Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Dom Tyson - what's wrong?

After reading the ins and outs thread a majority of people thought Dom Tyson should be on the chopping block.

The word coming out of the club is they really rate Joel Smith and he is pushing for selection. I imagine Dom Tyson would be in danger with that selection as a specialist midfielder who will never be in front of Viney, Oliver, Brayshaw or even Harmes for midfield time but is not really a back flanker.

I watched the replay paying particular attention to Dom after the negative comments on Demonland and I struggle to see what he did wrong. Infact, he created two goals with his kicking into the forward line.

Am I missing something and Dom had a shocker? Please tell me where he went wrong. Is it Demonland groupthink? Or is he just the last player picked of a very, very good bunch?

He's been pushed out of his inside role on to a wing and he's just not a damaging wingmen or runner.  He's playing a role, but in my opinion he's about player no.22 in the side in that role.  He's better as an inside mid where he can pick up 25 disposals, but he's behind others now in there.

My gut feel is that it's not Joel Smith who'd take his spot, more-so Kennedy-Harris.

I actually think Kennedy-Harris can probably do that link up role slightly better than Tyson.  Just an opinion.

4 possessions to half time is a good start. He was also run off and pushed aside a few times.

I agree here, however I think Goody would rather back in Tyson over JKH at the risk of ruining the team chemistry just a gut feel.

I have been a bit a JKH basher however I thought he started to play that link role really well in the GWS game.

Hawthorn looked to expose him and had Henderson pushing forward on him on multiple occasions. There was an instance in the first quarter where he was easily turned around inside 50, it was just poor defensive play. This may have been the time Gunston missed the simple pass.

Dom is a decent player, but as a wingman he is a poor player.

Tyson seems to be the lowest in the pecking order for midfielders, so if Fritsch is moved to the wing to allow Joel Smith to be added to the team, Tyson's place is under threat. But I don't think Tyson is the only one who's position is at risk. Fritsch could also replace Hannan who hasn't really done enough to guarantee his spot, either. (I'm not suggesting Hannan should be dropped, only that if another tall defender is selected,  I think Hannan is at equal risk as Tyson of being omitted.)

Tyson is a average mid, played in his preferred position, injury free and consistent games hes an above average inside mid. He's not a bull like viney oliver and brayshaw, he's an extractor who scans for the best option and hits it most of the time. This can cause him to get caught some times or dispose under pressure. If he were playing inside he wouldnt be in our bottom 5, but others have pushed him to the wing where despite not being suited and never playing that role he still manages to be serviceable.  Unfortunately for Dom, if we have smith in it pushes fritsch from defence back up to the wing. Fritsch's value to the team has been greatest on the wing. So smith defensively upgrade on fritsch. Fritsch up grade on tyson. Fritsch could go forward in hannan or spargos spot but its not as much gained across the field.

I too suspect there'll be no change, but if there was I think it will be the one I mooted.

I don't think hell get dropped, but his future position is not clear.

I quite like Tyson, I do agree he's a fair way back in the pecking order. If he's going to continue on the outside it's important that his decision making and disposal by foot is spot on. Often he waits for a 2nd or 3rd option only to be pinged, or he long bombs i50 because his disposal to a lead is poor. He's certainly not quick, but would like to see him in 2019 with a bigger tank for repeat running late in games.

He's also a reasonable mark for his size.

We need to get Fritsch back on to a wing as he plays that role better than Tyson and he struggles at times in the backline.

I feel like we also need another lock-down defender.

Unless I am mistaken, Fritsch's breakout year at Casey last year was as a goal scoring, floating half forward/forward pocket.

I understand his use since Lever went out, but eventually, hope he returns to the forward line, where his value can be maximised.

When or if he gets his form back, I think Hunt will be a better winger than Tyson and that Billy already is. Baker could be another to challenge for that spot.

I thought Tyson played well against the cats and ok against the hawks.  he is an experienced, mature body and adds value to the team especially in a big final.  a lot more value than Smith or JKH would add imo

I like this analysis, and is echoed by a few others, and is the only real justification for Tyson out that I can see.

It does however rely upon the premise that Smith is a strong back OR half-back option and I'm not convinced. I agree he's got potential and has shown a bit in some games, but also had some poor ones (St Kilda loss springs to mind). Ultimately Joel has only played 7 senior games this season and been missing for the last 5 games

I think Tyson has been serviceable across his 16 games, better in the last few than season average given the importance of the games. This and his experience is going hold his spot for mine.

I rate Dom, seems like I'm in the minority. Thought his footy was really solid up until his arm injury.

He stays in for me and good sides will have depth, challenging players to hold their spot.. i have no dramas with that.

Tyson is a better footballer and more influential than our bottom six. Its just he isnt in the top few for his position which means he's playing a different role. Now he's spot in the 22 is under threat because other players might be more skilled for that role. If he drops out this week and we lose he might ask for a trade, if we win through and he isn't in the gf 22, it would be pretty hard to take being a player of doms quality.

Dom Tyson is a very solid player. I also dont understand the hate. Perhaps because he has a bit of that laconic swagger and never seems to spint 100 percent with ball in hand.

No changes for me. If Fritch has been trusted to play in the backline until now i dont know why we would bring im Smith for the prelim

Fritsch started with us as a forward where he was good, he went to a wing where he was great and now he's filling a need down back where he has been adequate.

Tyson - prolific but wasteful

He's not "prolific" or particularly damaging in his wing role, which is the issue.

As an inside mid he's quite serviceable.  He's been pushed out by Brayshaw.

he has shocking awareness, no peripheral vision, and often passes up the first and/or best option because he understates the urgency and pressure being applied around him. Watch the game again. I counted three Hawthorn goals that came as a result of a posession chain he was involved in, where he gave off a hospital handpass or kick, leading to a turnover/tackle/stoppage. Nathan Jones does it as well but can at least have an influence.

I’d make the Smith for Tyson change.  I worry about the WCE forward line leg speed against our backs.

Jetta, Salem, OMac, Lewis aren’t fast.

Smith is quick and can play tall.  I like the idea of Fritsch on the wing, I think he is dangerous drifting up forward.

Unfortunately that means Dom misses out.

If I were Dom Tyson, I would be desperate to get a trade at the end of this year. He will never be anything other than a medium-to-good inside midfielder and we have heaps of that type already — almost all of whom are well in front of him.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
