Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Was the win against West Coast rigged?

I haven't watched the replay but I remember an instance in the first quarter 15 meters out from our goal at a boundary throw in and it appeared Tom McDonald was blocked by a 3rd man, but no call from the umpire. No replay from the broadcasters so unsure if there was anything in it. Anyone who has watched the replay that can comment or let me know at what time it occurred?

Gawn was blocked on the goal line by Rioli in the decision that went to the review. Rioli just charged at Gawn to stop him from jumping at the ball.

The free against Spargo for holding Barass could just as easily been paid to Spargo for Barass holding Spargo away from the ball.

Oliver was held at every centre bounce. There are plenty......

I'm not adverse to booing bad umpiring decisions usually for stuff that isn't paid but the Eagles fans take booing to a whole new level. Being a booer myself I can recognise when an opposition has his head taken off or is clearly pushed in the back. Eagles fans apparently don't have the same idea of fairness. If they aren't awarded a free or an opposition gets a free no matter the correctness of the decision that is a cause for booing.

I told you pre-game they were bad. By far the worst supporters in the league IMO. They boo the siren, their own players, umpires....have never heard anything like it before.

This table was first posted in May and I said at the time ...

"I ran those totals into a statistics web page and the standard deviation is about 340.

Only North and Sydney are more than one standard deviation away from the mean. With these numbers, 8.4% and 6.6% likely. In other words, "a bit off" but not outrageous. So you might look at them.

But then Wet Toast are nearly 3 SD away. In this case 0.36% likely. A definite outlier. Even a non footy fan can tell something is up."

haha.... no really, wtf?

This thread is not serious is it?

We won against the odds in hostile territory, with a negative free kick count ( colour me shocked ) and the game was"rigged" in our favour?

Dont operate any heavy machinery till the gear leaves your system Joeboy.

Ha! I posted the table on the west coast eagles thread on BigFooty saying "I'll just leave this here..."

and they deleted it!

What were the WCE BF people saying about the umpiring in the game? Asking for a friend.

Occam’s razor says our game is hard to umpire, our umpires are non-pro and of low quality

They still have a far better idea of what constitutes a free kick, and are better trained to recognise it, than any biased supporter (us included). I often watch a replay and see that most decisions that I might disagree with when I'm "live" at the game, are in fact technically correct.

The hardest-to-understand rule is the idea of "prior opportunity". We (and the WCE fans) might want umpires to call holding-the-ball at the first sign of a tackle, but that's not how it works, or what the rule says.

I honestly thought there was some joke I was missing when I first read the OP. After reading it through several times... nope, he seems to be serious.

I’ve watched the replay 3 times and still can’t comprehend how we were awarded frees, or at least not penalized for many blatant errors, despite the howls of abuse throughout the game from an overwhelmingly anti Melbourne crowd.

The non payment of a free kick against O.Mac ,when he took on the tackler by dropping his head into an oncoming chest, was just one of  many mind boggling decisions surprisingly in our favour.

In my conspiracy theory, the AFL contrived a feel good story ending

This  is arrant nonsense. The are plenty of conspiracies in the AFL . None of them involve the Deeees being favoured by umpires to enable us to win a football match. Your conspiracy theory has no legs.

Some choice quotes from WCE BigFooty forum:

THOSE USELESS ****IN GREEN MAGGOTS
They couldn't suck Melbourne's dick any harder, they climaxed on the Umps face so hard.
[censored] THOSE NON HTBs , [censored] MELBOURNE, [censored] VICTORIA, Damn THIS TEAM, [censored] BT, [censored] THOSE GREEN MAGGOTS AGAIN

- ******* lol at that umpiring. Outstanding effort to get Melbourne over the line, brown paper bag stuff.

Maggots with the reverse affirmation which is no accident.

Negatives: Umpires cheating,  congrats AFL you got what you wanted.

Was only listening on the radio but it sounds like we were shafted pretty hard by the umpiring in that first quarter. The commentators couldn't believe some of the non calls.

Negatives:
- VFL umpiring. If that continues for Melbourne then it’s obvious that they’re the next Western Bulldogs who won GF with umps turning a blind eye to throwing. Today we saw continuous throwing, incorrect disposal, HTB, high tackles, Holding the man, scragging and stray elbows continuously not paid against the Dee’s. Pathetic.

Mulldog Anyone at all surprised that Oscar McDonald was cleared for his tackle on Darling? One arm pinned, hint of a downwards drive in the tackle and a player out of the game with concussion.

CN9000:The umpiring was certainly perplexing today, to say the least. The AFL recently had a inquiry into the supposed "advantage" we receive, and I think today was symptomatic of their attempt to fix a non existent problem - the amount of non calls alone is testament to that fact. I'm guessing they instructed the Victorian based umps they brought in (also part of the "solution") to hold back on calling blantent frees, to lesson the amount of free kicks in the game and let it "flow" more.

Are you serious? Did the AFL actually have an enquiry into this??

The problem was Hocking (No 16) who deserved all of the criticism directed at the umps.  It looked as crooked as you can get.

Agree with all, but note that Spargo actually got Barrass around the neck and you can see his hand over Barrass's shoulder. It was a correct decision, but yes, as usual there were several others.

I thought we got a much better run than usual over there.

The umpiring has been called into question on this site this year in a far greater way than any previous year.  That is my observation.

Coincides with the sport being even harder to impire,  the fact thst we as a team are totally relevant again but most importantly,  the close losses that we have incurred.

In previous years when we were getting smashed not many cared and when we win easily no one arks up either.  The  close losses - different story.  Not news to me though.

I've seen worse on this forum.  Some posters have managed to convince themselves that the whole competition is rigged, orchestrated by Gil at HQ and with all the umpires and coaches in on it.

And you're saying it's not rigged and the coaches and umpires are not in on it ??

Amazing claim

There is a feelgood push 'jb',  by the AFL.    But not just for us, but AFL wide.  especially Via Ch-7 commentary.

I would hope the umpires are instructed to 'feel for the underdog', within their minds. Rather than the other way about, which can also happen Re 'home crowd decisions'.

Guy sitting next to me was listening to the radio and was relaying to me that the commentary also couldn't believe how one side the umpiring was towards Melbourne the entire game.

I'm assuming he was listening to the Perth equivalent of 5AA.

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
