Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Most Heartwarming Win?

Reading through some of our most heartbreaking losses really got me down with reliving the memories.

So stuff that, let's hear some of our greatest wins.

For me there are a number of memorable wins. 2000 QF against the Blues, 2000 PF smashing the Roos and knowing we're heading into a granny, 2006 EF, obviously the Weagles win and then subsequent GWS demolition where we could celebrate making the finals for the first time in 12 years among fellow Demon tragics, last years EF & SF.

But the one that takes the cake for me has to be our first win in 2008 after being down by 50+ points at half time and 30+ points at 3/4 time against the Dockers. There were few supporters there that day, but wow we made some noise (when James McDonald kicked a long kick forward out of the centre to bronx cheers was memorable that day too).

For me it's in no particular order.

Rd 22 1987 out at the Western Oval that got us into the final. The win and listening to the wirelesses of people around us to hear the scores from the Geelong vs Hawthorn game and the roar when the siren went at that game and the fairytale nature of Doing it for Robbie.

The next two weeks being the EF and the QF were special too. The PF as noted in the other thread holds number 1 spot for the most devastating loss.

The Preliminary final in 88 was special because not only did we make the Grand Final but all my school mates were Carlton supporters and I couldn't wait to get to school on Monday.

Our other Prelim win in 00 is special because  from half time I was pretty confident that we were going to be playing in the Granny despite me usually never being comfortable until the final siren sounds.

The 2000 QF was the best wins for me.

I can remember having the radio on the way to the game and they had Greg williams flapping his big mouth about, what he said p#$$*% me off so much, he was so cocky and said we should thrash this mob by 6 goals, and how they were the better team.?

When they were in front and we came back it made it the best match ever?

I imagine many people of my age would struggle to go past Rnd 22, 1987 as the feel good game. Closely followed by the first final and then the next

I was there that day & I have never seen a game with supporters hanging out of trees & standing on walls to get a glimpse of the action. Full of drama & all hanging on the Hawks v Geelong game.....amazing!

Great thread. I go to the games with my 13 yo boy, and over the years really get a kick out of his reactions when we get up.

My top three on this basis:

1. 2018 Geelong final - Mitch strolling past us into the forward pocket to ice the game. Huge noise from the crowd (I teared up when I saw my boy's reaction).

2. QB 2017 - similarly, Jack Watts strolling past us into the forward pocket to ice the game. Huge noise behind us from the Punt Rd end (I'll never forget that one).

3. Me and my boy went to Gold Coast for a boy's weekend in 2016, we kicked 16 goals in the second half even though it was close at half time. I can't remember us ever kicking 16 goals in a half. Great weekend away.

Round 22 1987 will always be a special one, as were the next 2 weeks.

QF ‘94 Beating Carlscum. We were rank outsiders.

2000 QF Beating those arrogant [censored] again, after Arron Hammil knocked himself out.

But the Home and Away game i always love was

1990 Windy Hill

Beating Essendrug

Darren Bennett kicking post high goals in the last Quarter and taking a huge mark over Van der Haar

getting out of that dump was scary

I must add last years Final against Jeelong

It was a a very special night

but i was too stressed to enjoy most of it. I had to go for a walk in the 2nd Q, we just couldn’t score!!!

All the obvious ones come to mind such as 1987, QF 2000, but three less obvious ones were the come from behind win versus the Doggies in 2005 to seal a finals birth (Jeff White), 1998 versus WCE in Perth (where we had half the team out) and the come from behind win over Freo when we were a basket case.

For personal reasons - the win in Round 1 1976 vs North at Arden street after they unfurled their first flag. First time my brother and I were allowed to go to an away game on our own. He was 14 and I was 8 - boy have times changed!

Now I have 4 teenagers who had put up with a life time of misery as Demons in a non-Demon area (Bendigo). The joy my youngest (a 14 year girl) had on her face when Mitch Hannan kicked the goal versus Geelong (we were right behind him) turned me into a blubbering mess for the rest of the game!

I've been there for a lot of good games but in recent times: Round 20 in 2016 - we finally beat Hawthorn.

I think I watched that replay more than a dozen times.

It was the first time that I could see what we were building was actually going to work.

Gawn was great that day as was Viney.

Final home and away Rd Vs Footscray 87 will stick with me for life.  As a 9 yo, I don't think I fully realized the significance of the moment at the time, apart from it was most likely going to be our best and my favorite player Robbie's  last game and the very remote chance of us making the finals that my dad explained was a possibility, but that I don't think he really believed as a probable outcome in his heart.  Still vividly remember being up the back of the standing room behind the goals at one end, up against the corrugated iron fence as we came from behind and ran over the top of the doggies.  Then the euphoria of the other Melbourne supporters as the score from the other games started swinging our way and we had made it.

Preliminary final the next year in 1988 convincingly beating Carlton out at Waverly and that elusive premiership seemingly within our grasp.  The best rendition of it's a grand old flag in the grandstands with my fellow supporters that I can ever personally recall and then my dad turning to me and our fellow Demons supporters and exclaiming "what's even better is thay we did it against F@$#ing Carlton!"

Asides from those, the home and away victory against West Coast in Perth was bloody magic and I can still feel myself standing up and fist pumping the sky after Dean Kent slotted through that long bomb to seal it.

Hopefully the most memorable and enjoyable Demons win for me yet is soon to come.

GO THE MIGHTY DEMONS!!!

All time (for a bloke born 1970):

87 Rd22 Defeating Footscray

94 QF Schwarz+others Beating Carlton

00 QF smashing Carlton

Special mention the come back against the Dockers.

When you could believe in a future:

Melbourne winning in Geelong in 2015

Melbourne winning against Hawks in 2016.

When you knew we had arrived:

Melbourne EF in 2018. Looked like the scariest side in the comp.

we are a finals winning side, built to smash teams, this year we will be devastating to others.

Just watching the replay of the famous 2014 win in Adelaide, by 3 Points, the first year of the Roos regime. There are 6 players still on our list: Viney, Jones, T.McDonald, Salem and Kennedy- Harris and Jetta. That's a BIG turnaround...

Loved that 94 final against Carlton.  Asides from Schwarz, I remember Martin Pike, Garry Lyon cutting loose in either that game and/or the Final the previous week against the Bulldogs (and do I recall Billy Bennett playing a role in one of those games?  Or was it Jackovich? soo many gun forwards in that era, if only we could have kept them all on the park more often together).

Geelong 2015 was also particularly enjoyable, because I/we had been heartbroken in the dying seconds of the game the week before when Montagna had stolen defeat from the jaws of victory for us.  Hawthorn 2016 so great due to their previously unbeaten streak of a number of weeks, top spot on the ladder at the time and all the talk of another Hawthorn premiership in the making.  In retrospect, our victory against them unveiled their cloak of invincibility and they have been on a downwards spiral on the same time as we have been on the acent - long may those trends continue.

There were probably more home and away wins in the 90s that were memorable  (beating Collingwood and Hawthorn when it happened were always very enjoyable), but I don't have distinctive game that are comming to mind.

A couple of the out of the blue wins that kept us going when we were down and out in the depths of the Bailey/Neild era both against the Bombers were pretty stirring and provided some much needed glimpses of joy in otherwise bleak seasons.  We seemed to have to wood on Essendon in that period.  The earlier one was the game when Colin Garland kicked a bag of four goals or so to get us over the line and the second was the one where Kent broke loose down the wing and it ended up with Salem who cooly slotted through a high pressure goal in the dying minutes from about 35m out, to give us back the lead.  However, I think the more forgotten about that time, the better really - a glorious new era is upon us.

2000 QF final against the Blues for me.

So many players without impact for 3 quarters and up step 2 unlikely heroes in the final quarter. Probably the biggest buzz I’ve experienced for an entire quarter. Sat in a Carlton section that day and boy were their fans giving it to us at three quarter time. The look on their faces after the final siren will never be forgotten. We just smiled at them as they made their way out in misery.

Will never ever get sick of watching the replay of that last quarter and Commeti’s commentary, “ Bruce an unlikely hero, the rookie, the rookie.”

So many there, but one special game that comes to mind is one that we lost. A few years ago we gained Burnie Vince. I still loved the way that we played when Dangerfield was taken for ‘a weekend at Burnies’, to the point where Danger was dragged and was visibly upset. I thought that particular game was a real turning point for our modern play-style. When the chips were down, we gained respect by showing a relentless style of play, all inspired by BV!

Not a win, but still burns in my memory and with a big smile ? made me proud!

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
