Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Internal options for a speedy winger

Recommended Posts

We are all on the same page when it comes to our need for a speedy outside mid who uses the ball well.

It looks like Gaff is not coming, and KK is apprently more of a back flanker.

Is there any possibility of reinventing one of our players as an outside mid.

Hannan - Tackles well, very fast, ball use and decision making pretty good. if his fitness is good enough, he could turn into a quality outside runner

Fritsch - I think he may have played some games as a winger. I was surprised that we played tyson on the wing instead of fritsch in the prelim. A friend of mine suggested his fitness may not be good enough to run through the middle. If he has a big preseason, maybe he turns into a silky outsider. He's apparently very quick.

Hunt - A long shot, but if he has a huge preseason, and comes on in leaps and bounds its not out of the realms of possibility. His poor ball use may be problematic.

Garlett - The longest of long shots, but stranger things have happened. Would need to get his mental game right. But maybe he could play like lewis jetta.

Some nice food for thought here. I'd back Fritsch to become this player, although he may be 2 pre-seasons away from that I reckon. Can certainly see it happening though. Hannan is a maybe for mine, personally haven't watched him closely enough to decide whether he could be this player. Other two won't happen I wouldn't have thought.

Still have high hopes for Billy Stretch - he was on the point of a breakthrough before injury.

Agree on Stretch. I really liked what I saw from him in 2016, and like you said, he was having a great return to the senior side before injury.

Hope his foot is tracking OK!

Vote 1  - Oskar Baker

More broadly I don't want to see onepaced inside mids playing on the wing.

Agree 100% re don’t pension slow insiders to the wing

Baker hopefully will come on.

Fritsch, and Hannan have shown their ability to cope with senior AFL: with another preseason should develop the tank to play this role.

PS Billy Stretch should be like a new player if his foot heals.

Take out the word speedy then we can have a discussion.

Fritsch's aerial work and foot skills make him a good option.

Stretch at times has looked to be a decent option.

Hunt has no idea how to play on the wing.

Not a fan of JKH in the team, his body frame is just so small and is so easy to spoil in aerial contests. He did some solid work late in the season.

Garlett is Garlett and time we move on. Is capable of some good games but I don't think we can trust him again.

I was hoping Hannan would be when he was drafted, but doesn't find enough of the ball.

Kade Kolodjashnij is more than capable of playing on the wing and would be the best option along with Fristch from that list if he can get his confidence back. He was awful this year.

Harmes is a decent option on the wing at times.

I agree with Billy Stretch, was really happy that he came into the team and played well and looked like a full time AFL player really for the first time this year. Hopefully he's foots right and he'll own one wing for years to come.

Another name I'd put on the board would be Joel Smith, I feel like he's not really a key position defender, nor a 3rd forward type, but he does posses very good athletic attributes, so could be turned into a wingman more in the Richo/Riewolt mold than a traditional Gaff/I.Smith. I could see that Smith and Hunt could rotate between wing and defence and be a very hard match up.

OSCAR BAKER.....you  know he plays for our club. Hammy problems out for 6 plus weeks. He is a genuine speedster and  a serious player. A good pre season and will be a lock in somewhere in the side.  MID to a winger.

The other two that we have used this year are Salem and Brayshaw. Both are not slow and both can deliver the ball inside 50. Obviously Salem is the best kick, but I think both of them will be used more on the wing next year. Also remember that James Harmes has played wing for us and he is quick and quite a nice kick. If he is tagging on a wing (Sidebottom, Gaff, etc) then he'd also be there. I agree we do need more depth in this area though and personally I think Billy and Fritsch are the other two I'd run on the wing.

Yeah this kid is a chance I reckon.

Absolutely, watched the kid play on two occasions. The talent is there, without questions and there were signs that the application had lifted.

Stretch, Hunt, Fritsch, Baker, Hannan - intensified training for speed and outside skills - that's what we need, now. That is a talent list that other teams would surely envy...and all capable of such development.

How about Frost. Tall, strong, can mark, kicks long to position (ask TMac) and runs away from just about anyone. Use him as a target on the way out and as a weapon on the way in.

For those who remember, Richo starred on the wing and, going further back, the toiges used Bourke and Clay, who both played key defence, as wingmen in their heyday.

What a mismatch. Who would want to tag him? Who could keep up in space?

Easy to train and coach. Just tell him to run as hard as he can at the ball and then with the ball.

Interesting comments.

If he could develop more awareness could be a big thing

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
