Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

We don’t have much HF/wing depth

Really? I reckon we have more depth there than anywhere else - assuming Spargo and Jeff are playing, guys outside the 22 would include Hannan, Stretch, vandenberg, Kent, Bugg and Baker...how much more depth do you need?!?

I meant currently/recently

Hannan (been injured), Stretch (injured), vandenberg (missed 2 years), Kent (been injured), Bugg (seems he wil be delidted) and Baker (untried)

He has had a few weeks now to settle in and adjust to the pace of the game, and he is still miles short of what is expected. His first year was pretty good, but I can't see how he has improved over the last four years. A few nice things each week doesn't cut it when they are accompanied by a number of miskicks, decision making errors and his lack of pace and size. And we have plenty of others who can play a similar role with more upside - I'd rather Hannan was tried on the wing - at least he can run and take an overhead mark.

He’s sitting in that category of could be out at any moment so every week could potentially be his last game for Melbourne but I actually think he’s improving in his confidence. His ball use has mostly been good (although he set Jones up with that up and under that gave Jones his shiner), and he’s getting better at his evasive movements.

That said I think he’ll get found out when exposed to immense pressure from the likes of Richmond.

Running hard, applying pressure, playing a role... but jury is still out on this one.

I think this sums it up, Mach.  Has he done enough to earn another contract?  I reckon it's touch and go at the minute.  I think he has done enough to catch the attention of someone like the Suns, though, where he might get a consistent crack at it in 2019.  I wouldn't be averse to giving him another year, but I wouldn't be surprised if he misses out either.

Spargo - love him, but he's first season and so will be up and down
Jeff - going ok at the moment but still soft and was rightfully dropped
Hannan - has good and bad games, isn't established at the level
Stretch - couldn't get in to the side, then injured
Vanders - just back from injury
Kent - whenever he gets some form going he gets injured
Bugg - think he's done at AFL level
Baker - yet to debut, some promise at Casey but that doesn't mean much until he breaks through

Just because we have a lot of options doesn't mean we have depth. Depth comes from having a stable best 22 and then having options who can come in and do a job after that. We don't even have one established wingman, so there's no way to say we have depth there! Fritsch is the closest we have and in an ideal world we can move him around forward/wing etc. Spargo/ANB/Melk etc somewhat lock down the half forward flanker jobs but the depth players aren't consistently tearing it up at Casey. And there's no depth behind Garlett for that designated crumber/goal sneak.

Stretch got into the team before JKH, didn't he? Ditto Spargo, Hannan, etc. I'd rate JKH behind almost all of the guys you listed, and Baker is young so I'd rather hang onto him than JKH if I needed to choose between delisting one of the two.

I didn't conflate the mid/wing positions so you may want to take that up with DubDee. However, there are plenty of options on our list for guys playing wing that I'd rate ahead of JKH. However, obviously we have had a number of injuries that mean those options are required elsewhere, and JKH is getting a run.

Ah right, understand you. Sure, you're right - and that's why he's getting a game. Amazed that anyone thinks he's ticking boxes right now, though.

The game versus the Suns was his best so far this season, but it's important to note that they are putrid right now. They're a poor footy side and on top of that, they have a ton of outs which meant they were playing one of the worst teams they could put out on the field. JKHstill has a bunch of flaws which I, like other posters, think will get shown up big time against decent teams. The root cause of his ills may in part be mental - a lack of confidence would explain many of them - but regardless, I'll be shocked if he makes it.

Really stiff to miss out on a final but it's the right call bringing Hannan in.

JFK has impressed at times over the last month and I reckon he's done enough to earn a contract extension. He's a solid depth player now.

At the very worst, he's improved his trade value significantly,  and I wouldn't be surprised if Carlton or GCS started sniffing around as he may get limited opportunity again next year.

May still be required next week if we win and cop any injuries .

The Dees have good depth in their team now.

Consider: When Essendon was a power Gary O’Donnell played 50 reserves games before he made his debut. And then he went on to captain them.

JFK has plenty of time. Melbourne is a good side and a hard side to break into.

What about Dipper? Something like 100 before becoming a regular.

Happy to see him get a new, 2 year contract

would be very disappointed if he gets more than a year.

His form is barely acceptable bar one game. Stretch is way in front of him and I would expect another mid fielder in the draft. The only thing going for him he that he now has the body strength to avoid being pushed off the ball.

One year more at most.

He's done enough to ensure he gets his chances next year, and that is probably more than any of us thought was possible 5 weeks ago.

Hopefully it drives him to have a massive pre-season and claim his spot in the side next year.

However Hannan is a proven performer and makes us more dangerous. I'm glad he is playing.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
