Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

So we'd be listening to a song about Those three days in September/October?  Sounds about right to me.  Would we have three public holidays as well?  Would they play the third even if it was a dead rubber?  Would they give medals to every player who played in any of the three games?  What would they do if a side sent their seconds over to Perth for match two to get an advantage in the third game back at home again?

No, no, no.

The song goes "ONE day in September..."

After waiting soo long, don't let them strip us of the dignity we deserve with the have success that is within our reach.

Don't let the accountants ruin our game and the glory we rightfully deserve in our due course.

I understand the arguments for it, particularly from the point of view if interstate sides, but it just feels wrong. It all builds to one single day at the MCG, it’s not a hidden fact it happens every year, you bring it that day (as West Coast did this year) or you don’t (Adelaide last year).

Putting it over three weeks begs certain questions for me:

- is it Home leg, Away leg, Neutral leg over the three matches?

- if a team has already won by the second game is the third match called off?

- not suggesting this happens but a tactic could be game one the away team decides to target critical players for game one to make them unavailable for the other 2 games?

I would also argue that if the two teams playing were Victorian it immediately makes the whole thing pointless. I also feel it loses the title “Grand Final”.

Can't agree with this.

I can understand why the Lions got shirty in 2004 for having to pay their home preliminary final at the G, but it is a pretty neutral venue these days.

That's sad for us as it was our fortress a very long time ago but there is little home ground advantage when tickets are allocated the way they are for grand finals.

I'd prefer a top 5, or 6 finalists.. and a best of 3 , or 5, Grand Final playoffs... rolling around the country.  of course playing in both contestants home states.

It would be good if the decider at least, was played at the McG.

Short up the finals series, and lengthen the playoffs.  This will give us the best of twilight playoffs, Night games and the traditional Day Grand Final.

Just the schedule would be less certain.   This will counteract the blowouts, like in 1988.

The scores could even be accumulating each match, until its definitive.

IF, in the AFL, we played each other once, the Finals Series could start in August... leaving September for the Play offs...  and for some S.O.Origin games, also.

think of the turnover

gil will be there counting
football's such a part of channel 7
they're hoping they'll go to ratings heaven

Its really about, in my mind, taking the game to the people... around the country.

I do not know whats in the AFL's minds.

I’m a definite no on the best of 3 grand finals, but my stance on the MCG only grannies has softened.  If grounds interstate can be brought up to standard (high capacity, facilities, etc) then it should change in the future.

Must say I tend to agree but perhaps with a twist. It's a national game and the GF should perhaps rotate. Two years out of four/five in Melbourne and one year out of four in either Adelaide or Perth. Brisbane and Sydney could be added if and when they have 60k plus stadiums.

It has become obvious that the interstate clubs were blindsided by the GF at the MCG for the next 40 years deal and the 3 GF is the way of amending the monopoly position the AFL has got themselves into.

One of the biggest problem with interstate GF's for home teams is that you don't really have the opportunity to preplan and book for attending.

Many of us would have loved to have been in Perth (well as it turned out I was glad I missed it) but the last minute nature of the fixture precludes it. Perhaps we play the prelims in Perth and Adelaide permanently and then the GF in Melbourne.

Not sure what is the right balance but I don't think we have it at present.

And on topic.... definitely no to a best of three finals system.

What would the fans prefer: 2 extra weeks for 2 teams or 2 extra weeks for every team during the season?

Heaven forbid....that could make the FIXture less of a fix and more of a draw....

Interesting take... the other way is to stretch the finals series itself and have less games each weekend.

As  said I'm not sure what the right answer is but the AFL certainly snookered itself with the 40 year MCG deal.

That's where at least as things sit now, the interstate teams have some certainty.   The game is at the G and they can plan towards attending it there if they think they will make it.  I wonder if the AFL and it's sponsors could even help soften the blow for the average punter by having an option to charter planes and/or pre-purchase seats on planes so that members could buy Grand Final tickets with plane tickets included at a fixed flat price, rather than inflated last minute prices.

The lesser stadium capacity at interstate venues is also a huge issue.  Huge loss of income for the league as they couldn't pre allocate as many tickets to the corporates etc.  As I understand it, there were also very limited seats available for MFC members/supporters at Perth Stadium that fateful final this year and we're that a grand final and I missed out, then I'd absolutely spew.

The Eagles CEO likes the idea.

It appears to have been first raised by Pyke after the Crows loss.  Maybe if they played better on the day he wouldn't have had a whinge.

I think this can work. First create 2 more expansion teams to make 20 and divide into 2 conferences of 10. New teams would be playing out of Dubbo and Kalgoorlie. Compromise the draft for the next 5 years with priority picks for the Dubbo Quolls and the Kalgoorlie Miners.

Each conference plays each other twice, to get 18 rounds. Top 4 from each conference play off, 1 v 4, 2 v 3. Then winners play off to be conference champions. That’s 23 rounds, then we have a best of 3 AFL World Series Grandfinal playoff. Can’t go wrong with this formula surely!

Brilliant concept. IP it. Register the brands. Sit back and collect due rewards.

Of course that approach may discourage Gil etc from acting.

I wouldn't take it so seriously. People come up with stupid and unrealistic ideas all the time, it's just getting forced in to the spotlight right now because media outlets need to keep their website traffic ticking over in an otherwise completely boring off season so far.

This is the problem with the internet in general - it gives the soap box of a lifetime for people starved of attention.

This is getting plenty of media coverage for an idea which can’t happen, not in many of our lifetimes anyway. Didn’t government recently sign a long term deal to keep the grand final at the MCG?

I assume Sydney FC knows it won't happen. So, why are they promoting the idea? I can think of two reasons:

  1. As a diversion to distract from some other issue. I think this is unlikely.
  2. Because they actually want something else and this is just the ambit claim to get the ball rolling. So what is it they might want? I'll take a punt and say that all the interstate teams are going to (a) want a guarantee of more of their games in the home and away season played on the MCG or (b) to have more home games than away games during the home and away season to reduce the amount of times they have to travel and increase it for Melbourne-based clubs, or (c) both.

...another good reason why this stupidity should not be given oxygen.

Victorian side v WCE in the GF.

First final in Perth.  Victorian side send a 2nds team for the first game, knowing the next 2 are in Melbourne.

Who will be the first to be accused of "gaming the system"?

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
