Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Yes, that’s what many people say but the pattern of our game was so different in the second half that I thought it was something to consider given that we have six games to go and the majority of those are against other finals contenders.

If our coaches can get us to improve on where we’ve been so far this year by just a small percentage it might be the difference between making top four or not making the finals again.

I'm going to go left field and suggest that Goodwin evolved a little today. He did something very counter-Simon today; he actually changed the game ..mid game.  A lot of his style has been men at the ball...this fills a stat sheet but often congests players ( ours ) and provides an imbalance favouring the opposition. They get clear skies to spread...we chase.

He (SG) addressed our ineffectiveness by reversing the situation. He's learnt something ( possibly ) ...it's not he who necessarily wins the ball succeeds... it's he who controls it. 2nd half we had ball on a string. Again stats are rubbish lmho as there's no dynamic context.

Footy....it's really not that complicated.

Well that was an unusual game and one that might puzzle those analysts who figure they’ve got our game worked out.

Statistically, we had less disposals, less contested possessions, less clearances, less tackles and less inside 50s. These are areas where, during this season, we are usually in front of our opposition and yet today, we won by 50 points.

Anyone have an explanation?

I guess, even though it didn’t look like it much of the time, the usage must have been far better.  Still, IMO,  too many long bombs forward but it worked better today

I doubt one win proves your point.  There are many factors why we lose games, including the ones after Darwin and including the fact that we are often crap.  But it's drawing a long bow to effectively say that Darwin has negligible effect.  I bet the coaches would prefer we didn't have to play there.

Maybe we are learning to manage Darwin a bit better, though maybe the opposition today let us off.

I was dreading a second half fade out which didn’t happen.

Well done Dees.

Thought Lewis was pretty good tonight but Vince and his turnovers is a real worry.

Interestingly, I thought the opposite.  Lewis cost us with at least one appalling turnover.

Next week will be the acid test.

If we give a good account of ourselves (not even necessarily win), then I reckon we are on our way to September. We stink the joint up and we are a 40/60 proposition at best.

The Doggies, like Freo, are playing a skeleton team right now. No Bont or Libba are really testing them. However, you can only play the opposition in front of you, and I was impressed after half time.

Have to set ourselves for a win against the odds next week to make up for the Saints loss and put the Cats out of contention, effectively for our spot.  Also means we could potentially lose against the Crows & Swans and still make the eight.

JKH has more than twice as many kicks as Jetta (and seven more tackles)! I can’t believe the fact that he is run down so often by some on Demonland (who don’t seem to be watching the match)! I expect that he will play next week.

We don’t need to “make the eight” (as we are already in it)! We need to win every match and finish in the top 4!

Have we got a nickname for Spargo yet?

Brilliant third quarter, strong tackles, nice running goal.

There was some very good understanding between him and Garlett throughout the game around our forward 50.

Glad we broke the 'when will we win at the 'G' stat.

I will admit I was nervous at half time, listening to Dwayne Russel doesn't help, but then seeing our run, I will attempt to explain the stats this way, what I saw today was a team more concerned about helping each other than trying to do it for them selves. Watching the style of play each effort really seemed to focus on helping the person receiving the ball to put them in a better position to do something. In the past we have played 'hot potato' and none of our players want to be the one that has the turnover. I thought this 'helping your mate' style of play made the most of our touches and why we scorched them in the 3rd. (That and Max in every bullies face plugging holes, laying bumps etc, the dogs must have felt like they were running up hill against Max.)

I now think with our mindset we can beat Geelong, more confidant of the next game than I was about this one. Fritsch is an amazing player, looks like he is in his 5th year not 1st. @beelzebub is right about the coach, he has definetly fixed some things about the way we play, big kudos to Goodwin for evolving. I also thought Lewis was the general QB tonight that he is meant to be, yes he had an interception, but the body of work tonight led the defense very well, and I am sure OMAC never reads social media, just keeps trying,

Very happy Roman dee tonight.

We were clinical in the second half.  And we didn't run out of legs which is something as bulldogs play a fast game.

The end to end play that Oliver had three possessions in the chain that ended in a Petracca goal was the play of the day.

It was good to see that we stopped competing with ourselves on the ground and in the air especially i50.

Our forward lead patterns and movement were the best I've seen us play.  For the record, Jesse had no trouble at all kicking a goal from outside 50!

And, we scored 8 goals from 10 inside 50's in the 3rd.  One for the record books!

I got a real chuckle from Gus' 'accidental' OOTF (not paid by Razor) when they had a laugh and a high five!

Can you post the out on the full you speak of? Until then, I will seriously question your eyesight and your understanding of the game in its entirety. Will be happy to apologize if you can prove me wrong, but I don't think I will need to.

How you can get this so wrong questions why I bother reading what you write.

They're rubbish. Only one matters

Those that think there's worth in the how and when are sadly mistaken. You'll wake up to this one day perhaps...perhaps not.

The game is about the eccentricity of a non round ball...not numbers ( other than the scoreboard )

Keep pushing your mantra though.

Excellent games by Gawn, Oliver, Brayshaw and Hogan.

Opposition were rubbish. I need to see us beat a good team.

People like you bore the crap out of me.

You're team has just won by 50 points. Whinge when we lose, not when we win.

Just freaking enjoy yourself. Who the hell comes on the forum 10 minutes after a solid win and complains that the oppo were rubbish?

My favourite part of the game was Oliver lurking in the goal square during the 3rd quarter. It was nice to see someone there behind the tall forwards.

Gawn and Angus keep killing it and I'm starting to wonder if Fritsch will become a superstar of the game?

I took “OOTF” to be a freudian slip and LH meant “deliberate out of bounds” - obviously an OOTF is black and white and it wasn’t one of those as it bounced inside the line.

As for whether it was deliberate or not - I think it would have been pretty stiff to have been paid. I’ve never seen anyone do a kick that unco and mean it. I thought it was a pretty clear skill error.

He got better as the game went on, which is fair enough given his time away. I'd keep him for sure. Who are you going to drop him for?

Not sure about the tone of that post...

Ok, so I used the wrong acronym.  Should be DOB not OOBF.  No reason to get narky about it.  I'm sure you knew what I was referring to - there was only one smiling high 5 between Gus and Razor.  Were you not watching.

To me the game was won on the outside.  The first half they won the uncontested ball by a big margin indicating they were able to find space for low pressure possessions, setting up ball movement. We won it in the second half as we were able to find space.

Imo this was about positioning at stoppages. We won the centre clearances all day when the was less congestion and we could get the ball outside.  They won the stoppage clearances convincingly by putting extra numbers in, getting in our way, pressuring our first reciever and stopping us getting the ball out.

I agree with much of that although, in the first quarter in particular, the Doggies won clearances at the center bounces and at stoppages.  From about half way through the 2nd quarter we were able to curb their dominance and get on top in the center and ended up winning the clearances here.

The main area where we got back into the match though IMO was upping the contested work.  Doggies killed us in the first quarter and a half in this area (as well as the outside...but it started here) but we started turning it around much like the clearances (through middle) and eventually ended up matching them here.  Meaning we were able to compete at the contest more effectively and prevent the Doggies from getting as much of it on the outside as they were getting early on.

Also....

We controlled the tempo much more than we did of late instead of playing on almost every time we had it at break neck speed only to turn it over by kicking (under pressure) to an out numbered player and seeing a quick turnover and the ball come back over our heads for an easy score.  This happened a few times in first half, better handled in the 2nd.

We out marked them in all facets, uncontested,  contested (Demons 16 v Doggies 11) and forward fifty (12 v 9).  In total 102 v 70.     32 extra marks is a massive differential (that's 8 every quarter!).

We were also able to hold our structure better than the doggies and better than we did in previous weeks (maybe similar against Freo) by ensuring we almost always had a key forward, a few genuine talls down back, and Maxy killing it through the middle and pretty much everywhere else.

We also tended to play an attacking disposal game forward of play off HB and through the middle,  much more so than the doggies, who went lateral and kicked backwards quite a bit more.... Meters gained > Demons 6,220 vs Doggies 5,581.  That means the doggies were giving up (in comparison to us)  3.7 times the length of the G over the entire match or almost the length of the G every quarter.

The doggies also turned the ball over 9 times more and we had 10 more intercepts.

The other huge differential was score involvements.  Demons 133 vs Doggies 73.  60 more!  Would suggest we linked up much more effectively, more often for the eventual scoreboard result.  Good signs against a pretty ordinary opp but we need to remain positive.

Because we started playing more direct footy. It's frustrating watching us play around the boundary and kick down the line to contest when we have the talent on the park to go direct and play down the guts.

A 50 point win is always a good day but our structure still frustrates me. Our forwards start too far up the ground, we don't open the field up by switching play and instead kick into the wall from the flanks all the time which makes us easy to defend. The 2nd half was much better but they need to take the game on more, we're good enough to and make opposition pay.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
