Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Yes I believe they haven't used a first round pick in the draft for 3 years. This year will be the first time they have used a first rounder since 2014? They would have applied to use last years first rounder for a trade completed in 2016. Possibly Touhy?

Posted earlier in this thread:

I think the AFL gave Geelong permission last year.  They just want to protect against basket cases and desperate regimes selling their future down the river.  But if the club looks in good shape I think they'll allow it.

Here's a possible link I found but it's behind the paywall

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/geelong-can-again-trade-its-firstround-draft-pick-in-2018/news-story/82989f88db7d2425be27dae06077fab7

We can't trade next years first round pick due to trading first round picks from previous years. Unless we trade out a player (Hogan) we don't have currency to bring in high end talent such as May, Shiel, etc. We would have to apply to the AFL to use next years first round pick. Even if the AFL allowed it and we proposed to offer it up for May, it may not be enough to convince GC to trade May. They are likely to want something now for him rather than wait for next year unless they can on trade it for a player which I think is unlikely.

That is NOT correct apparently.  See @Lucifer's Hero post from earlier in this thread:

Quote

Rule:  Clubs must make at least two first-round selections in each four-year period. If they don't, they will face restrictions from trading any further first-round draft picks.

Geelong may need to play catch up  http://www.geelongcats.com.au/news/2018-07-19/cats-first-round-requirements

With no first round picks in 2016, 2017, 2018 (might change) used, technically we need to trade in a first round pick this year or an extra one next year otherwise we won't have the required two picks (unless we get exemption) but like Geelong it eventually catches up with you.

I can't find any reference to an mfc request to trade our 2019 pick.  I would suggest if we had it would be public knowledge by now as the trade starts in a few days.

As an aside, something that is untested with the AFL is the number of 1st round picks taken over a period ie would we get an allowance for traded in an extra pick in 2015?

Edit:  Just re-read the AFL article in the above link and found this line:  "... the rest of the competition has already met its quota and is free to place 2018 and 2019 first-round picks on the table."  So we don't need permission.

Josh Mahoney has arrived for start of #AFLTrades. Says preference is to keep Aaron vandenBerg, despite an interest to move to Sydney. Will have conversation with STK this morning on Dean Kent. Waiting on answers from Jesse Hogan and Steven May

We spent the weekend trying to convince the uncontracted vandenBerg to stay.

We haven't been trying to talk the contracted Hogan into staying.

The difference is palpable.

We want May and are happy to say goodbye to Hogan.

I if Hogan goes as a RFA in a few years and we are on par with this year, then we get about pick 16-20 as compo, but an additional years service.  If we trade him out this year, we can do better than that (1 or more top 10 picks?).  I suggest we were into May as a free agent option, but GCS see the benefit in the trade 1 year early.  GCS could get better compo if they see themselves being a basket case again next year.

it means clubs have to demand the contracts are longer term from this point, or decide if 12 months service is worth the drop in value at the trade table.  Players have to make this call, then the clubs can act in their best interests.

over to you, Jesse.  Either way, sign or go, next move is yours.  The sooner the better, BTW.

Oh, I see. I would've thought Hogan would be the much more valuable player?  But I guess I don't know enough about Lobb.

No. It couldn’t. Because Jesse is contracted and much more talented than lobb. Freo have leaked that to try and panic us into accepting less rather than miss out on May.

Hogan needs to make up his [censored] mind opposed to beating around the bush every year. It’s trade period, the longer he wants to think about it the less time we have to trade. I hope we put a 5 year contract in front of him and tell him to sign it or his out. This is now at a point where his indecisiveness is going to start costing the club.

Hogan is more valuable, as he’s obviously a more talented player. I think he means Lobb has actually committed to them so he is now their primary concern, as opposed to a player who can’t make up his mind and is constantly stuffing everyone around. The fact he’s touring their facilities etc shows he’s got one foot out the door already and isn’t properly committed to us anymore.

Chill.

Rome wasn't built in a day. The Gaff decision may also put the wind up Freo, (do they offer more) Hogan may choose to stay, either way I imagine the club has asked Hogan for his response by a certain time or we will move on believing he will stay and not entertain a trade this year. The May deal is separate and I think we can still land him (with AFL permission)

Is it entirely plausible that Hogan has told the club, but the club are brokering a deal prior to Hogan going public? If he comes out and say I want to go home to Fremantle, it weakens our hand somewhat

My read in the situation is that there won't be a decision from Jesse until there is a deal done (in the background). There is no way we'd want a situation where he decides to go and a deal can't be done, or we get screwed down after his preference becomes public and there's no going back.

So what's happening then:

 - Jesse happy to go

 - Freo waiting for some reason, good situation is just until Neale deal finalised and confirm the picks they'll give us. Bad situation is they've taken a step back due to posturing, or worse preference for Lobb, or catastrophically Jesse's foot

 - Melbourne powerless to do anything until Freo sorts out it's shyte

We'll be waiting for a few days yet I reckon...

Its possible. Would put some pressure on us to get the deal done if he did make an announcement I guess and then in the event that it doesn't get done we get a nice media circus.

    DEPTH CHARGE by Whispering Jack

The jubilation on the coach’s face as he danced a celebratory jig by the playing bench after the final siren sounded to record his team’s four-point victory over the Demons when the teams last met, said it all.    On that rainy Friday night at the Adelaide Oval, Ken Hinkley’s young midfield secured much more than four points on offer. The victory over one of the big dogs of the competition after a succession of wins over some of its lesser lights gave his team respect and validation fo

    HIBERNATING by KC from Casey

They opened up the rooms to let Casey out to play on Sunday but the team was still hibernating and they missed the bulk of the opening quarter. A FORK IN THE HAWK by George on the Outer

For too long in the past, Demon fans became habitually sick and tired of watching the Hawks hand out thrashings to their side. But Melbourne’s empahtic 55-point win at the MCG on Saturday has truly put a fork in the Hawk and turned that history well and truly on its head. The Demons have now won nine of their last ten encounters with the other result, a draw.     And like a fork, it was the multi-pronged options that Melbourne had all across the ground.  It certainly helped that Hawthorn
