Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Our skills were terrible and they killed us out of the middle. We need a small crumbing player down forward.  Don't think spargo fits that bill and having Garlett injured could be a worry but his performances have always been inconsistant. Let us hope Harmes is ok.

What happened to Harmes?

i missed it.

Reportedly a compound fracture to a finger. Hoping it's not serious and he'll be fine early season, but is one of those weird type of injuries that can wind up being 8 weeks.

Pre season mate, calm down.

If were 5 weeks in & we’re still playing like this then we can really worry.

I have no doubt you’ll be laughing at how worried you got from these results.

We are obviously going to get slaughtered on the outside by quick teams with our current team, but the interesting part to me is that teams that beat us somehow take away our strength. Our main strength is contested ball and clearances, yet Brisbane had 10+ more clearances than us today. West Coast, Hawthorn and Collingwood did it to us last year too. If teams work out a way to take away that strength, we're cooked because our outside game is poor.

I cant believe I was looking forward to that so much. I'm so happy that preseason is essentially over. Bring on the real stuff.

I've been around long enough now to know that preseason form doesnt really prove much but it would have been nice to have a young player really stand up and show something which I thought didn't happen this year. Any win we get early this season will be fantastic as the boys haven't looked great early.

I'm still impressed with Brisbane. They have recruited well and have some truly excellent young talent coming through. They are probably a few years behind where we are right now but they will be a hard team to beat this year and personally I will be watching most of their games. They will be one of our main nemesis over the next decade.

As long as JKH never dons a melbourne Jumper, I will be happy.

Pretty poor form here considering he went down today and if it's a serious injury could really jeopardize a young guys career.

No one mentioning Tom MAC. Completely out of form atm. Don’t know how many marks he dropped but had no influence at all.

Our forward entries to be fair were terrible and our disposal is still my major worry,  along with a lack of pace.

On a positive note we lose by 7 points with a stack of injuries, some players playing their first practice game, several regulars out and a generally poor game by the team, also not helped by about 6 goals from frees to the Lions.

I'd prefer we win than lose but perspective is important here.

A win here was more important for Brisbane than it was for us. That being said, there are plenty of areas to work on.

1) Forward line delivery: Weed is constantly contesting and crashing packs. However, the positions he is getting the ball delivered to him in weren't great. We still have an issue with tempo football where everything needs to be smashed into the 50 at a million miles an hour. Sometimes, it's best to take that extra kick to move the distance from 55 meters out to 45 with a slight improvement of angle if possible.

2) An x factor crumbing forward: God bless Spargo, but he is more a pressure forward than a bloke who collects the spillage and makes something out of a half chance. If we insist on playing the way we did today (kicking to a pack contest), we need a Jeffy type to collect at ground level.

3) Quality of tackling: We fronted the opposition 9 times out of 10 and had men on them. However, the intensity of those defensive efforts wavered at times. When we got back in the second, not only were we tackling but they were finding that they were unable to do anything with the pill as a) their arms were pinned b) they had been spun around the wrong way and c) all outlets had been cut off.

Positives were Clarry, Nev and Gus. Keilty showed a bit in that he seemed relatively composed and pretty well built for someone his age. Joel Smith was good too until he did his leg.

May seems a bit lost for mine. I'm guessing that he needs an adjustment period like Jake Lever had last year. Hore didn't seem ready for mine (odd considering his background). Tommy Mc seemed a bit laissez-faire about it all but he is coming up to his 9th year so probably knows the relative significance of our season losses.

A lot to work on nonetheless. I hope that the boys will have their heads screwed on for round one.

2nd quarter was good footy, the hope is that's more of what we can do.

Unfortunately the same errors over and over again are not helping my confidence.

How many times can we spoil each others marks, over run contests and bomb the ball in forward?

Brisbane replaced their injured ruck and played 3 fresh players to use a full 26, we lost 2 and had 2 more hobbling from our 23, so the scoreboard result which flattered us is somewhat ok.

But it's going to take some serious coaching to fix some big errors in the game and we'll be going in to round 1 with some personnel that don't fill me with confidence.

Backline:
May - ok start considering, hopefully not suspended
Salem - just ok
Hibberd - up and down
Jetta - very solid
Lewis - some good but he still [censored] himself and offers little defensively, another slow player
-------------------------------------------------
Oscar - awful, slow to defend, slow to attack, chest marks the ball from the ground which makes him easy to tackle, loses his feet
Hore - not up with the pace of the game

Mids:
Gawn - very good
Oliver - not his best but whatever
Gus - has to find his kicking range
Petracca - excellent first half, where's the second?
Vanders - scrappy
Fritsch - some good then injured
--------------------------------
Harmes - injured
Stretch - slow to make decisions and his wobbly ball drop really hurts his kicking and rhythm with the ball, isn't a fluent player. Nope

Forwards:
Weid: Did ok
Tommy - scrappy but give him time
Spargo - some nice things but not his best
----------------------------------------------------
ANB - a long way from his best with fumbles, not holding tackles and even been slow to chase at times
Hunt - I can see why they tried it but a hot start obscured some ordinary play
J Smith: 4 goals flattered him, some ok efforts up the ground but too many errors leaping for the ball
JKH - injured
Keilty - better in the ruck but nothing stood out forward

Viney, Jones and Melksham should help but we'll still be going in to round 1 with a number of players we can't be sure of and with doubts about the outside run and quality in the forward line.

No one to crumb the ball when the ball hits the ground is my biggest concern.

Brisbane just walked it out with ease.

Lord Nev was a real standout. Also happy with Joel Smith and Hunt is showing signs. We really missed Harmes when he went off. May also was good for his first hit out. This might not be popular but I thought ANB was much improved from last week. Vanders needs to stop getting caught holding the ball.

Here's the Steven May incident. I think he could be in trouble.

He's absolutely entitled to bump in that situation, he's within 5m of the ball, in play and Berry has had plenty of time to dispose of the ball. It all comes down to whether his shoulder made contact with jaw and no camera angle is likely to be conclusive. That camera angle sure isn't.

The young man Jarrod Berry from the Lions is a good country kid who should do the right thing and tell the tribunal (if it comes to that) that all contact was to the body and the contact with the ground caused the groggy feeling.

Joel Smith has been our most productive forward of the 3 games. And getting better. He did some great things today, and is the sole ‘find’ of the preseason. Otherwise we have too many lacking form or injured. For the JKH knockers, he was in our best both last week and v Collingwood. On that form he would have played round 1. We are in trouble defensively (both Tigers and Lions scored 100+ against us) and are going to be very underwhelming early season.

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
