Melbourne as usual.

I've grown up expecting and having this kind of journey. So I can enjoy this emotion. Feeling numb, a bit dizzy, frustrated and some pain. It's only football and I "got my money's worth". It was a good game though painful entertainment. Better then many past years. A loss is not going to destroy me. I can see us only getting better and hungrier. Another one that hurts the players. One day we will stand up.

I thought the Geelong supporters were feral. Their hate was mainly to us, but we have self loathing in abundance.
Their booing during the game was just pathetic. Why boo Max? As the commentator said when Max was taken out off the ball, "the crowd arn't happy" as though the penalty should not be paid for that indiscretion because the ferals don't like it. Or, the loud speaker coming on during play so as to gee the crowd up.

Don't become them.

I like that Melbourne supporters are fair, applaud good play no matter which side and are generally amiable even with a heart felt loss like this one. For those expressing hate I hope you recover quickly from your pain. Winning is not everything. Again I like the ride. Maybe because I have no choice as a Dees supporter. I need to enjoy it.

Congratulations to Geelong though they didn't deserve it. Robbed but they got it done and we let it slip.

Oh please, it would have made no difference to his match. He was nowhere to be seen when the pressure was on. Had Hogan stood up, it would have allowed us to clear more numbers out and load up the backline. Just as Geelong with Hawkins. But sadly he isn’t a big game player. Not yet anyway.

We certainly don't deserve to play finals on the back of the first 18 rounds of 2018 anyway. We haven't beaten a top 8 side and have lost to a bottom 2 side too.

I don't want to talk about leadership tonight. I don't think that's necessarily why we lost this game. There are two major reasons why we lost. 1) our inefficinecy inside 50 and poor kicking at goal. 2) our game style that leads to us leaking goals.

I'd love to know what Geelong's conversion per inside 50 was. It felt like (with the exception of a small period in the third quarter), every time they went inside, they scored. Their straight kicking invariably meant it was a goal against.

I said last week that we'd miss finals if we lost tonight and what a gut wrenching way of meaning we'll miss.

We lack such quality and consistency across half forward too. With the exception of Melksham, who IMO is arguably our most important player for the way he connects the midfield with the forwardline, we also lack speed and polish. JKH and ANB (the latter was pretty good tonight) just don't have the speed or polish for a top 8 team.

And despite winning some crucial one v ones, I'm still waiting for Petracca to impact a game like Brayshaw or Degoey have. He just doesn't exhibit that matchbreaker quality that I hoped. He still has time, but it's frustrating that he is still yet to impact a game in the way those two aforementioned players have.

Another thing, why was Gawn off the ground for such a crucial period in the last quarter? It beggars belief. How many goals did they kick when he was off? A rest is fine but he seemed to be off more than he was on in the last.

I'll have to watch the replay if I can bare it, but despite getting a PB, I felt Clarry played a bit of a Tom Mitchell game. Lots of contested footy and touches, but didn't get it on the outside enough to use his kicking to set up play more. His first quarter was sublime though. Maybe I need to watch it again?

Anyway, does anyone else feel they've seen enough of the game style now and feel it ultimately doesn't work? Or do people think it's merely a matter of tidying up the way we enter forward 50? Surely, we would have done this now if it were that simple...

 

the game style doesn't work. MIdfield elements do work but not all. As for the Offence and Defence - forget it!

We lost it when we put the cue in the rack after going 29 points up. We snapped out of it after their 5 goal run but it was too late. Same old mental demons kicking in thinking we had the game won.

Goodwin makes the move at halftime of Harmes to Danger and the game turns big time in our favour but he can't coach apparently.

FMD Hawkins got absolute silver service for 3 goals for those goals in the last. Goody moves Frost and we reset and do what we need.

14.14 is not the coaches fault

Some strange umpires decisions especially Ablett getting a free at the top of the centre square for holding when he actually dropped the ball

Gawny with the blood rule, shocking luck

Tracs bomb bad mistake but in fairness he held the ball as long as he could 

JKH panicking when he had more time

So easy to think with a clear head as opposed to ranting like a lunatic 

And I didn't mind Goodys presser pretty honest assessment

I don't know if we're allowed to complain about injuries, we had a pretty good year.

However, it's probably little to no coincidence that through our 6-game winning streak we largely had a full list to choose from.

Since Lever went down we're 2-4 and look demonstrably worse defensively, with OMac regressing from his early-season form.

Since Viney went down we've lost consecutive CP and clearance statistics despite being the best side in both.

Without Stretch we've given two games to JKH who adds nothing offensively (essentially the complete opposite of Stretch).

Geelong had 20 scoring shots from 50 inside 50s, being a 40% scoring rate.

That's actually a lot lower than some of our other games this year.

We were robbed by silly rules and a spud that would have kicked that goal if he was in the VFL. Never play JKH again.

Oscar is at the crossroads no idea on Hawkins who always kills us. Time to bring in Keilty.

What is wrong with Hogan? Can't take a mark unless it's against a midget. In nearly every game we have lost he has been poor.

Wrong wrong and wrong. 14 14  Vs 16 4 just admit we are cursed ( don't tell the players though). I so wont to meet the [censored] in a prelim at the G and give them the spanking they deserve. Have some faith  this will turn and I think the players believe/ know it will happen if they keep to the plan.I'm as gutted as anyone by this loss but keep some perspective.
