Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

    Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

    Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

    We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

    However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

    The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

    Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

    We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

    WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

    Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

POSTGAME: JLT 02 vs Brisbane

I'm checking out for 10 days... The overreacting on here is embarrassing.

JLT means nothing, I have no less confidence in us then I did 2 weeks ago.

We'll romp Port in 14 days time

I hope the coaches are thinking differently. There are issues that need addressing after 2 JLT hitouts. We thought 666 would favour our clearance dominance but we have been towelled up in the centre in both games. If we don’t win the clearances we usually don’t win the game.

The foreword setup is struggling but that has much to do with delivery which has been horrendous. No forward 50 pressure, no forward crummers and a backline that has leaked 100 points plus twice but understandable given the 60 plus entries in each game.

Yes no need to panic but there is a lot of work to be done.

Positives - J Smith who managed 4 largely on one leg and according to some with no football IQ!  Add Nev, Max. Thought May had some very clean possessions down back. Clarrie and Gus were good.

Smith, Petracca and Fritsch all played out the game so surely their injuries arn't too serious. Was particually impressed with Smith today with which I am hoping is a bad corky or something similar, showed a lot.

Hopng that an ice bath and some therapy will make Joel S the running man that he is.

Goodwin has said that Harmes will definitely be right to go for Round 1.  Just a dislocation that pierced the skin.  Fritsch and Joel Smith will be fine as well, JKH out for a while but not ACL.

A disclocation that breaks the skin, and Mr Ed was a real talking horse.

If May escapes suspension then it's pretty much a dream prognosis for the walking wounded. JKH looked liked an ACL or broken tibia live - just bone bruising. Harmes has gone from 6+ weeks out (Demonland prognosis at the time) to a certain starter for Round 1.

I'd happily trade a 7 point loss for the form Joel Smith showed today but the ease in which Brisbane moved the ball worried me a fair bit.

I'm a Joel Smith fan, have been a long time, he's too good an athlete and hard/skilled/clean enough to make a good player in the right role and with the right coaching.

But I'm not sure about the so called great form. He snapped a goal from a crumb that looked more good luck than good management. He got a soft free kick. He snuck on the end of one late after initial leading back towards goal. His best goal was the beautiful give and get run from the wing and finish on the run. It was a long way from 4 outstanding goals and as good as his best stuff was he got in the road a lot as well.

I like him as a player but absolutely not as a goal square option even if he kicked 4 today. Has to be up the ground using his tank and speed. I expect he'll play round 1 because we don't have a lot of better options right now.

He could settle in to a more permanent spot or he could be back at Casey and be training with the defenders again in a matter of weeks. Against the right team he should be thrown in the ruck for a bit as well if we need to get a bit more ground pressure and try something.

Injuries and inflated egos are our biggest worries.  It does not just happen.  Warning signs.

I'd prefer those warning sign to be going off now prior to the start of the season, as opposed to during it.

Hopefully it gives the playing group the kick up the backside that will get them back in to hunger mode.

You can't win finals or dare we dream it a GF in the first few months, but you can sure as hell can lose one.

Hopefully Goody has got them in the right frame of mind come season proper.

Hi DV8. My Melbourne overseas membership gives me the games on the Watch AFL app. It doesn't work within Australia, but I get every match of the season live, or on demand if i choose. Plus all the Fox Footy shows like AFL360 and On The Couch. It's fantastic for expats.

Odd response. Compound dislocations happen. And why would Goodwin lie?

To put things in perspective - the Tigers are currently 7 goals down at half time in their game against Hawthorn.  You think that changes anything for them going forward?  Of course not.

We'll be fine.

Seeing the wood is sometimes shrouded by the trees, we all need to take a look at our football for this coming season and so far, it does not look as encouraging as we might think. Sure, we have great players but in the JLT we have lacked purpose and initiative as if the game '...doesn't really matter...', as well. Interrupted pre-season or not, we run around like chooks trying to cluck without a head. A professional athlete as part of a team of professionals is expected to display great skills more frequently than we have, and the pre-season is not an excuse. We have done far better in the past and in recent history with far lesser teams. The casualisation of the game must not encroach. It really matters and it matters NOW!

That was pretty terrible. The result doesn't worry me, but the way we played does. To summarise:

  • Our disposal was horrible all game. Even short chip passes under no pressure were off-target;
  • For a side that's  supposed to be all about contested football we were badly shown up in those areas;
  • We repeatedly saw players decline to give the obvious pass and go themselves, only to be caught;
  • Even when passes hit their mark, we fumbled;
  • We persist with pointless bombs to the hot spot;
  • Brisbane worked much harder;
  • Our tall forwards don't take contested marks. Theirs do;

On the bright side, AVB, Brayshaw and Oliver are loking ok and we didn't miss the easy set shots as we used to.

Also, JKH's injury looked nasty.

Last year Fritsch moving to a wing (then half back), Spargo to half forward, Frost in to the side and Vanders back took us from flat track bullies to a side capable of playing footy good enough to win a couple of finals, smash the Giants and beat a depleted Eagles in Perth.

I'm very concerned with a few spots in the side right now. The good news is there's a few obvious guys that might go a long way to fixing some of them.
Inside 50 kicking and forward line spreading out - Melksham
Intercept marking defender - Lever/Petty
Clearance pace and bite - Viney
Half back/wing skill - Kade Kolodjashnij

There's others that have me wondering if we've got what it takes as well:
Half back speed - KK, Hunt? J Smith? Frost?
Midfield pace - Baker
Forward line crumb and chase - Chandler, Bedford, Garlett?

Can't rely of kids to do what Fritsch and Spargo did last year and not all season - both were feeling it by the end of a long year, but there's options if we need to look at something different to change the make up of the team.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

    The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
