Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Ah...the crux.

It's not that anyone particularly suggested dropping him atm....as I see it. It's more that he's seen by many as not being subjected to the same litmus.

This is where it gets murky.

You would have thought we lost the game on the weekend and Jones was the main reason... I agree with @SPC this is an odd thread.

Unless he starts stringing together really poor games I don't think this is really a discussion. He had a really consistent first half of the year and since has played more of defensive role in the midfield blocking the oppositions midfielders while Brayshaw, Oliver, Trac and Viney win the ball. His disposal has never been elite by any lengths and neither is his speed but he's still best 22.

The discussions about how MFC moves forward with Jones should be left until next year and post finals campaign/run to see how he can compete.

Some over the top comments here, I don't think Jones is the big defensive liability some think. When Roos first came he sharpened his defensive work but that was because he Roos bought in other players to help win the ball.

Even at the start of the year without Viney it was clear Jones was our most dangerous midfielder with the ball.

Now he's back on the wing and he's not ideally suited but he spent most of the 2nd half on Ed Richards who is a very talented young player and Jones restricted his influence.

It's not worth talking about Jones' career end date until he's settled in a lesser role, one which he could do for 1 year or 5 years, we don't know yet. I'm not even sure if it should be half back or half forward but I've got not doubt he's got a role in one of those positions coming up maybe from next year (we need to bring in some wingmen to make that happen).

I agree. I think he'd be a better bet for a HBF than Lewis or Vince.  With an occasional run on HFF. He can snag a pretty good goal.

I admire Nate, but the fact that he won 3 B+F shows how bad MFC was. Look at the 2013 top 5 !!  Eeeek

Winner: Keith ‘Bluey’ Truscott Memorial Trophy – Nathan Jones (365 votes)

Second: Sid Anderson Memorial Trophy – Colin Garland (360)

Third: Ron Barassi Snr Memorial Trophy – Dean Terlich (306)

Fourth: Ivor Warne-Smith Memorial Trophy – Matt Jones (303)

Fifth: Dick Taylor Memorial Trophy – Colin Sylvia (288)

I think he suffered from being in such poor sides. He often tried to do to much. Still does on occasion.

Hopefully he can still be a useful member of the team for 2018 and 2019. And possibly 2020 if he can slot into a suitable different role.

Our co-captain Nathan Jones looked out of sorts last night, errors galore, lacking in leadership. A shadow of his former self.

Poor decisions, hesitation and not going the first option. Just 2 i50s, 2 clearances and a paltry 2 tackles. Just 19 possessions.

The whips are cracking in the run home, teams and individuals - particularly leaders - are standing up across the comp.

Jones is certainly not passed it, he may have a niggle I’m unaware of, but when you cross the line and play lots of minutes - as a captain - fans and the team rely on leadership, good decision making.

He lowered his colours last night and we’ll need him to turn up in the last 6 weeks without J.Viney - to make a serious play in September ... otherwise they’ll along with the fans will be booking holidays for September.

I think your comment about Jones is relatively justified, HT.  He had an off game, and probably hasn't been at his best over the last month.  He hasn't been bad, nor do I think he is lacking in leadership, but I think we have pretty high expectations for Jonesy and how consistent he has been for so long, and when he is down it's pretty noticeable.

However, I don't think him having one shocker is reason enough to pot him in his own thread, and I'd wager that's why some are rightfully not happy with it.  Couldn't this have been part of the post match discussion?  I think singling him out in his own thread after one poor game is a bit harsh.  I think the discussion is fair, but the singling out isn't.

That's your vote.. that's ok

Others think it's warranted...as we're discussing Jones...not the Dogs game..that has its own parameters surely.

Just as we might discuss any player in isolation...so do we Jonesy here.

I don't see a problem in that.

In his original post, HT is discussing Nathan Jones' game against the Dogs.  That's why I said it probably should have gone in the Post Match Thread.  If he has another 3 shockers in a row then have at it, but I think it's a little bit of knee jerk reaction to be honest.

Yes the subject is  Jones...the context of the op  used that game as a point of reference but any reasonable discussion will go beyond that for balance.

The topic is Jones

It's not hard to see. Everyone else has. Cheers

I get it, Einstein.  I get the topic is Jones and I even agreed with HT that we should be able to have a discussion like this about any player on our list, regardless of their standing.  Posters here have potted everyone from Hogan to Lewis to Petracca to Tyson to O Mac and so on this season for a variety of reasons.  Sometimes it's worthwhile (Tyson and Petracca), other times it's a knee jerk reaction (Lewis and Hogan).  Jones falls into the knee jerk reaction part.  I just don't think it's worth it's own thread... yet.

You disagree which is fantastic.  Go and buy a trophy and stick it on your mantle to celebrate.  That's the last I'll say on it with you.

Hmmmm, so let's see....

He's a terrible kick, B grader, not best 22, should either retire or be pushed, is having a quiet patch, yet still avg 24 and 4 tackles and is a poor leader.

FMD, it's a wonder that with all the talent, depth and leadership in the club he's still the captain and one of the most popular on the list.

Why wait. Sack him now.

September is getting closer.

Will Jones be able to help the MFC win a final(s)?

i have always thought that Jones as a footballer has been overrated, his courage and commitment is a different matter. But September will be red hot.

I want club success. Not all players are going to make it, Jonesy maybe one of them.

You are among the most hypocritical condescending on this forum.

You don't like tomatoes...you redescribe them and call them potatoes. Someone wants to discuss a player...but not in your manner of approval then we're all potting them.

Quite frankly what you consider worthy or otherwise is not the measure of what everyone else might.

You don't want to discuss Jones...in his own right. Fine.

But please cease with your almighty idea anyone really cares or that YOU are the arbiter of this or anything here.

We are a group. And at the moment the group is discussing Jones...in any number of views.

You're welcome to contribute or not. Not because I or anyone says or thinks so...but because it's a group discussion.

Feel free to leave it

Correct. The game against the Dogs.

The main point here is we need him to be at his best or close to in the coming weeks. I don’t question his effort, his overall leadership.

I encourage him to improve his efficiency, execution and decision making. Making statements early in games, setting the bar along with the current troops led by Maxy and Oliver - that’s what can prove the difference in winning a few more games as opposed to limping into finals or falling short.

I want him to stand up in these areas, I know he can. That’s why he’s been such a good player over time.

The club has worked its way into this position, the opportunity presents for him, for his teammates.

He has got some big challenges coming. At 31, he’s not over the hill and IMO still capable of his best.

Now is the time.

This topic deserves its own, instead getting backwashed among hyperbole which is the game day thread.

Nathan Jones has plenty of heart and when the tough get going there are not many like him around  that can lead from the front. However apart from Viney and Oliver and Gawny there aren't enough personnel with the discipline to lead from the front at our club at the minute. T H E R E F O R E ..........................

Look up the word Discipline and some of you knockers will learn something.            It equals Nathan Jones.

His game was ok not terrible, but the team plays taller around him. He mentors oliver and brayshaw having him in there for another season or two is critical. Come september he is the base these kids will build on.

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
