I was watching him do some kick to kick at the start and he just seemed sluggish..didnt seem to move well and was definitely looking proppy.

OMG - the red centre was weeks ago .... last week was the top end .... two very different places.   Red centre dry and much cooler ... top end hot and humid and very draining.

Just a question to anyone 

When training do the groups undertake the task with pressure being applied and are they asked to perform with intensity?

It seems as soon as the pressure of a game is applied they seem to lose accuracy especially and fumble.

Interesting observation on Vanders. Where does a player like him fit into the forward line structure? He's not a KPF or Crumber. Does he become a 3rd tall that can stretch defences? I can't recall if he was a good mark/shot for goal. We've got a bull in Petracca there already, would it make us too top heavy? Could he play on gorilla forwards as a second or third tall alongside Oscar with your Wagner comparison? Or is he a forward through and through? 

Edit: Oh just just saw @kevin martin comment: "Backs had Cam Pederson and Aaron vandenBerg. " comment. Interesting times ahead. How did they look as defenders?

 No. At best the players in yellow tops corral MFC play makers, the emphasis is on positive ball movement usually. I have sometimes queried if we should do some drills with increased intensity in a more confined space, at least in the preseason but don’t think I have witnessed such drills.

Concentrating on Positive ball movement is good but it needs to be a part of training to be instinctive and occur under pressure.

After learning the routine it should then be practised under the same me condition it is to be used under extreme pressure.

I've seen the numbers during simulations varied, usually to the advantage of the attacking team. If the ball is turned over then the numbers are against the defenders. In drills there are plenty of one on one with ground balls or in the air. They have drills with finding a way through defenders and obstacles. I have not seen 'run with players' in drills. Usually the player doing outside stuff is unmarked. I see the same problem as you depositve, we cannot handle close marking. Intensity changes all the time. Usually the training starts with low and slow then increases then back to less intensity. Can be dependent on the break and whether we have travelled.

Didn't focus much on VandenBerg but he is a big player for his mobility and desire. Loves getting the ball. Cam doing everything well. Though they appear to still be encouraging Harry Petty, wouldn't be surprised if they give him another go some time.

I think @kevin martin might have mixed Vanders with someone else because he definitely stayed in the forwards group the whole time down my end? 

I couldn't get over how big of a unit Vanders is! To the naked eye he looks like a genuine key forward.

But to answer your question @John Demonic i think he can definitely play as that roaming 3rd tall/midfielder who can stand next to Tmac deep forward as a marking option and apply forward pressure once the ball hits the ground.

With his sheer size and strength i would also love for him to have spurts on ball to give Oliver /Petracca rest up forward. We all forget that we drafted him as an inside midfielder that was averaging over 30 disposals a game in the NEAFL, so there's definitely some midfield ability there in him.

Usually only attend the open trainings. If I am just walking past when they train I'll have a look. Next open one I'll keep an eye out. I am mid 50's, 172 cm tall, Caucasian, no MFC paraphernalia and will be walking laps of the oval. Hope to say gidday and talk about MFC.

For all of their well-heralded flaws here on DL, I just find it exciting to think about both Vanders and Pedo propping up our backline defences alongside Frosty.

All three are versatile, two are very mobile runners, all three can mark in packs and kick well, all three can rough up opponents, all three game styles can be supported with runners and crumbers who are less massive,

We still have OMac at full back to stay in position to defend. We still have Jetta and Hibberd in position - not having to watch them run all over the place to cover as sole performers against multiple opposition forwards - weakening our deep defence line.

So, for me, it's goodbye Lewis, Vince and a few newbies, hello experience and team defence, at last.

I seem to recall vanders weakness was his disposal? If vanders were to come in i feel it would be spargos spot. Goodwin loves anb's running so i can't see him being dropped before spargo. An option might be to push salem back permanently into lewis's position and Petracca and vanders swap between forward and midfield. I dont think that will happen this year though, for all of lewis's brain fades he is still a bigger positive to the team than not. If Vanders can return to form and stay fit, kent and hunt do the same we finally have pace to select.

Depending on how well Vanders goes over the next three weeks,  I thought he might compete with Tim Smith for a spot - however, Tim is 4cm taller and 5kgs heavier (according to MFC website). Perhaps Hannan and Vanders might be competing for a spot, depending on Vanders pace?
