Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Farewell Jesse Hogan

True, but players often sign those types of deals.  Both McDonald's only signed two year extensions back in 2016 and, while they have both committed again this season (Tom for 4, Oscar for another 2), I don't think him signing for just a few years was that big of a deal back then.  I can understand why it would look that way in hindsight though.

For me it’s not a hindsight thing. Yes players sometimes do sign two year extensions (usually because that’s all a club is willing to commit to) but the difference there between the Vic boy Tommy Mac is the fact that Hogan was an interstater with intense speculation forever swirling about the possibility of him heading home. There was a real opportunity at his last contract signing to conclusively win over the hearts and minds of Demons fans with a Norm Smith-like “I’m Melbourne, Tony. I’m Melbourne.” But the lad chose not to do it. As I said, one foot in and one foot out. A bob each way on the nags.

That was his right as a pro footballer. No issue with that. But he lost me a bit as a fan that day and I suspect I’m not on my Pat Malone.

Did anyone else notice that when Nathan Jones was questioned during the Grand Final coverage about Jesse's intentions that at no stage did he categorically say:

'I really want Jesse to stay at Melbourne'.

Probably nothing in it as they seemed to drop the question on him cold, at least that's what he claimed, but he kind of danced around the question with statements like doing what's right for Jesse and supporting him in the right way, etc.

Yeah- he knows he’s gone.

Jones demonstrates that he’s diplomatic, articulate, a leader and a decent human being in the way he spoke about Hogan.

You wonder about motivations, if all of this is true.

Playing finals?  Stay at Melbourne

Play with your team mates? Stay at Melbourne

Repay the faith, development and care offered during the last few horrible years?  Stay at Melbourne.

Go home (and spend half your time travelling interstate ) go to Freo

Play under a coach that has never used key forwards well? Go to Freo

Big Bucks?  Probably either.

i would be interested to know how well he gets on with his MFC team mates.

in the end, my primary concern is that MFC uses any player movement to enhance its position.  If it’s on, then let’s get a good deal and create a nucleus of players that want to be here, and want to win together.

I think there may be more to it than how well he gets on with his team mates. A couple of weeks ago all we heard is how happy he is here in melbourne and it has become another home to him. Now it seems to have completly changed. Does he have a girlfriend from Perth ? Does he do stuff that some of his team mates disapprove of ? There may be something going on we don't know about.

Maybe he would like to knock on cousins door than win a flag. Hope not.

Maybe I read too far into it, or maybe it’s just his natural demeanour, but in hindsight his nonchalant media statements just after his injury late in the year said it all to me.

Wouldnt you be [censored] shattered? We were on the verge of playing finals for the first time in 12 years for chrissakes.

Players, whether they be from Victoria, WA, SA or the moon, are well within their rights to sign shorter term deals in the current climate.  While we were beginning to improve as a club in 16-17, many players were well within their right to sign a shorter deal to see where the club was headed.  You would wager that's what Tom McDonald did after all the rubbish he had been through before he signed on in 2016.

How are we to know if Jesse would sign on again if he hadn't had the troubles (injuries, illness, passing of his father) he has had since signing his last deal?  We don't.  We don't know what is going through his head right now or the reasons behind him potentially leaving (something he hasn't even confirmed yet).

He never lost me as a fan the day he signed on as I was pleased by his show of faith and hopeful that our ability to improve further would ensure he would stick around.  I believe that would still be the case had he not gone through the things he has.  Hell, it may still end up being the case.  We don't know for sure just yet.

So in one breath you say “we don’t know what is going through his head right now or the reasons behind him leaving”, then in the next you declare that you believe that he’d be sticking around had he not gone through the things he had.

You’ve been one of the more fickle and inconsistent posters in this thread, Wiseblood. Lambasting others for merely discussing the possibility of trading Hogan, then backpedaling and re-hashing your view to suit the new narrative.

Seems like someone’s ego is a bit dented. Just man up brother - you were wrong.

Here I was, thinking we were having a good conversation about Jesse, and this is what you come up with.  Have a good look at yourself, pal.

Bumping my Q: If we need Hogans salary off the books because an elite mid nominates us, then we dont have all the leverage with Freo as we dont want to hold hogan for a year, correct? We want the trade done quickly so long as it satisfies in providing the picks we can use on other trades. I wouldnt expect the club to pursue overs, only what it needs which may include unders to get it done, only so we can make sure the S.May + elite mid deals happen at a minimum.

Thoughts?

Easy there bro... seems to me Wise has just been doing the same as most of us ... just watching the smoke get thicker and thicker and waiting to see if there is a fire... speaking of smoke bro take a toke on this and relaaax..

Hogan going frees up cap without doubt.

We don't need him gone as I'm sure the club would gladly be chuffed were he to stay.

I suspect this is no overnight occurrence and as such there are plans/options to use that money on others.

The club will happily pursue what's required to have all its plans fulfilled. There's no real prize for having spare change at the end of the Circus.

Just to be clear here - we were talking about Jesse signing his two year deal in 2016 and how we felt about that.  I didn't get personal, just gave my opinion, and I thought it was a good discussion point.  I see no reason why you needed to attack me when I hadn't done the same to you.  Any reason for that?  Just feels like I've missed something.

Cheers.

Though I think I understand what's behind the notion of interstaters signing shorter paper there really is no justification for such. It's professional footy...sign here..play. that's all.

You tried to shut others down earlier in the thread for even having the temerity to discuss this topic. Stood up there with your red and blue goggles fastened, duffel coat and beanie on, ready to pot anyone who didn’t have what you felt was your version of a “pro Dees” stance. Go re-read the rest of the thread if your memory’s lapsed. Then you’ll see what your ‘missing’.

Honestly mate, a bit of humility it isn’t that hard.

That's great, but what did it have to do with our discussion?  That's all I'm interested in.  I could care less what you think of me.  Just want to know why you went the low blow for no reason.

Yeah, confident in the club to acquire what it needs or can get done, they have the big picture in mind. I just think DL'ers expecting a a first round picks and elite recruits like Gaff & May might be a little disappointed. Priority might be having the cap space and picks to get both recruits, rather than acquiring what people think is fair for Hogan.

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
