We have the midfield options to possibly absorb the Viney loss.

We didn't and still don't have the defensive options to cover the Lever loss, as evidenced by conceding cricket scores against St Kilda and Collingwood.

This was never Viney's  decision to make - but he thinks it is -  and therein lies the issue.

Jacks stubborness (and stupidity) has made it harder for us to make the finals.

Hopefully we make it and he can sit in the stands and watch and maybe finally learn his lesson.   So disappointing.

Yes i agree. The same injury has pain for at least 2 weeks and he keeps playing. 

Not the sharpest tool in the box is Jack Viney....

This injury has to be managed DAILY....

On a side note, I'd prefer Gawn as captain - only one to consistently stand up when the club needs him, make Lever his VC with it in a new change of leadership direction.

Yes, Jack needs to learn that we are not a one man team and missing finals games might just do it. 

And that is quite likely: 

• Gus and Oliver are doing a superb job in the midfield.
• We have Tyson who like Viney can get the ball and has a dominant left side (might also be their weakness). 
• And Vand who might get a call up in a few weeks to add a bit more muscle around the ball.   

So with everyone doing a bit extra (like on Saturday) we can cover his absence as our midfield success is based on the communication and the 'connection' between Max and whoever he is going to tap the ball to.  If Viney is there he gets tapped the ball in his direction.  If he isn't there it gets tapped to someone else.

I actually wonder if not having Viney helps.  It gives Gus and Oliver more say in what happens at center bounces and I reckon they have better footy smarts than young Jack.

As a side note, from the WB game i felt the team balance was the best it has been all year. 2 KPD (frost and McDonald), 2 KPF (Hogan and McDonald) and one less contested ball player (Viney) and 1 extra runner (Hannan). I would like to stay with this for the rest of the year, if hannan or any other outside like player is to be dropped then bring in another runner.

aka play the best players in our team in the best position, don't toss and turn the team around every 2 minutes to be flexible. Gawn, Oliver, Brayshaw and ____ at the majority of center bounces please :).

I think he was having problems vs Port - after the game the camera panned to the rooms and Jack appeared in real discomfort taking his boot off and there was a trainer already there with an ice pack for him.  That could be the normal process for him after every game but at the time I wondered if he was having problems again.

One would think that if he noticed it was worse leading into the Freo/Darwin game we would have rested him for the game or at least the last quarter/half and not trained last week - just to be cautions.  Sensible injury risk management to my mind...

Tom reported minor pain in his toe, missed one week, and back playing like nothing ever happened.

Why the F would Viney not do the same. I know he is young and he wants to play and lead the team, but jesus have you learnt nothing?

somebody... grab your garden spade and head down to Gosch's Paddock when no training... and push into the soil and lever back, opening the ground. to see & check the depth of moisture in the soil !!!

Do this in a number of different places over the field, to check for an average of soil moisture penetration.

 

If the moisture penetration is only shallow, then we need to water the field repeatedly.  To soften the ground.

Stress fractures creep up on you.

I got one over an old nastily broken Tibia injury site,,, when training again 15 years after the injury.

Once it's sore, its already injured and it's an issue.   Until its sore, you naturally think all is fine.

Viney is having numerous stress fractures since mid last year as have others so I would look to the weather and dry grounds as we have been quite dry in the time-frame.

Recent rainfall does not mean the grounds have softened sufficiently.   The ground may be water resistant by now.

Actually, on the basis of what's been reported, we have zero evidence that running out a foot injury is risky - because we're ignoring all the occasions when running it out works. We're only hearing about when it (perhaps) doesn't.

As Tom Mac said re his own foot/toe issues, as a footballer, you're constantly having problems with feet and toes: you get stood on, you get knocks, you're doing a lot of running, and it's not called *foot* ball for nothing. Once again, we're only hearing about when these develop into something more serious, while ignoring the majority of times when they don't.

Every player on our list would be nursing/carrying some kind of niggle, including foot/toes.
