Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Interesting story, and seeing as the year was 1974 the coach referred in less than glowing terms was R. Skilton.

If that is the case then this also says plenty. Surely this can't be the case??

Couldn’t agree more, but it is still a sad sight to see a Leigh Matthews statue outside the MCG

And I Believe that prior to it’s erection Don Cordner -(who I think was MCC President at the time) opposed it, apparently saying something along the lines of not wanting a criminals statue outside the ground.

Steve Smith’s mum chased Matthews around a supermarket soon after that incident with her son, giving him a bit of what for.

As i said a few months ago, i had a chance meeting with Matthews about 20 years ago.

I didn’t say a lot, but he knew exactly what i meant...

A low life of the highest order

I would have paid a months wages to see him chased around a Supermarket, by an irate mother.

But just because blokes like Matthews and Brereton were thugs doesn't mean their opinions aren't relevant or they don't have great knowledge of the game. In fact, they probably have a better understanding of football violence and it's motives than most.

Good thing is we can ignore Derm based solely on the tripe he talks now.

I look at Derm a bit differently. He's like an alien species that you just know you could learn from if only you could decipher his cryptic language.

I agree with that, somewhere deep down he knows what he's talking about but can't just say it straight out and has to detour everything he says via Broome.

I read somewhere that Neville Bruns has tried on a number of occasions to speak with leathal and every time he’s not wanted a bar of him. Says alot IMO . Kind of puts the gaff and Bugg incidents in perspective , both very remorseful and sorry for their actions, and thinking of the victim and the impact of their actions

Lethal on the other hand was probably just sorry he got caught . On 100 years of Australian footy video (about 20 years ago) he talks about the incident and his first thought was “why did I do that... and oh no ... they’ll be coming” .

No wonder he used the phrase “if it bleeds it can be killed” in 2001. But that’s ok the AFL put a statue of him outside the mcg so we should get his opinions on a red card system

The lethal hit on bruns may have been personal  surrounding possible issues about a 3rd party who was playing for geelong or living there at the time.

Might be more complex than a simple hit behind play. One wonders why lethal refuses to speak to bruns which may be a clue.

But who would know apart from both parties.

No it's not.  The greatest player in history deserves a statue.

It was a very different era with different standards.  I hate it when people try and judge different eras on today's standards.

I know you'll say that you're not doing that and that you thought the same way back then.  Great.  We all have different opinions.  I reckon it's great that he has a statue and he thoroughly deserves it.

I worked with Neil McMullen - he was a respected paediatric surgeon.

i had no idea about this story and it is interesting he is no longer practicing medicine but has become a player manager.

I am not denying the guy could play.

But he was also a vicious thug, who won’t face up to it now when questioned.

He's admitted the Bruns incident was way out of line.

He doesn't now need to comment on what happened decades ago every time a snowflake wants him to grovel.

That’s your opinion.

Stephen Smith Still gets headaches to this day, i am not sure about Peter Giles or McMullin.

I saw the Stephen Smith hit at the ground. It was pure thuggery, planned and executed

Firstly, what do you expect him to say and how often ?

Secondly, it's drawing a stupid bow to pinpoint every headache Smith gets on a decades old Matthews incident.  Smith played 200 games and got plenty of head knocks in those 200 games.

It's fair to say that I don't buy it.  You're welcome to...

You enjoy that statue ProDee.

His headaches are a direct result of the Matthews hit.

His words to Mike Shehan a couple of years ago

You didn't answer my question, "What do you expect him to say and how often" ?

And no, I don't accept that every headache he gets is from the Matthews incident from decades ago.  He played 200 games of footy.

It's silly and doesn't make sense.  I doubt he told Sheahan that and even if he did it doesn't make me believe it's true.

And even if it was true, it doesn't make the hit any worse.  It is what it is.

I expect him to face up to what HE did, whether it was yesterday or 45 years ago.

You doubt he told Mike Sheahan that during his “Open Mike” episode, wtf does that mean when i have watched the episode more than once

You are wrong. Sheahan asked him about the direct incident and Smith gave a very detailed account.

He has faced up to it.  How often do you want him to ?

I'll take your word for it that he told Sheahan what you say, unless it was said in a joking fashion, but it changes nothing for me.

He wouldn't accurately be able to align every frigging headache with an incident from decades ago.

And even if he could, so what ?  The incident is what it is.

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
