowd support was building but after that it was very deflating to see the rubbish being played on the ground. Very hard to get excited over a slow, listless and mistake ridden team. No energy no enthusiasm spread to the Demon crowd. 

I started watching from the MCC balcony, which was a mistake as you are detached and folks are more concerned about heading to the long room for refreshments and ensuring they observed the protocol of having a seat ticket, a bit like going to the Opera.

And frustratingly, no-one says anything !

Its as if barracking on the balcony is frowned upon. Frowns came my way when I voiced support for the team and also my anguish.  Went down to the bottom deck hoping to reboot my enthusiasm levels only to find the same mute Demon crowd. Not even the angry cries of "your hopeless.......""  Although in fairness, it was difficult to discern which one of the 20 hopeless players to abuse.  

At the end of the day, my main disappointment was how the Club had blown a great opportunity to encourage Demon supporters through the gates. On the train coming in and on the walk-in to the G, I felt buoyed by the large number of Demon fans and their palpable anticipation and excitement. All those fans decked out in the colours who had made the long journey from country towns to watch their side. It reminded me of the feeling before the two finals games. A feeling that we finally had a footy team to be proud of and one we could anticipate winning.  Looking forward to singing the song before and after the game. 

Alas 30 minutes later that energy and enthusiasm had evaporated, and, after the brief exhilaration of the two finals, it was like a return to "here we go again."  .

Agree,  apart from the first 20 mins,  the rest of the performance was disgraceful and I reckon we were in shock and could not believe what we were seeing. 

I recall incredible noise at the first semi in particular. When the team is giving their best the crowd will reciprocate.

At the risk of disagreeing to this forum the very nature of the title "CROWD SUPPORT fir the Demons" seems to indicate that if we attend aDemons game as the crowd then we are there to support our players and heroes of the  Club. ie it really isn't negotiable.

All the posts here are watery and weak plus conditional excuses of the lack of noise ie support for the Dees on Round1.

Blaming it in The Demon Army!

The reality of it was we were within 10 points had hit the front and then lost it just before 3/4 time.

In the first 10 mins of the final quarter when the team urgently needed our support it wasn't there in noise.

We had chances and when Jonesy fumbled that mark ( others have done that since ie Track and ANB ) the dam wall broke and  it was all over.

Fans have hyped up and joined with the wallets (6,000 more members as at Round 1 and record membership) but we need not go into our shells because things are not exactly going our way.

I don't think the players are not trying but I do think some are not fully recovered and match fit from pre-season ops and training and the sheer weight of these plus  new season injuries has left us lacking ready made talent and depth to start the season in peak shape.

Also our game plans are not looking updated to take in fir the new rules in 2019. Coaches have been far too slow to adapt.

Additionally some players are below the form that took us to 16 wins and Finals last year. Eg ANB Oscar Frosty Nev Hibbo Tommy and others do we are not performing well at either end of the ground.

The reaction by some in 3 games is "Same Old Melbourne" now down and out and bottom of the ladder, and I can't support that because we should be unbeaten and top. No thought about any facts or consideration of effects and reasons why.

Support is needed more than ever now and ONE win can solve our form and produce done if the 2nd quarter magic that gave us a chance against the Bombers. 

We can win vs Swanson's  let's all get there against the Saints make them pay he'll as 35,000 of us get the team over the line. Don't wait fir them to ignite the flame let's light it ourselves and reap the benefits.

2 out of 3 and we will be ready full on and vocal fir the Tigers on Anzac Eve.
